Wilmington downs Hub City in extra innings
Hub City starter Leandro Lopez was strong through 5 2/3 innings, racking up seven strikeouts and keeping Wilmington from reaching third base. The Dominican righty allowed three hits and four walks. Lopez retired seven straight batters from the third through fifth. His opposite, left-hander Jackson Kent, was even better, spinning six scoreless innings and only throwing 71 pitches.
The Spartanburgers used relievers Seth Clark and Mailon Felix to bridge the gap from Lopez to extras. Clark struck out three of the four batters he faced. Felix dodged a pair of hits in the final two frames of regulation. It was a one-man show out of the bullpen for Wilmington. Erik Tolman set down all nine batters he faced in relief of Kent.
Keith Jones II had the only hit of the first 10 innings for the Spartanburgers. In extras, Wilmington scored two runs in the top of the 11th against Wilian Bormie (L, 1-5): automatic runner Gavin Dugas touched the plate on Sam Petersen's RBI double, and Petersen came home on a Caleb Lomavita knock.
Defensively, Quincy Scott showed off his arm in center field with two outfield assists, including one to end the top of the 11th. The Spartanburgers picked up a pair of hits from Gleider Figuereo and Scott in the bottom half. Figuereo drove in the automatic runner, Anthony Gutierrez. Wady Mendez ran for Figuereo and reached third with two outs on the Scott hit. Miguel Gomez (W, 1-0) struck out pinch-hitter Luis Marquez to strand the tying run at third.
Hub City and Wilmington match up for the second game of the series Wednesday. Spartanburgers RHP Aidan Curry (2-1, 5.28 ERA) will toss the first pitch at 6:35 p.m. ET. The Blue Rocks counter with Travis Sthele (3-2, 4.37 ERA).

The top reliever available ahead of the MLB trade deadline appears close to being dealt. That's Minnesota Twins closer Jhoan Duran. He broke in as a 24-year old in 2022 and had a 1.86 ERA with 89 strikeouts in 67.2 innings. In 2023, Duran put up a 2.45 ERA with 84 more punchouts in 62.1 innings. He struggled the most in 2024, with a 3.64 ERA and a 6-9 record while striking out 66 in 54.1 innings. Duran is back to his usual self statistically this season with a 2.01 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 49.1 innings. If he went to the Dodgers, he'd probably be the closer. Between injuries and ineffectiveness, their bullpen hasn't quite shaped up the way they expected it to. The Mariners already have a strong closer in right-hander Andres Munoz, so that'd be a less certain situation. It'd be great for Seattle to have both guys, but as far as how they'd be used together, that'd be something to be figured out if they can actually pull off the deal for Duran. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jarren Duran went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs, Trevor Story hit his second homer in as many games, and the Red Sox earned a series win with a 13-1 victory at Minnesota on Wednesday. Red Sox starter Brayan Bello yielded one earned run on five hits in seven innings with four strikeouts. The Dominican right-hander has recorded a quality start in nine of his past 10 outings. Canada's para hockey players join women, NHLers at 2026 orientation camps
CALGARY — Hockey Canada has invited 20 para hockey players to a national team orientation camp in Calgary as first step toward the 2026 Paralympic Games. The roster includes 16 players who helped Canada win gold at the 2024 world championship, as well as nine who claimed a silver medal at the 2022 Paralympic Games in Beijing. Defenders Rob Armstrong, Zach Lavin and Tyrone Henry, forwards Adam Dixon, Liam Hickey, James Dunn, Tyler McGregor and Anton Jacobs-Webb and goaltender Adam Kingsmill played on both squads. The three goalies, six defenceman and 11 forwards will participate in an orientation camp Aug. 26-28 alongside 30 women and 42 NHL players also summoned to Calgary for the women's and men's Olympic team camps. The Paralympic Games run March 5-15 after the Olympic Games Feb. 6-22 in Milan and Cortina, Italy. Hockey Canada senior vice-president of hockey operations Scott Salmond called the camps the first step toward the goal of winning three gold medals across Olympic and Paralympic hockey. 'While the next several months will bring intense evaluation and difficult roster decisions, we look forward to kicking off the season in Calgary and giving our athletes and staff a chance to come together and start to become one team as we set our sights on February,' he said Friday in a statement.
