Tom Brady says Birmingham must keep spending as they aim to stay above Wrexham
Birmingham beat Wrexham to the League One title last season, but it is the Welsh club who have splashed the cash ahead of the new season with six summer signings and Wales striker Nathan Broadhead reportedly set to join the Red Dragons in a record club £7.5million transfer from Ipswich. 'We've got to (keep spending),' NFL quarterback great and Birmingham shareholder Brady told The Sports Agents podcast. 'We've got to keep up with one another. Wrexham have, I'd say, done an incredible job. I mean, you can't be anything but excited about what they've done for that club… I'm so impressed by Wrexham. 'What they do on the pitch, off the pitch, and again, they're in a great position to succeed as well.' Asked about the rivalry in a fixture that has been dubbed the 'Hollywood Derby', Brady said: 'We're going to talk a lot of smack in the meantime between all of us, because it's pretty fun theatre, and I think there's some little friendly side bets going on. 'But make no mistake, the people who are going to decide the fate of those games are the players wearing those jerseys.' Brady made 10 Super Bowl appearances and had seven victories – both individual records – in a storied 23-year NFL career between 2000 and 2022. The 47-year-old admits he would love to bring the Super Bowl to Birmingham once the club's new 62,000-seater stadium is built in Bordesley Green. He said: 'That would be pretty amazing. I don't make all those decisions. I'm not sure how much I can influence those decisions. 'But I think that my partner, Tom Wagner (Birmingham chairman), is an incredible man, incredible businessman. 'He has huge ambitions for the club, and I would never bet against anything that he tries to accomplish.' Former Celtic and Tottenham coach Chris Davies steered Birmingham to League One glory with a record 111 points from 46 games. The previous season Birmingham were relegated to the third tier for the first time in 29 years, with former England captain Wayne Rooney having been sacked in January after just 15 matches in charge. Brady said: 'I think that's a very natural part of a growth process, that you are going to face adversities along the way. 'When I look back at those years, I'm very proud of what we accomplished because of what we overcame. 'Whatever happened two years ago or a year ago makes really no impact on where we're at now. 'I think this club has a great manager. The expectations and standards have been set at a different level, and we're going into this Championship season with great excitement. 'We want to restore it (Birmingham) to the glory that it's been in the past. To move up and to be promoted to the Premier League is a very daunting task, but it can be achieved.' ::The Sports Agents is available to listen to now on Global Player, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Weatherwatch: it is time meteorologists agreed what is meant by a ‘heat dome'
Some forecasters attributed the recent warm weather to a 'heat dome'. This sounds like a technical term, but the expression is not used in scientific circles and some question whether it should be used at all. Loosely speaking, a heat dome occurs when a stationary mass of high-pressure air forms over a region. This has a doming effect, blocking more warm air from rising, which raises pressure and temperature further. A 2016 Guardian piece discussed how the term 'heat dome' was starting to be used by American forecasters describing extreme conditions. One science editor complained that the new term was employed 'with a kind of breathlessness that implies there is something unusual and catastrophic going on'. Others thought that it was helpful in describing the mechanism causing especially high temperatures. In 2019 the Met Office described 'heat dome' as 'not a meteorological term that is recognised professionally'. But the expression took off, particularly in media discussions of the June 2021 Pacific north-west heatwave. In 2022 the American Meteorological Society added 'heat dome' to its glossary of terms. Technically correct or not, 'heat dome' is here to stay. A recent paper by the American Meteorological Society argues that the best course for meteorologists would be to agree a rigorous definition and get the media to use it correctly.

Stockport County condemns association with anti-LGBTQ+ material
A League One football club has spoken out against what it said was the unauthorised use of its club crest alongside "anti-LGBTQ+ symbols".Stockport County issued the statement this week after it was made aware of the club's crest being used, without permission, on "political propaganda" and alongside "deeply concerning imagery that promotes hate and division". The club said it would take all necessary steps, including legal action, to prevent the misuse of its crest, particularly "in a political or hateful context" . "Our club crest is a registered trademark and a symbol of unity, community, and the collective passion for football at Edgeley Park," the club said. "It represents all our fans, staff, players, and the wider Stockport community, regardless of their individual political beliefs, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, religion, or any other characteristic." 'No place for hate' It is understood the statement relates to images of stickers that have circulated on social media, some of which also bear anti-asylum seeker slogans. The club said: "There is no place for hate, discrimination, or exclusion of any kind at Edgeley Park or within our community."We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and safe."Stockport was promoted to League One last season, but missed out on being further promoted to the Champions League after being beaten by Leyton Orient on penalties in the play-off semi-final. The Hatters are set to play their first match of the 2025/26 season against the Bolton Wanderers at Edgeley Park on Sunday.
