Trump doubles metal tariffs to 50% but skips UK. What it means for India
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Trump further agreed to reduce tariffs on UK imports of cars and steel, while the UK would lower its own tariffs on beef and ethanol. 'We're pleased that as a result of our agreement with the US, UK steel will not be subject to these additional tariffs,' said a UK spokesperson. In contrast, India, which exports approximately $5 billion worth of steel, aluminium, and related goods to the US annually, is expected to face repercussions. The Engineering Export Promotion Council of India has expressed concern over the tariff increase, cautioning that this could make Indian exports more expensive, potentially leading to a decrease in shipments.advertisement'This may not be the right time for such unilateral tariffs, especially when BTA talks are underway,' stated Pankaj Chadha, Chairman of EEPC India. He said that the proposed hike could jeopardise engineering exports, urging India to seek a similar waiver as the UK during ongoing bilateral trade agreement negotiations.Trump justified the tariff increase by asserting it would 'further secure the steel industry' in the US, suggesting that at 50%, foreign competitors would find it challenging to compete.Although India is not a major exporter to the US, Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy acknowledged some effects, and said, 'Minor impact will be there...A minor problem is there because we are not exporting in a big way.'Kumaraswamy highlighted that consignments already en route to the US, arriving post June 4, may incur the new 50% tariff, potentially causing disruption.Tune InMust Watch

6 from Birbhum nabbed by Delhi cops, pushed into B'desh: Pleas in HC
1 2 3 Kolkata: Six Birbhum residents, including three minors, who worked as ragpickers in Delhi, were labelled 'Bangladeshi' and nabbed by police on June 18 and pushed into Bangladesh by BSF on June 26, two habeas corpus petitions filed in Calcutta High Court alleged. HC was likely to take up the petitions on Friday, Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP and state migrant workers' welfare board chairperson Samirul Islam said. The pleas said two families of migrant workers were picked up by Delhi Police during an "identity verification drive" among the Bengali-speaking population. Among the detained, Sweety Bibi and her two minor sons as well as Danish Sheikh, his wife Sunali Khatun and their five-year-old son were sent to Bangladesh, Islam alleged. "Sunali's sister informed us of what had happened. On July 6, I took her father Bhodu Sk to Paikar police station and lodged a missing diary," he said. "Sunali is now four months pregnant. It is terrible that their five-year-old son is also going through these traumatic events, only because they speak Bengali," Pintu added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Sunali's sister, Roshni Bibi, who also works as a ragpicker in Delhi, said: "From June 18 to June 22, they were kept in Delhi's Katju Nagar police station. I met her there. My sister later called me from Bangladesh and said some people had given her shelter on seeing that she was pregnant." The petition said Sweety's husband, Azizul Dewan, went missing four years ago, so she supported the family, including her aged and ailing parents. The HC petitions stated that all six were Indian citizens and permanent residents of Paikar, and were unlawfully detained by Delhi Police in an extrajudicial manner. The petitions said they had valid Indian documents; proof of their parents' citizenship was also submitted in court. The petitions said the six were deprived of their liberty and had their human rights violated, because they were detained and pushed out of the country for speaking their mother tongue, undermining the pluralistic ethos of India.

Aircraft with high-speed internet to debut in Kol-Abu Dhabi sector
Kolkata: Flyers from Kolkata will be the first among 100 cities in over 40 countries on the Etihad Airways network to witness in-flight high-speed WiFi facility across all classes. "The international flying experience will change from Sept 26 when we service the Kolkata-Abu Dhabi sector with a new A321LR aircraft instead of the A320 now,"said Etihad chief revenue and commercial officer, Arik De. The brand new narrow-body Airbus A321LR will offer first-class suites, lie-flat business seats, and an economy cabin with 4K touchscreens and high-speed WiFi. "The WiFi facility will enable flyers to not only work online on their laptops but also view or stream their content from OTT accounts," said De, who will take delivery of the first of 40 A321LR aircraft in two weeks. All flyers can access the free chat feature on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and WeChat. Web-based calls and viewing content online is complementary for first-class passengers but fee-based for others. Though it does not have a service on Tuesday, sister airline Air Arabia operates on Tuesday. In the absence of direct flights to Europe or the US, Etihad, Emirates, and Qatar offer connections to the West via Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha. While aviation analysts argued that the lack of business class travellers and low yields have discouraged Indian, European, and American carriers from starting direct flights, Etihad is confident of filling up its premium seats. "There are many successful people from Kolkata settled in the US or Europe who want to ensure that their parents travel in comfort," Etihad VP (global sales & distribution) Javier Alija said, adding that around half of the business class passengers were leisure travellers.
