Playing at Coachella 2025, EDM duo Indo Warehouse spotlight South Asian culture

At a live DJ event one Friday night in January, roughly 600 people at Soho House Hong Kong in Sheung Wan grooved to electronic dance music (EDM) interwoven with a distinctly South Asian sound.

Periodically, Bollywood anthems such as Patakha Guddi and Chaiyaa Chaiyaa, and Maghron La from season 15 of TV music show Coke Studio Pakistan, emerged over the house beats.
The crowd's approval shone as they enthusiastically sang along to the recognisable hits.
This fresh sound was courtesy of Armaan Gupta, aka Kahani, and Kunal Merchant, who co-founded the dance music collective Indo Warehouse in 2022 in New York, where they live.

It was the first time they had played in Hong Kong, coming fresh from a sold-out tour in the United States. Given the city's sizeable South Asian community and the duo's exposure on social media, the enthusiastic response on January 17 was not surprising.

'A lot of people from Hong Kong sent us video messages of them pre-partying to our Brooklyn Mirage sets before they went out,' Merchant says. 'They were at home, but watching our shows on YouTube.'

Padukone married Ranveer Singh on Italy's Lake Como in 2018, while Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor tied the knot in Mumbai in 2022. Both women are ambassadors for luxury European fashion houses, so it came as no surprise when Padukone stunned in a monochrome look – complete with leather gloves and a statement hat – at Louis Vuitton's autumn/winter 2025 womenswear show during Paris Fashion Week earlier this year. Bollywood dance video filmed at Oxford University goes viral on Instagram

A group of current and former Oxford University students have become an online sensation after a Bollywood-style video shot around the prestigious British campus went viral. The performance involving about seven friends was shot to Desi Boyz, the title track of the 2011 romantic comedy of the same name starring Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Deepika Padukone and Chitrangada Singh. The idea for the clip came from Druv Punjabi, an Oxford alumnus who was born and raised in Hong Kong. 'This is something I had wanted to do for a long time,' says Punjabi by phone from Dubai, where he is now based. 'We really wanted to show off Oxford and the surrounding cityscape, so when the university said they were keen to collaborate it came as a bit of a shock.' Another shock was to follow, with the video blowing up online. So far it has racked up more than 240,000 views.

From Cannes to Oscars, Bollywood's women challenge India's ‘misogynistic' storylines

India 's giant movie industry is known for its macho, male-centric storylines, but a wave of women filmmakers is helping to break the mould. Advertisement 'More women are writing their stories, turning them into films,' said writer-director Reema Kagti, who believes the trend brought a more 'real and healthy perspective' to films, with complex, outspoken women characters who are masters of their own story. The world's most populous nation churns out 1,800 to 2,000 films in more than 20 languages annually – and Hindi-language Bollywood is one of the largest segments, with more than 300 productions. Yet the films have often failed to portray women authentically, choosing instead to box them into being passive housewives or mothers who bow to societal pressure. A 2023 study by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences found that female characters in most chart-topping Indian films play the role of a romantic interest – and were 'fair skinned with a thin body type and a small screen time'.
