Robert Lewandowski accuses manager of "betraying" him as he refuses to play

Robert Lewandowski has lost the captaincy with Poland after sitting out recent games but has been left fuming with the head coach for how he's handled the saga
Poland icon Robert Lewandowski claims he was "betrayed" when he lost the armband after claiming he will never play for his country whilst Michał Probierz is the head coach.
The Barcelona frontman, who is his country's record goalscorer, has been left fuming by the series of events that saw him stripped of the captaincy as he lamented the manner in which he found out. Lewandowski had copped heavy criticism in the Polish media after making himself unavailable for games against Moldova and Finland this month.

He cited "physical and mental tiredness" after a long season with his club as well as and a recent hamstring injury. Lewandowski was replaced by Piotr Zielinski as captain on Sunday, but claimed his situation had been agreed with Probierz.

The 36-year-old also questioned how certain information became public and insists he should never have been informed about the changes over the phone.
Lewandowski told SportoweFakty: "I got a surprise call from Probierz with the information that he had decided to take away the armband. I was not prepared for it at all, I was putting my children to bed. The conversation lasted a few minutes.
"I didn't even have time to tell my family what had happened, because a few moments later it appeared online. I've been wearing the armband for 11 years and playing for the national team for 17. It seemed to me that such matters should be handled differently.
"Everything was communicated over the phone. It really shouldn't be like this. The coach betrayed my trust. I've always given everything to the national team, it's always been the most important thing to me, but I'm very hurt by what happened."
The ex-Bayern Munich maintained he was not angered by Zielinski replacing him, handing his full backing to the Inter Milan star, but believes the coach didn't back him.
"It's not even about the decision regarding the armband, but the way it was communicated to me," he added. "I really don't care about the armband itself. I believe in Zieliński and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him. I have the impression that the coach caved in to the media pressure. He broke agreements we had and that's why I'm surprised by his attitude."

Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney recalls ‘unforgettable' 2024 Tour de France Femmes win

No-one who watched her take the biggest win of her career 12 months ago will forget the drama of the final day. Niewiadoma-Phinney started the stage to Alpe d'Huez with an advantage of one minute 15 seconds over pre-race favourite Demi Vollering, but the Dutchwoman attacked on the Col du Glandon, building a lead of over a minute on her way to the stage win. A post shared by Le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift (@letourfemmes) When the calculations were done, Niewiadoma-Phinney had won by just four seconds – the smallest margin of victory in the history of the women's or the men's Tour de France. 'It was euphoric and unforgettable,' the Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto rider told the PA news agency. 'I think it's proof of hard work and persistence and never giving up. 'I was lucky. I didn't have to go through all the nerves and second counting. I was just doing my best. I was just on the bike fighting for my life. 'It's fun listening to people's stories, what they went through watching the race and how it affected them and how they were able to resonate with the pain I was experiencing.' Victory in the biggest race on the calendar was a major breakthrough for the 30-year-old, who was third in both 2022 and 2023, in keeping with a career in which she has always been a major contender but rarely on the top step herself. 'For many years there were many occasions where I knew I was the strongest, I was making others suffer, but I was not able to finish it because in racing…there are so many variables and different factors,' she said. 'I feel like I always had confidence…because I knew I could make them suffer, but something else had to happen for me to cross the finish line first. I was never hard on myself because I knew the reality.' Niewiadoma-Phinney was crowned Polish champion in late June, but her 2025 season has been hampered since a heavy crash at Strade Bianche in March. It was not until the Tour de Suisse that she showed real form with third place overall. The last few weeks have been spent at altitude camp in Andorra, making the final preparations for her title defence. Many riders struggle with the isolation of these remote training camps, but not Niewiadoma-Phinney. 'It's not the lifestyle I want to continue for the rest of my life, but when I have a big goal I'm more than happy to dive into this monk's lifestyle,' she said. 'When you do that, you see the progress quickly.' This year's Tour has grown to nine stages, starting in Vannes on Saturday and heading east across France to a conclusion in the Alps. Memories of last year will fuel Niewiadoma-Phinney's search for more glory. 'Celebrations like that really make you tremble,' she said. 'I feel like we are hungry for more.'

Man Utd take huge financial hit on Marcus Rashford after dropping asking price twice

Manchester United are sending Marcus Rashford out on loan to Barcelona, who will have the option to sign him for a much lower fee than the club originally wanted Manchester United's desperation to get Marcus Rashford off their wage bill has seen them dramatically drop their valuation of the striker. Rashford is poised to join Barcelona on a season-long loan with an option to buy after being frozen out by Ruben Amorim at United. ‌ Amorim's relationship with Rashford broke down in December when he was ejected from the United first-team squad. He was then sent out on loan to Aston Villa in January, and having resurrected his career with four goals and six assists in 17 appearances, Rashford set his sights on Barca. ‌ The 27-year-old rejected a mega-money move to Saudi Arabia and has been waiting patiently for Barca and United to come to terms over a move. That has now happened and Rashford flew into the city earlier this week to complete the final stages of his move. ‌ Barcelona have agreed to take Rashford on loan for the 2025/26 season with an option to make it permanent. Barca will pay the entirety of his wages after Rashford agreed to take a 15 per cent pay cut from his £325,000-a-week wages. They can also sign him for €30million (£26m). Earlier this summer, United made it clear that they would happily sell Rashford to whichever club would stump up £40m. His contract with the club runs until June 2028, so their asking price wasn't outrageous, especially considering they believed he was worth £100m in April 2024 when Paris Saint-Germain were sniffing around. United's rapidly sliding scale around Rashford just demonstrates the sourness around the forward since Amorim made up his mind. The England striker has been part of Amorim's so-called 'bomb squad' over the past few weeks, forced to train separately from the first team at Carrington. Rashford and fellow unwanted players Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia have been arriving at the training ground post-5pm, when everyone else has already left. It is a brutal policy that doesn't have universal support inside the building but is designed to speed up their exits. It may have played a part in securing Rashford's exit, while Sancho is also poised to leave for Juventus. But what is more likely to have done the trick is United's desperation to offload their high-earning players who Amorim had made clear have no future at the club. ‌ Rashford was not Barcelona's first choice this summer. The Catalan giants had tried to sign Nico Williams from Athletic Club, but the move fell through. They also showed an interest in Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, but were put off by the Reds' transfer stance. 'I don't want to speak about players which are not in my team, but of course Luis Diaz and Marcus Rashford are fantastic players,' manager Hansi Flick said earlier in the summer. 'I like them and we'll see what happens.' Rashford will not be a guaranteed starter, either. He can play on the left of Barca's 4-3-3 formation, but will be aware that Raphinha has just enjoyed an incredible campaign in that position, while he will be a mere back-up to Robert Lewandowski at centre-forward.
