Liverpool beat Athletic Club in five-goal thriller in pre-season friendly

Liverpool recorded a 3-2 victory over Athletic Club in their second Anfield encounter of the day with the La Liga side on Monday.
Mohamed Salah steered the Reds into an early lead, finishing with trademark aplomb from Hugo Ekitike's cutback across the area.
Oihan Sancet levelled for the opposing side on 29 minutes following a set-piece, but Cody Gakpo restored the home side's advantage when he converted from close range shortly after half-time.
Athletic Club then equalised for a second time, Maroan Sannadi finding the net via a deflection with a header at a corner.

Gakpo's Decisive Goal and Liverpool's Anfield Debuts: Key Moments from the Match
The touch had come off Gakpo inside the area; however, the Netherlands forward would once again put Liverpool in front by drilling a low shot across goal and under Unai Simon in what would prove the game's deciding moment.
Five of Liverpool's summer arrivals were handed Anfield debuts for the club, with Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Florian Wirtz named in the XI. A counter-attack resulted in Ekitike sending Gakpo racing down the left. His cross into the centre took Simon out of the game and found the head of Wirtz, who looped an effort onto the roof of the net with five minutes played.
Then, shortly after, a free-kick routine on the edge of the area saw Salah roll the ball off to Dominik Szoboszlai, whose powerful drive was parried by the visitors' goalkeeper.

An even better opening would be fashioned as the Anfield scoreboard showed 13 minutes, with Salah playing a remarkable pass across the box for Gakpo. A scoop towards the far post skidded just wide.
Nevertheless, Liverpool's early pressure duly told. Szoboszlai prodded a pass into space for Ekitike to run into. He skipped beyond Daniel Vivian with a double step-over and cut it back across the area, where Salah collected – albeit with a slight touch of fortune - and steered into the net.
One could have been two inside 60 seconds, but Wirtz's hook at goal from a Salah centre was parried by Simon.
However, for all of the Reds' dominance, Athletic Club levelled just before the half-hour mark when Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta's free-kick towards the back post from deep was nudged back into the area by Vivian, allowing Sancet to take a touch and swipe in from 10 yards.
Ryan Gravenberch's powerful blast from range threatened to put the hosts back in front almost immediately, but Simon pushed over the crossbar.

Former Arsenal player Partey granted bail on rape charges
Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey was granted conditional bail on Tuesday after appearing in a London court on rape and sexual assault charges. The 32-year-old Ghana international has been charged with five counts of rape against two women and one count of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player. Partey was charged on July 4, four days after leaving the Gunners when his contract expired at the end of June. A spokesperson for Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence said the group was "profoundly disappointed" in the London club over their handling of the matter. Speaking outside court, Honor Barber told the PA news agency: "We never wanted to be in a situation where the club that we love and the club that has values that we believe in was playing, week-in, week-out, a player who is now facing court appearances on six counts of sexual violence. "We protested outside almost every home game last season because we wanted to disrupt the wall of silence that the club has put up around this issue." Barber said the group wanted the club to publish their sexual violence policies, "suspend anyone under investigation for sexual offences" and "properly support the survivors". British police said they first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022. Partey joined Arsenal for £45 million ($60 million) from Atletico Madrid in October 2020. He appeared 52 times for the Gunners last season, scoring four goals. Overall he played 167 games for the club, scoring nine times. Partey has also made 51 appearances for Ghana.

Hobbled at home, Nigerian sportswomen dominate abroad
As Nigerian women dominate sports on the continent, they're facing off not just against top talent abroad but a domestic atmosphere of mismanagement and pay disparities -- and even the risk of repression for speaking out. Nigeria is fresh off a win at the finals of Women's AfroBasket, their fifth-consecutive championship at the continent's top hardwood tournament, while last month the Super Falcons clinched their 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations football title. The football team's successes in particular have come in the face of pay disparities compared to their male counterparts -- when they get paid at all. The women receive a training camp allowance but the bulk of their pay comes from per-match bonuses, which vary depending on the team's results. Both the women's basketball and football teams have been plagued by late or unpaid match bonuses for years, despite their records as arguably the best teams on the continent. But when the Super Falcons landed in Abuja after their 3-2 WAFCON victory over host Morocco last month, none of the players answered questions shouted by an AFP reporter in the press scrum about whether they would ask the president, who was welcoming them at his villa, about being paid the same as the men's team. Nigerian journalists on the scene said the question was useless: it was far too politically charged. "If you speak up against what's going on, you completely lose the possibility of getting what you're entitled to, you could actually be blacklisted," Solace Chukwu, senior editor at Afrik-Foot Nigeria, later told AFP. - Strikes over late payments - Not that there aren't clashes: in 2021, basketballers called out the authorities when they topped Africa, protesting against unpaid match bonuses. The Nigeria Basketball Federation at the time denied any wrongdoing, blaming the issue on clerical errors. Like the basketball team, the women's football team has found remarkable success, stemming in part from the country's population of more than 200 million -- the largest on the continent, complemented by a widespread diaspora. They also benefited from early investments in women's football at a time when other African countries focused on men's teams, Chukwu said, helping the Super Falcons win the first seven editions of the WAFCON, from 1991 to 2006. Yet they only played a handful of test matches before they landed in Morocco for this year's competition, cobbled together at the last second. The Super Falcons haven't been completely silent in the face of mismanagement and disinterest from authorities. But rocking the boat too much appears to come with a cost. "Players who lead or dare to protest... always risk not being invited or sidelined outrightly," said Harrison Jalla, a players' union official. After Super Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie -- now a commentator -- led protests over unpaid wages at the 2019 Women's World Cup, she was stripped of her captaincy and was not called up for the 2022 tournament. I feel like maybe, one year we should host the AfroBasket." Aisha Falode, an NFF official, meanwhile, called on the government to "invest in the facilities, invest in the leagues and the players, because the women's game can no longer be taken lightly". Despite the challenges, women's sports are still finding a foothold among younger fans. Justina Oche, 16, a player at a football academy in Abuja, told AFP that the exploits of the team inspired her to pursue a career in the sport. Wirtz unfazed by huge Liverpool price tag
Florian Wirtz says his huge price tag "doesn't matter" as he prepares for his first season in the Premier League after a switch to champions Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen. The attacking midfielder arrived at Anfield for an initial £100 million ($132 million) that could rise to £116 million with add-ons, making his move a potential British record.
