As entrepreneurs in Hong Kong embark on their growth journeys, they can turn to the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) for guidance along the way. As part of its mission to promote Hong Kong as a hub for global investment and business, the HKTDC works with start-ups as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to create tangible opportunities for them to expand internationally, in addition to providing business information and advisory services.
Jason Chen, CEO of Wada FoodTech, says the Hong Kong Trade Development Council was instrumental in helping his company's expansion into Japan.
One such start-up that has benefited from its support is Wada FoodTech, a smart catering solutions provider originally based in Hong Kong's Cyberport business park but which now has additional offices in Tokyo and Osaka. The company, which uses the brand name Wada Bento, has developed decentralised food vending machines that serve hot meal boxes to hungry customers in as little as nine seconds.

Established in 2018, Wada FoodTech helps optimise food management across the catering supply chain. Its recent expansion in Japan – a country famous for its bento boxes and vending machines – is testament to the strength of both the firm's offering and strategy.

In early December, the HKTDC held its annual Entrepreneur Day (E-Day) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This event serves as a platform for entrepreneurs to tap into global markets, offering opportunities for networking and business matching along with support services tailor-made for start-ups.
The 2024 edition of E-Day also featured the InnoClub Awards, which spotlight groundbreaking start-ups and SMEs from the Greater Bay Area. WadaFood Tech received the InnoClub Industry Impact Award in recognition of its innovative digitised model for food service, which leverages patented hot-chain vending machines and AIoT, or 'artificial intelligence and Internet of Things' technology, to strengthen food safety controls while also boosting efficiency.
In addition, WadaFood Tech signed a memorandum of understanding with Harada Corporation during E-Day. The Japanese general trading company has experience in a wide array of businesses, including food innovations, that can help the Wada Bento brand strengthen its presence in the Japanese market.

Wada FoodTech, which also showcased its technology at the event, said the partnership reflected the company's commitment to expanding its vending machine operations in Japan, with a focus on Tokyo and Osaka.

ADB acting on US concerns over China, bank chief says
The Asian Development Bank was trying 'very hard' to accommodate US concerns over lending to China, the bank's president told AFP, including by slashing loans to the world's second-largest economy. Global development institutions are in Spain this week for a UN summit on financial aid for the world's poorest overshadowed by Washington's gutting of poverty and climate change programs. The United States is a major donor to multilateral banks like the ABD, but Washington's future commitment to development lenders has been in doubt since the election of President Donald Trump. In April, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged ADB President Masato Kanda 'to take concrete steps' to end loans to rival China. Kanda said lending to Beijing was 'radically decreasing' and had already halved from $2 billion in 2020 to $1 billion in 2024. 'We are already on… a declining trajectory,' the Japanese head of the Manila-based lender told AFP in an interview in Paris on Friday. 'Probably — I can't promise — but probably this declining trajectory will be continued, and someday may be zero,' he added, stressing that such a decision would ultimately be decided by the bank's shareholders and board of directors. Kanda said US demands that ADB curtail financing for China were hardly new and probably 'one of the very few agendas across the aisle in the US Congress'. 'Even under the Biden administration, it was the same request,' Kanda said, referring to the last administration under President Joe Biden. The United States and Japan are the largest shareholders of ADB, which helps bankroll projects in the Asia-Pacific region that lift living standards and promote economic growth. China, India and Australia are also significant members. 'Universal' challenge Kanda said ADB's efforts to raise lending without asking more of taxpayers in donor countries 'was very much appreciated by the United States and others'. 'I try very hard to accommodate the issues of the United States,' he said. Kanda is among thousands this week attending the International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, the biggest event in a decade on the crisis-hit aid sector. The United States in snubbing the UN-sponsored conference, underlining the erosion of global cooperation on combating hunger, disease and climate change. Trump's cuts have come under particular scrutiny but Germany, Britain and France have also slashed foreign aid while boosting spending in areas such as defence. With budgets in doubt, multilateral development banks have come under particular pressure to step up financing for projects that tackle global warming and prepare poorer countries for climate disaster. Last year, rich countries committed $300 billion annually by 2035 for climate finance in the developing world — well short of the $1.3 trillion that experts say is needed. Last year, the ADB committed to channelling half its annual lending to climate-related projects by 2030 and Kanda said it was likely this would grow in time. The bank was navigating a level of global uncertainty not seen in many decades but it was critical to consider the most vulnerable on the rocky road ahead, he added. 'This is not just a short-term phenomenon of one country, but it is rather universal,' he said. 'This is a really difficult situation. And as long as we don't improve the root cause of this situation — for instance, a more fair society — it will not be so easy.'

China to restart imports of some Japanese seafood after nearly 2-year Fukushima ban
China has lifted a ban on seafood imports from most regions of Japan, partially mending a years-long dispute over Tokyo's handling of nuclear wastewater. China and Japan are key trading partners, but increased friction over territorial rivalries and military spending has frayed ties in recent years. Japan's brutal occupation of parts of China before and during World War II remains a sore point, with Beijing accusing Tokyo of failing to atone for its past. Japan began gradually releasing treated wastewater from the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean in 2023. The move was backed by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the plant operator TEPCO says all radioactive elements have been filtered out except for tritium, levels of which are within safe limits. But it drew sharp criticism from Beijing, which banned imports of Japanese seafood as a result. Russia later followed suit. Samples from long-term monitoring of nuclear-contaminated water from Fukushima had 'not shown abnormalities', China's General Administration of Customs said in a statement Sunday. As a result, China 'decided to conditionally resume' seafood imports from Japan, with the exception of imports from 10 of the country's 47 prefectures, including Fukushima and Tokyo, which remain banned. The Japanese government received the decision 'positively', Kazuhiko Aoki, deputy chief cabinet secretary, told reporters in Tokyo. But Japan 'will strongly demand the Chinese side lift remaining import regulations on seafood from 10 prefectures', he added. Japanese Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi also called China's move 'a major milestone'. In 2011, a huge earthquake triggered a deadly tsunami that swamped the Fukushima nuclear facility and pushed three of its six reactors into meltdown. China vociferously opposed the release of the treated wastewater, casting it as environmentally irresponsible. But in September last year it said it would 'gradually resume' importing the seafood. Production companies that had suspended trade must reapply for registration in China and would be 'strictly' supervised, Beijing's customs administration said Sunday.

File photo: Reuters Japanese factory output rose at a slower pace than expected in May, government data showed on Monday, as sweeping US tariffs were threatening to derail the country's already fragile economic recovery. Industrial output rose 0.5 percent in May from the previous month, data from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) showed, less than a median market forecast for a 3.5 percent rise. Manufacturers surveyed by METI expect seasonally adjusted output to rise 0.3 percent in June and fall 0.7 percent in July. Tokyo is scrambling to find ways to get Washington to exempt its automakers from automobile industry-specific tariffs of 25 percent, which are dealing a heavy blow to the country's manufacturing sector. Japan also faces a 24 percent "reciprocal" tariff rate starting on July 9 unless it can negotiate a deal with Washington. The hit from US tariffs could derail Japan's lacklustre economic recovery. Subdued private consumption already caused the world's fourth-largest economy to shrink in January-March, the first contraction in a year. The US tariffs also complicate the Bank of Japan's endeavour to raise still-low interest rates and reduce a balance sheet that has ballooned to roughly the size of Japan's economy. (Reuters)
