Techie Couple Among Devotees Killed In Andhra Temple Wall Collapse
A techie couple are among seven devotees killed in a wall collapse during an annual festival at Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Simhachalam here in the early hours of Wednesday.
The officials have confirmed seven deaths as the rescue operation was completed by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the police. Initial reports had put the casualty at eight.
The deceased include four men and three women. Three devotees, who were injured, have been admitted to King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam.
A techie couple from the Visakhapatnam district was among the victims of the tragic accident. Pilla Uma Maheswara Rao (30) and Pilla Sailaja (26) were employed with HCL and Infosys in Hyderabad, and were working from home.
The couple, who married three years ago, hailed from Chandrapalem village in Madhurawada of Visakhapatnam.
Sailaja's mother, Venkat Ratna (45), and aunt G. Mahalakshmi (65) were also killed in the wall collapse.
The other deceased were identified as Durgaswamy Naidu (33) and K. Manikantha (28), both residents of East Godavari district, and Yedla Venkat Rao (45) of Visakhapatnam.
The incident occurred around 3.15 a.m. when devotees were queued up to buy tickets for darshan during Chandanotsavam, an annual festival.
The devotees were waiting to buy Rs 300 tickets for 'Nijaroopa darshanam'. During the annual festival, the thick sandalwood covering on the idol will be removed. The rituals were to begin in the early hours of the day.
The NDRF personnel rushed to the spot and launched the rescue operation with the help of police and other personnel.
Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, Visakhapatnam district Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad, and Police Commissioner Shanka Brata Bagchi supervised the rescue operations.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, IT Minister Nara Lokesh and other ministers expressed shock over the incident.
The Chief Minister ordered a probe by a three-member committee. He also announced Rs 25 lakh ex gratia each for the families of the deceased and Rs 3 lakh each to the injured.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has floated plans to demolish and reconstruct seven dilapidated bridges — including three vehicular bridges and four footover bridges — in the western suburbs' Kandivali and Malad areas. The project is estimated to cost nearly Rs 33 crore, and is slated to be completed over two years. According to civic officials, all the bridges are situated in the R/South ward, which encompasses Kandivali, and the P/North ward, which includes Malad. Of the seven bridges earmarked for the project, two are RCC-structures, which include 21-meter-long vehicular bridge near Appa Pada area and another vehicular bridge along Surbhi Complex near Sainagar Kandivali East. Meanwhile, the foot over bridges (FOB) proposed for the redevelopment include the 30-metre FOB near Ramnagar Chawl in Kandivali East; the FOB near Narvane Transit Camp as well as the foot over bridges along Gavdevi Road and Hanuman Nagar's Mahalakshmi dairy farm. The bridges, officials said, are currently in dilapidated conditions with at least two pedestrian bridges already shut while the other bridges are partially closed. The project has been proposed based on a structural audit submitted by consultants, who had been appointed by the BMC's bridges department to survey the bridges in the western suburbs. According to officials, the department had roped in SCG consulting services, whose analysis found that seven bridges in the western suburbs needed to be demolished and reconstructed. Following this, the civic body appointed another agency in 2023, Structronics Consulting Engineers, to reassess the bridges. After the final submissions by the two consultants concluded that the seven bridges would need to be demolished, the BMC appointed a technical consultant – Femstruct Consulting Engineers – to prepare a roadmap comprising the conceptual drawings, design, budget as well as the tender drafts. As per the proposals, the entire project will be executed over a period of 24 months. The reconstruction of the seven bridges, including the rates of consultants, is pegged at Rs 32.64 crore. The project will be executed through the civic bridges department, for which budget allocation of Rs. 8238.73 crore has been made in the budget for the fiscal year 2025 – 2026.

Chennai: The death of Naveen Bollineni, Treasury Manager at Tirumala Milk, "appears to be a case of suicide," said Chennai Police Commissioner A Arun, even as the police have launched an investigation into the alleged unofficial enquiry conducted by a senior officer. Naveen, 40, was found dead in Chennai last week, days after facing internal allegations of misappropriating Rs 40 crore from the private dairy firm. In a purported suicide note emailed to his mother, sister, and colleagues, Naveen blamed certain company officials for mental distress-but made no mention of police harassment, the Commissioner clarified. The top cop confirmed that Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kolathur) Pandiarajan had made preliminary enquiries without formally registering a case or beginning an official investigation. "Deputy Commissioner Pandiarajan should not have enquired into this. We are investigating his actions," Commissioner Rathore said, adding that appropriate action would be taken if any wrongdoing is established. He also clarified that under standard procedure, any financial fraud involving more than Rs 1 crore must be investigated only by the Central Crime Branch (CCB). Despite the company's internal complaint to the police, no FIR had been registered at the time of Naveen's death, and officials say the firm had not furnished necessary financial documents. The BJP had earlier accused the DMK government of allowing unofficial police enquiries, with former State President K Annamalai slamming the administration for "losing control over the force." The DMK has denied these allegations. The case has now been registered as a suspicious death, and Joint Commissioner of Police has been directed to conduct an internal inquiry and submit a detailed report.
