Manipur: Normal life affected in Kuki-dominated Churachandpur after Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum enforces shutdown, roads blocked and...
Life came to a stop in Manipur's Churachandpur district on Friday after a tribal group called for an indefinite shutdown. The protest was held after an elderly Kuki woman was killed during a gunfight. Shops and markets stayed closed, and there were very few vehicles on the roads. Members of the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), including many women, were seen blocking roads with sticks in their hands, demanding justice for the woman.
The woman, named Hoikholhing Haokip, died in a crossfire between security forces and some unknown armed men on Thursday evening. The incident took place in the Langchingmanbi and Heichanglok areas, where the security forces had gone for a search operation.
The armed men fired at the security team, and a gun battle followed. Sadly, Haokip was caught in the firing and lost her life.
Due to the shutdown, government offices had low attendance, and schools and colleges were shut.
The ITLF blamed the central government for not doing enough to protect tribal people and their land. They demanded a proper and fair investigation into repeated violations of buffer zones areas meant to separate communities during this ongoing conflict.
At the same time, a 24-hour shutdown also began in Kangpokpi district from 1 PM on Friday. The protest was supported by the Committee on Tribal Unity and other local groups from Churachandpur.
Since May 2023, over 260 people have died, and thousands have become homeless due to ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.
On February 13, the central government imposed President's rule in Manipur after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh stepped down. The state assembly has been placed under suspended animation, even though its term was supposed to last until 2027.

Imphal: A delegation of civil society organisations of the Meitei community in Manipur will hold talks with the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi on June 30 over the current situation in the ethnic strife-torn state, officials said on Saturday. A team of All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) will hold a discussion with officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs in the national capital on Monday, they said. Addressing a press conference, COCOMI convenor Khuraijam Athouba said, "A delegation of AMUCO, COCOMI and FOCS will meet officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs on June 30. We will apprise them of the concerns and frustrations of the people." AMUCO senior member S Bhubon said the main priority is to ensure that the territorial boundary of Manipur is not affected. "We would highlight the short and long-term measures that need to be taken up to stop threats faced by farmers in the peripheral areas of the Imphal valley." Opening of highways to all is another serious issue, and the plight of internally displaced people and their resettlement will also be discussed, he added. Efforts underway to form popular govt in Manipur: Ex-CM N Biren Singh
Former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Saturday said efforts are underway for setting up a popular government in the state, which is now under the President's rule. Speaking at the sidelines of a programme at the BJP state headquarters here, Singh expressed hope that a new government will be formed in Manipur soon. "We are working to form a government at the earliest. We are a national party. I have faith that a government will be formed soon after looking into the ground situation. The BJP and its allies want a popular government as well. We are working for the formation of a popular government," he said. Singh said the BJP has not criticised anybody and is concentrating only on the present crisis. "We are approaching the central government and concerned persons to bring an amicable solution and peace in the state. In the meantime, we are also working to form a popular government with frequent gatherings of MLAs. Everybody wants the restoration of peace. Peace is compulsory. In the last seven or eight months, there have been no reports of fighting between communities," the former CM said.
