Tested: We Supercharged Our Ford Mustang Dark Horse

The instruction manual is also very clear that the car can only take premium fuel. While that was the case before, it seems the consequences are much more dire. From the manual: "If fuel of less than 91 octane is present in the vehicle's fuel tank, the tank must be completely drained and refilled with 91 or higher octane to one-eighth of a tank. The fuel tank is returnless, therefore, initial fuel in the system will be low octane. Drain all fuel!" Quite the warning.
Hitting the test track
So was all of the time and money worth the effort? While we haven't had a chance to take it to another round of Edmunds U-Drags races quite yet, performance at our test track is promising. The newly supercharged Dark Horse hit 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, half a second quicker than before. It picked up even more speed down the straight, eclipsing the quarter-mile mark in 11.6 seconds at 125.6 mph. That's a full second quicker and more than 12 mph faster than before.
Getting a good launch in the Dark Horse took some patience and practice before, and the addition of an extra 310 hp hasn't helped the traction situation. While Dark Horses equipped with the six-speed manual come with launch control, our car is fitted with the 10-speed automatic and lacks any sort of launch control or race start feature. You simply have to roll onto the gas quickly but smoothly. Too much power and the rear tires will light up. Too little and the Dark Horse gets away too slowly.

Maury Ettleson, Chicago area auto dealer known for Celozzi-Ettleson Chevrolet and its iconic commercials, dies at 93

Chicago area auto dealer Maury Ettleson, known by generations of Chicagoans for his TV commercials alongside business partner Nick Celozzi for their Elmhurst, Illinois Chevrolet dealership "where you always save more money," died last week. Ettleson passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, at his home in north suburban Lincolnshire, his family wrote in a published obituary. He was 93 years old. Ettleson told the Chicago Tribune in 1992 that he grew up in the Wicker Park neighborhood, near the iconic intersection of Milwaukee, Damen, and North avenues. Ettleson co-founded Celozzi-Ettleson Chevrolet with Celozzi in 1968. The dealership thrived throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, and was known as "the biggest Chevrolet dealership in America." In their fondly remembered commercials, appearing side-by-side often in colorful suits or sweaters and ties in line with the fashions of the times, Celozzi and Ettleson would trade lines as they stood side-by-side or each showed off various vehicles in their inventory. "At Celozzi-Ettleson Chevrolet, in Elmhurst, at York and Roosevelt Roads," Ettleson would say at the conclusion of each commercial, before the pair each held up sheaves of cash and said in unison, "Where you always save more money!" Crain's Chicago Business reported at one point that Celozzi-Ettleson spent $1 million per year on television advertising, and to great success. At one point, Celozzi and Ettleson even parodied themselves in a Pizza Hut commercial, waving sheaves of pepperoni instead of cash as they touted Pizza Hut, in unison, "Where you always get great pepperoni!" The Pizza Hut commercial also featured the late Elmer Lynn Hauldren as the Empire Man of Empire Carpet ad fame. Celozzi and Ettleson sold their dealership in 2000, according to published reports. Ettleson's son, Mike Ettleson, followed his father into the auto dealership business. Ettleson's published obituary noted that he was a supporter of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, and an avid tennis player, baseball fan, and book and music lover. He was married for 68 years to his wife, Ruth, who died this past March 17. A memorial service for Ettleson is planned for Monday.

Car drives into pool at family campground in Massachusetts, narrowly missing swimmers

Police say a driver accidentally plowed through a fence and splashed down into a pool where people were swimming at a family campground in Monson, Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon. It happened at the Sunsetview Farm Camping Area on Town Farm Road at about 1 p.m. The Monson Police Department said the SUV narrowly missed some swimmers. Everyone inside the vehicle was able to get out safely, the fire department said. First responders evaluated six people at the scene, but no one was hurt. The fire department said off-duty firefighters from Wales, Palmer and Springfield helped people get out of the 33 x 50-foot pool and secured the area before Monson fire crews arrived. Photos posted by police show the damaged fence and the red Hyundai SUV mostly submerged in the inground swimming pool with its trunk and driver-side door open. Another picture from the fire department shows crews using a crane to lift the SUV out of the pool. Sunsetview has been operating as a camping area since 1970. "When you think of Massachusetts, we would like you to think of Sunsetview Farm Camping Area - a convenient overnight stop with a central location and easy access from Interstate highways that is also a true destination campground," the Sunsetview website says. "Our campground is known for our friendly and enthusiastic staff and for having lots of family friendly activities." Monson is a small town in Hampden County that's about 15 miles from Springfield in western Massachusetts.
