What Rory McIlroy talked about after The Open second round says it all about his chances

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Rory McIlroy was much improved on day two at The Open Championship, but the Northern Irishman knows he needs something special on Saturday to get back in contention - something he did 20 years ago would certainly help
After his second round of the 153rd Open, Rory McIlroy was again recalling his visit to Royal Portrush two decades ago.

He told us: 'I was saying to Tim Barter on Sky that it was 20 years ago that I played the North of Ireland here, and never in my wildest dreams did I think that I'd be coming back as a grand slam champion with the support of a nation behind me, trying to win an Open Championship.'

What McIlroy did not mention was that, during that North of Ireland Championship, he shot, as a 16-year-old, a round of 61 that is still spoken about in wondrous tones in the clubhouse of this storied course. Fast forward to 2025 and how McIlroy could do with another one of those over the weekend.

And here is the exciting thing. In his post-round demeanour and words, backed up by elements of his second round 69, there were signs that he clearly believes he will go low over the next two days.
Yes, it is a sizeable gap to the top of the leaderboard and really low scores are at a premium on this set-up.
McIlroy explained why, saying: 'It's one of these places where you know the holes you have to make par, you know the holes you have to make birdie, and everyone sort of has to play the golf course the same way. Everything becomes pretty bunched.'

But then he mentioned the possibility of having 'one of those out-of-the-blue days' - and no-one does out-of-the-blue quite like Rory. The key, of course, will be his performance off the tee.
When he almost sprayed one out of bounds on the second hole - and had to take a penalty drop from an unplayable lie, so deep was his ball buried in the fescue - the omens were not good.
But it got better as the round went on and while hitting four out of 14 fairways, as opposed to two on Thursday, is hardly anything to put up in lights, he was most accurate on the back nine, suggesting he had found the tweak to sort his problem. And his birdie on the par-5 12th was the template for what he has to do in rounds three and four.

A drive of over 300 yards that split the fairway and a towering mid-iron to 16 feet to set up an eagle attempt that shaved the hole. It was trademark McIlroy and, on another day - hopefully, moving day - those eagle putts will drop.
'I hit it in play a little bit more so it was nice to have some looks out of the fairway into some of the greens,' McIlroy smiled.

And he will need a lot more of those looks out of the fairway on Saturday if he is to put pressure on the leaders over the final two days. But in an effort that took him to three under for the tournament, there were strong hints that his A-game could emerge any time soon.
The quality and quantity of players ahead of him makes a shot at victory a formidable challenge but if anyone has the tools to meet that challenge, it is McIlroy.
As this golf course found out a long time before most of us.

Sky Sports pack drops by £330 in record low Virgin Media deal as Premier League nears

Virgin Media has slashed the price of several TV bundles that include Sky Sports access just in time for the new Premier League season. The brand's Summer of Sports sale offers discounts of up to £336 across select bundles until September 2. The price cuts come less than a month before the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season on August 15. The most affordable package is Virgin's Bigger Combo bundle + Sports, which has been reduced from £65.99 to £54.99 per month – a saving of £264. This package includes more than 200 TV channels, including eight Sky Sports channels such as Main Event, Football and F1. It also provides 516Mbps fibre broadband for smooth, lag-free streaming and gaming. The Biggest Combo bundle is also reduced, offering the same Sky Sports channels and 516Mbps broadband, but also including Sky Cinema and a free subscription to Netflix Standard with ads. This bundle is now priced at £64.99, down from £78.99 – a massive £336 saving. Virgin says these are the 'lowest ever' prices for its sports packages. Additionally, there's a £120 discount on Virgin's packed Mega Volt bundle, which provides more than 230 TV channels with Sky Sports HD, Sky Cinema HD and Netflix Standard with ads, plus a whopping 1,130Mbps broadband, reports the Mirror. This comprehensive package also includes an O2 SIM card with unlimited data, minutes and texts, for a monthly cost of £79.99, reduced from £84.99. Virgin customers can add a discounted TNT Sports package to their subscriptions for £18, compared to the usual £30.99 rate when signing up directly. All of Virgin's TV and broadband plans now have a 24-month term, matching with those offered by competitors such as Sky. However, it's worth noting that Virgin intends to raise its prices every April, with the Bigger Combo bundle + Sports set to increase to £58.49 from April 2026 and £61.99 from April 2027. The Summer of Sport sale sees Virgin going toe-to-toe with Sky's own discounted sports package, the £35 Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle. Although this option doesn't include broadband, it does offer nine dedicated sports channels, 100 regular channels including Sky Atlantic, and free subscriptions to Netflix Standard with ads and Discovery+. However, boxing fans should be aware that many of the biggest fights are only available through one-off pay-per-view payments. For instance, the Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois fight on July 19 can be ordered from DAZN for £24.99 or is currently included for free with a DAZN Annual plan. Virgin customers keen on sports will have plenty to cheer about as they can look forward to a minimum of 215 Premier League matches each season from 2025/26, with Sky ramping up its live game broadcasts from 128 to at least 215. One satisfied Virgin customer left a glowing review on Trustpilot, saying: "10 out of 10 for Virgin Media. We have been with Virgin for a year now and are very pleased with the service, it's been fantastic to have all the sports channels as we love football. I was able to get a great deal." Another user encountered some technical issues, saying: "Sometimes my Virgin box freezes, turns off and resets, and it takes around seven minutes to reboot. This is annoying when watching football." While another happy customer said: "I'm extremely happy with the product and service. The broadband speed is second to none and extremely reliable. The TV package is also superb – Ok, it doesn't have Sky Atlantic but with Netflix, Sky Cinema and all the Sports channels included, there's enough to watch."

The Open 2025 live: Rory McIlroy plots stunning Royal Portrush comeback as Scottie Scheffler leads

Rory McIlroy hopes to pull off an audacious comeback at The Open 2025 with Scottie Scheffler holding a commanding lead heading into Sunday's fourth round at Royal Portrush. The world No 1 is four shots clear of Haotong Li, with McIlroy able to conjure up both brilliance and the bizarre in an iconic round of golf on Saturday. Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton, Chris Gotterup, Harris English and defending champion Xander Schauffele are among the other contenders hoping to surge up the leaderboard if Scheffler stumbles. The fourth round begins at 8:30am with leaders Scheffler and Li completing Sunday's tee times at 2:30pm on one of golf's greatest days. I've done a really good job just being committed to my line. 'Today I hit some good putts to start the round. I had a little three-putt there on the second hole, but I felt like I hit two putts the way I wanted to and I didn't let it bother me. I made a really nice putt there on the third hole to keep the momentum going. 'It was a little 10-footer for par, and that was what I felt like was a really important putt, and knocked it in. Then after that I felt like I did some good things out there.' But then he burst into laughter, 'I was on the golf ball!' The baffling moment on the 11th saw his second shot connect barely millimeters above a buried old golf ball, which proceeded to spit up and out of the ground at contact. The most remarkable golf shot in one of the most remarkable rounds of golf, as a legion of McIlroy supporters weaved their way around the links on a baking day at Royal Portrush. McIlroy's audacious charge towards the imposing presence of Scottie Scheffler at the top of the leaderboard may well fall short on Sunday, but his presence, as the Masters champion, back home in Northern Ireland, conjured a unique moment. It epitomised how McIlroy remains one of the most engrossing athletes to watch in sport, all while Scheffler quietly dismantled both the course and field. There wasn't a blemish in the world No 1's round of 67, with his putter salvaging any minor wobbles. And while it secures a four-shot lead at -14 over Haotong Li at The Open 2025, the day belonged to McIlroy. The 38-year-old stirred early on, putting together three birdies in his first four holes before that bizarre and glorious combined for a five-under-par round of 66 to position him tied for fourth at -8.
