Former Ohio State linebacker Jack Sawyer harps on 2022 loss to Michigan
However, the former Ohio State football linebacker is still trying to process how the Buckeyes lost to rival Michigan in the regular season finale in 2025. The Wolverines pulled off a major upset with a 13-10 win on Nov. 30 in "The Game" to keep OSU out of the Big Ten Conference Championship game.

The Buckeyes, of course, bounced back and ended up winning the national championship, which was sealed by a game-clinching fumble return for a touchdown by Sawyer, who never beat Michigan during his OSU career.
"I think they beat us straight up last year, obviously, and the year before, but my sophomore year, we left the field and we were like, 'This feels weird,' " Sawyer said during a recent podcast appearance on Not Just Football with Cam Heyward. "We lost by double digits, and it felt like we had beat the (expletive) out of them all game. You know, we ran a screen pass that we had never put in – not the formation, not the look, anything.
"And you see them on the sideline, they're doing (the signals), and we change it, we audible to it or whatever, and when we run it, all the D-linemen as soon as the ball is snapped, the linebackers, everybody, they sniffed it out."
The game Sawyer is referencing is a 45-23 Michigan win in 2022, when both teams entered "The Game" with an undefeated record. However, the Wolverines outscored the Buckeyes 21-3 in the fourth quarter, which included touchdown runs of 85 and 75 yards, respectively, from Michigan back Donovan Edwards.
The 2022 game stands out as it was 11 months before news broke that the NCAA was investigating Michigan over alleged sign-stealing.

Conor Stalions responds to Jack Sawyer's comments
Conor Stalions, the former Michigan analyst who is alleged to have led the sign-stealing scandal, responded to Sawyer's comments on Tuesday, July 29. Stallions resigned from Michigan in November 2023.

The NCAA is still in the process of giving out the final ruling of the investigation into sign-stealing and advanced scouting. The NCAA sent a notice of allegations to Michigan in August 2024, which included several Level I violations, the most serious offenses in the NCAA rulebook.
Meanwhile, Sawyer earned second-team all-Big Ten honors for the Buckeyes in 2025 and then helped the program win a national title. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Steelers.

And one thing Manning won't have is a safety net of an elite receiving corps like they have at Ohio State. The 21-year-old Manning will be asked to win games on his own, which is a lot to ask of any player in the SEC, which is as good as any conference has ever been in the history of college football. The Longhorns are asking Manning to be one of the best players in college football, but what if he's great instead of elite? That would severely limit Texas' upside in 2025. There was no way that Ohio State and Texas weren't going to top the betting board going into Week 1. 6.9 million watched Chargers-Lions Hall of Fame game
Football is back. And while the numbers are yet to hit regular-season form, a large throng tuned in for a glorified scrimmage involving second- and third-stringers. Via Austin Karp of Sports Business Daily, the Chargers-Lions Hall of Fame game on NBC generated 6.9 million viewers on average for the broadcast. It's the biggest audience for the Hall of Fame game since the 2021 matchup between the Steelers and Cowboys, which averaged 7.31 million. Last year, Bears-Texans on ABC averaged 4.93 million. Of the total number, 691,000 watched on Peacock and NBC Digital. It's the biggest NBC preseason streaming audience ever. Several more preseason games will be nationally televised over the next three weeks. In four weeks and three days, the season gets started with Cowboys-Eagles in Philadelphia. On NBC and Peacock. The number will be much higher than 6.9 million for that one.

Two Buckeyes make The Athletic's \
Bruce Feldman, formerly of ESPN and currently writing for The Athletic, writes a fun piece each year called the "Freaks List." Basically, he finds the players for each college football season that he considers the most absurdly physically gifted. In short, the "freaks." It's always a fun read, and a great way to learn the names of players to keep an eye on during the upcoming season. And this year, Feldman's list of freaks has two Buckeyes at the top. The top spot on the list is occupied by Jeremiah Smith. We all know that Smith is going to be probably the best receiver in the country this year. But what makes him a "freak," exactly? This quote from Feldman sums it up: "Smith's 11-foot broad jump, 38-inch vertical jump and 23.5 mph on the GPS are jaw-dropping for a receiver his size." Add his 550-pound squat and his 20 reps of 225-pound bench press, and it's clear why Smith is atop the list. He's putting up numbers that you see from linebackers, and he's doing it with nearly world-class track speed. On top of Smith at No. 1, there's another Buckeye in the top ten. Linebacker Sonny Styles slots in at tenth on the Freak List. What stands out about Styles to Feldman? "At 6-4 1/2, 243 pounds, he broad jumped 11-0, vertical jumped 40 inches and squatted 675 pounds." He also mentions Styles' speed, quoting Styles that he topped out at 23.2 mph last year. Of course, what will always impress me most about Styles is his block on Jack Sawyer's legendary fumble return. Styles was behind Texas running back Quintrevion Wisner when Sawyer picked up the ball, and Styles flat-out outrun him to get in front them block Wisner all the way down the field. That's Freak-level speed. No other Buckeyes made his top 100, but this isn't a list of best players or or most valuable. It's a list of physical freaks. It's a very fun read in general, and it definitely has plenty to keep Buckeye fans excited for the upcoming season.
