Baghdad, US Central Command review security cooperation
The meeting was attended by Steven Fagin, Charge d'Affaires at the US Embassy in Baghdad; Kevin Lambert, the new commander of the US-led global coalition against ISIS; and Kevin Leahy, commander of the Combined Joint Task Force—Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) in Iraq, according to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
The meeting addressed cooperation between Iraq and the international coalition, as well as preparations for the transition to bilateral security ties with the coalition's member countries.
In addition to security coordination, the two sides reviewed recent developments in Syria and their implications for regional security.
The Iraqi prime minister indicated that diplomatic initiatives and collaboration are important to maintain regional stability.
In an interview with the BBC earlier in July, Al-Sudani said that the international coalition's mission in Iraq will end in September 2026.
The Iraqi government held two rounds of discussions with the United States in Baghdad and Washington, and a third round is scheduled to be held to determine the structure of the security cooperation, in line with the Iraqi constitution, according to Al-Sudani.
In April, Al-Sudani and Leahy discussed strategies to strengthen collaboration between Iraq and the member countries of the international coalition.
This collaboration included improving training and exchanging knowledge and information with Iraqi security agencies.
Iraq initiated discussions with the United States in January 2024 to terminate the coalition's operations in the country.

US calls on Iraq to punish pro-Iran militants over deadly Baghdad attack
Also in Iraq Kurdish MP urges Iraqi president to halt Qaratapa upgrade Iraqi authorities arrest PMF members linked to attack on ministry Iraq to hit 52 degrees Celsius amid scorching summer Iraq sees drop in wheat production amid summer drought A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The United States on Monday called on the Iraqi government to bring the perpetrators of a deadly Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi) attack on an agriculture ministry branch in Baghdad the day prior to account 'without delay" and hold an Iran-backed faction responsible. An 'armed assault' by the PMF on an agriculture ministry office in Baghdad's Karkh district on Sunday left three people dead - a policeman, a civilian, and a member of the powerful Iran-backed Iraqi armed group Kataib Hezbollah. Baghdad confirmed that the perpetrators of the attack were PMF members. 'We call on the Government of Iraq to take measures to bring these perpetrators and their leaders to justice without delay,' the US Embassy in Baghdad said in a statement. It blamed the PMF-affiliated Kataib Hezbollah, a US-designated armed group, for the attack. 'We are saddened by the loss of life, which included federal police and an innocent civilian, and wish a swift recovery to the wounded,' the embassy stated. Washington holds Kataib Hezbollah, a key player in the Iran-led 'Axis of Resistance,' responsible for numerous attacks on US assets in the region since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani vowed on Sunday to hold the perpetrators accountable and ordered a probe into the attack. 'No one has the right to replace the state or its authorities, and no party is above the law,' Sudani said in an emergency security meeting following the attack. Iraq's Shiite-led Coordination Framework also condemned the attack as a 'violation of the law and state procedures.'

President Barzani: Not a single Yazidi should remain forgotten
Shafaq News – Erbil Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani called on the Iraqi government to fulfill its responsibilities toward the Yazidi community, particularly after the 2014 genocide committed by the Islamic State (ISIS). In a speech delivered on the president's behalf by his advisor Dilshad Shahab, during a ceremony commemorating the eleventh anniversary of the Yazidi genocide in Erbil on Monday, Barzani stressed the importance of justice, recognition, and sustained support for Yazidi survivors. According to the statement, the Kurdistan Region will continue its efforts, including at the international level, to ensure broader recognition of the genocide and to support Yazidis in reclaiming their rights. It affirmed the Region's commitment to backing all initiatives aimed at protecting Yazidis and assisting in their recovery. The presidency's remarks underscored that the fate of Yazidis still missing since 2014 must not be neglected. 'The Office for the Rescue of Kidnapped Yazidis, originally established by the presidency, must persist in its mission until the status of every abductee is known.' The Kurdish president also called for the implementation of the Yazidi Survivors Law, adopted by the Iraqi parliament to recognize and compensate victims of ISIS crimes. 'Eleven years after the genocide, large numbers of Yazidis remain displaced, many still living in camps under difficult conditions. Their original areas, including Sinjar and nearby districts, remain largely destroyed, with little access to basic services or a sense of security.' According to the presidency, this ongoing situation not only hinders the return of Yazidis to their homes but reflects 'a broader failure by the federal government to establish stability in Sinjar.' The area, it said, remains under the control of various armed factions, despite the 2020 Sinjar Agreement between Baghdad and Erbil. The presidency reiterated that Sinjar must not remain a contested zone for militias and that full implementation of the agreement — including the establishment of a local administration and public services — is necessary to provide Yazidis with the confidence to return. It also stressed the role of the international community in supporting reconstruction efforts, delivering justice, and recognizing the genocide. 'The Kurdistan Region continues to lobby for broader international acknowledgment.' Concluding the message, President Barzani reiterated his readiness to offer full support to Yazidis, affirming, 'Not a single abductee should remain forgotten. Whatever is necessary for their rescue or to uncover their fate, we will continue to pursue it.'

Iraq's Federal Court throws out lawsuits on Kurdistan salaries
Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq's Federal Supreme Court on Monday dismissed two lawsuits concerning the disbursement of salaries in the Kurdistan Region, citing a lack of jurisdiction in both cases. The first suit (No. 107) targeted Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and Finance Minister Taif Sami, demanding a ruling to keep employee salaries in the Region insulated from political dispute and the current agreement between Baghdad and Erbil. A second lawsuit (No. 104), also against Minister Sami, sought to compel the federal government to release monthly payments to public servants, retirees, families of martyrs, and recipients of social support—regardless of disagreements over the Budget Law or other related issues.
