What is happening in South Korea? Seoul has caught the lovebug that nobody wants
But romance is certainly not in the air for residents of Seoul and neighboring Incheon city, who have been plagued by these pesky insects in recent weeks, as rising temperatures due to climate change spur their spread.
On Friday, dozens of government workers were sent to Gyeyangsan, a mountain west of the capital, to manage an 'extremely severe outbreak,' the country's environment ministry said in a statement.
Videos on social media earlier this week showed scenic hiking trails along the peak transformed into buzzing corridors of chaos.
Footage shows hikers thrashing through swarms of thumbnail-sized bugs, with one person engulfed by the black-winged creatures and another scooping thousands of tiny carcasses from the trail.
In a YouTube video, a man collected thousands of the insects and took them home to make them into hamburgers, which he then appeared to eat.
Lovebugs, known scientifically as Plecia longiforceps, get their nickname from their mating behavior when they fling into each other while flying.
They are found in the subtropics including southeastern China, Taiwan, and Japan's Ryukyu Islands. They also occur in parts of Central America and the southern United States, including Texas and Florida.
First detected in South Korea in 2015, they are believed to have arrived there from southern China, according to the environment ministry. Since 2022, they have appeared in and around Seoul, particularly port areas, between June and July, it added.
Experts say climate change and warming temperatures are helping drive lovebugs northward into areas such as Seoul and Incheon.
While global warming is a planet-wide issue, scientists have identified Seoul as an area where temperatures are rising at a faster pace than in other parts of the world.
This is worsened by the city's heat-island effect, where temperatures are much higher than in nearby rural areas due to man-made structures absorbing and holding more heat.
'With climate change increasing ecological instability, we must remain vigilant throughout the summer,' Kim Tae-o, director of the environment ministry, said.
Lovebugs do not transmit diseases or sting humans. However, there have been increasing public complaints about them sticking to car windows and the walls of houses, restaurants and subway trains.
So far, officials have advised local workers and residents to combat swarms by spraying water or using sticky pads instead of chemical pesticides.
Populations are expanding in the northwest of South Korea, however any further potential spread remains unknown.
'Compared with the past two years, the number of lovebugs sharply surged last weekend at the mountain,' Gyeyang district official Wang Hyeon-jeong said on Tuesday.
Areas with a warm, humid climate could attract them, being favorable conditions for their survival and reproduction.
The city government of Seoul views the lovebugs as 'ecologically beneficial,' posing no health risk to humans and helping pollinate flowers as their larvae convert plant materials into organic components.
However, local media reports that complaints to the city have more than doubled, increasing from 4,418 in 2023 to 9,296 last year, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
On Friday, environment ministers agreed to strengthen and invest more in response procedures after the latest outbreak, which it described as 'extremely severe.'
'We will closely monitor the situation and work with local authorities from the early stages of any outbreak,' Kim said.
But natural population control is reportedly setting in, as birds such as sparrows and magpies learn to eat the bugs, causing their numbers to fall.

Hikers' Perfect Response to Grizzly Family Encounter in Glacier National Park Could Save Lives
Hikers' Perfect Response to Grizzly Family Encounter in Glacier National Park Could Save Lives originally appeared on PetHelpful. Every national park has its own wonders to explore, from glaciers and geysers to rolling desert dunes. Many national parks are even dog-friendly, but solo hikers and pet parents alike need to be vigilant for hazards such as cliffs and wild animals. On July 29 in Glacier National Park, Montana, a group of unsuspecting hikers crossed paths with a large female grizzly bear. As if they weren't nervous enough already, she had cubs with her, too! One of the hikers, @ joetheduffy, recorded the nerve-wracking encounter 'in case of death,' though I'm happy to report everyone lived to tell this terrifying tale. OMG, what a close call! I could hear the panic rising in Joe's voice as he processed the situation, though I have no idea how he stayed so calm. Something tells me this wasn't his first National Park bear encounter! A commenter summed up Joe's unspoken thought process perfectly when they wrote, "Bear? Ok. Grizzly bear? Ok that's scary. Grizzly bear with cubs? I might die today." Joe himself also delivered one of the greatest one-liners of all-time, despite being mid-panic and walking backwards: "this would be wonderful, if it weren't horrible." Anyone who's accidentaly come face-to-face with a bear will be able to relate! Being that close to a bear would leave anyone quaking in their hiking boots, but seeing bear cubs in a situation like this isn't a good thing. They're cute, that's true, but mama bears are known to be overly protective. Luckily, this experienced outdoorsman and his group knew exactly what to do to avoid an escalating situation. Bear Encounters 101 Fortunately, violent encounters between humans and animals are rare, but there's still a lot to learn before hiking in bear country. Take a note from Joe's book, for example, by announcing your presence if you even suspect you're in the presence of a bear. In fact, it's become a bit of a running joke on social media that simply saying 'hey bear' will do the trick! And if you think about it, this is basically another example supporting that theory. "You're doing exactly the correct thing," another viewer commented. "You are announcing your presence while backing away at a calm pace. She knows you're there, she knows you're not a threat. She is minding her business, you're minding yours. Everything is great." Great may not be everyone's first thought after watching this video, but there's no question that this was pretty much best-case-scaenario. Fortunatley, most bear encounters are! What Travelers Need to Know About the Fire Raging at the Grand Canyon
The Dragon Bravo Fire, which destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge and has forced the closure of parts of Grand Canyon National Park, grew to more than 123,000 acres on Monday. The sweeping wildfire is 13 percent contained and continues to pose risks for visitors. The North Rim, a remote area that draws only about 10 percent of the park's visitors, has borne the brunt of the damage and is closed through 2025. The more popular South Rim remains open, though various restrictions are in place. There are also closures within the inner canyon because of smoke accumulation, particularly on trails that link the North and South Rims to the Colorado River below. Here's what travelers should know about safety and the fires in the Grand Canyon. Is it safe to visit Grand Canyon National Park? Yes, much of the park remains safe to visit, though travelers should heed the latest alerts from the National Park Service. In addition to the fire closures, the park also issued an extreme heat warning on Monday, citing 'dangerously hot conditions' in the lower elevations of the Grand Canyon. (Summer heat can be deadly for hikers at the park.) The park recommends that all hikers bring adequate gear, including sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, salty snacks, sufficient water and electrolyte drink mix. 'Doubling your calorie intake helps maintain your energy,' the warning states. As always, travelers should remain cautious about hiking alone and should familiarize themselves with the locations of water stations within the park to help avoid dehydration. Travelers should also monitor the air quality. As a general rule, an Air Quality Index over 100 or above can pose health risks for older adults, children and people with lung or heart conditions. An index above 150 is considered unhealthy. Visitors should consider wearing a mask if air quality worsens. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Son Heung-Min Has Last Dance In Seoul As Tottenham Hotspur Exit Looms
In a non-descript meeting room above a mall in the heart of Seoul's financial district, Son Heung-min announced on Saturday what many had been expecting, that he would leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer. His next destination: likely Major League Soccer and LAFC. Even before Son's announcement, there had been rumors that he would leave Spurs after Tottenham's tour of Asia. There was even speculation in the local media that he would've already left Spurs if not for contract obligations that required Son to play in the friendly match against Newcastle United in Seoul on Sunday. Spurs In Seoul That game is Spurs' fifth game in South Korea in the past four years. Those tours have proved highly lucrative, with the tours' sponsor Coupang, Korea's answer to Amazon, using them to launch its streaming service and this year, its 'Sports Pass' add-on after it acquired the rights to broadcast Premier League matches for the upcoming season. On Sunday, the Seoul World Cup Stadium, kitted out in Coupang's blue and white logos, was a sea of Tottenham shirts by the time Spurs players entered the pitch for their warm-up 40 minutes before kick off. When Spurs arrived in Korea, they were met at the airport by crowds of fans. Not just Sonny, but other Spurs players have grown in popularity in Korea on the back of all these visits. One fan, crying uncontrollably, even presented James Maddison with a large painted portrait. Many of these fans will be Spurs fans for life, but there will inevitably be a bit of a drop off in interest from South Koreans once Son leaves. The question for Spurs' marketing department now will be how big that drop off will be. Will Spurs without Son visit Seoul next summer? The stooges for this year's game, Newcastle United, clearly don't have the same pull as Spurs in South Korea. Newcastle's match in Suwon against an all-star team from the local K-League earlier in the week attracted just 27,000 fans. Even a half time concert by K-pop stars IVE couldn't draw fans to watch the match against two teams seemingly cobbled together at the last minute. Newcastle's pre-season has been defined by the transfer saga surrounding Alexander Isak. Head coach Eddie Howe on Saturday, in between calling Son 'one of the legends of the Premier League' and answering questions on other Korean soccer players, batted away questions about Isak and his whereabouts. While losing Isak would massively weaken Newcastle, Spurs head coach Thomas Frank also has to plan for life without Son Heung-min, although this could allow Frank to rebuild Spurs more in his own image. Son Heung-min's Last Dance It only took three minutes of the match against Newcastle before fans saw Son's trademark camera square celebration. But it was Brennan Johnson who got the goal. Son Heung-min missed a good chance a few minutes later and had a shot blocked after a breakaway attack later in the first half. Newcastle equalized shortly afterward. Son Heung-min was substituted on 63 minutes, receiving a standing ovation and getting a guard of honor from the players on the pitch before hugging all the members of the Spurs bench as the crowd chanted his name. Son was replaced by Tottenham's biggest signing of the summer so far, Mohammed Kudus. The match finished 1-1. Leaving As A Legend After captaining Spurs to Europa League glory last season, Son Heung-min goes out on a high, but he also leaves Spurs just as his ability to change games is starting to wane. Son's seven Premier league goals last season was the first time he has failed to score ten league goals since his first season in north London. Injuries and Spurs' awful form are a large part of the reason for that, but it would be foolish to expect Son to be able to hit the heights of 2018 to 2022 again with Spurs next season. Now does feel like the right time for Son to leave Spurs as 'a legend' and start the next chapter of his career.
