Railways to install CCTV cameras in train coaches to enhance passenger safety

Mint13-07-2025
Buoyed by the positive outcome of experimental installation of CCTV (closed-circuit television) cameras in passenger coaches, the Indian Railways has decided to set up this video surveillance system in all coaches.
The move is aimed at improving passenger safety, while also ensuring that luggage theft in trains in curbed.
Miscreants and organized gangs take advantage of gullible passengers. With cameras, such incidents can be significantly reduced, the ministry of railways said in a statement.
To preserve the privacy of passengers, CCTV cameras will be installed in the common movement area near the doors.
Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and junior railway minister Ravneet Singh Bittu reviewed the progress of CCTV cameras' installation in locomotives and coaches. The meeting held on 12 July was attended by senior officials of the Railway Board.
The railway officials informed that successful trials have been done in the locomotive engines and coaches of the Northern Railway. Vaishnaw gave the go-ahead to install CCTV cameras in all 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locos. Each railway coach will be covered with 4 dome-type CCTV cameras - 2 in each entrance way and each locomotive will have 6 CCTV cameras.
This will include one camera each at the front, rear and on both sides of the locomotive. Each cab (front and rear) of a loco will be fitted with one dome CCTV camera and two desk-mounted microphones.
The officials said that the CCTV cameras will have the latest specifications and will be STQC (Standardization Testing and Quality Certification) certified. Vaishnaw emphasised on deploying the best-in-class equipment. He urged the railway officials to ensure that high-quality footage should be available even for trains running at 100 kmph-plus speeds and also under low lighting conditions.
He encouraged the officials to explore the use of artificial intelligence on the data captured by CCTV cameras, in collaboration with the IndiaAI mission.
The purpose of fitting cameras in the common movement areas of coaches is to improve safety and security of passengers. While preserving privacy, these cameras will help in identifying miscreants. The modernization efforts of Indian Railways are a reflection of its commitment towards a safe, secure, and passenger-friendly travel experience, the ministry statement added.

Delhi Police busts illegal arms and fake currency cartel; five arrested

New Delhi, Jul 25 (PTI) An illegal arms and fake currency smuggling cartel that utilised coded messaging on social media platforms to coordinate operations has been busted and five of its members, including a former railway employee, were arrested, a police official said on Friday. He said the cartel sourced illegal firearms from Madhya Pradesh and counterfeit currency from Siwan in Bihar, and distributed them across Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. Ten pistols, 68 cartridges, fake currency worth Rs 4.10 lakh in Rs 500 denomination, and three vehicles, including a bulletproof SUV, were recovered from their possession, the official said. In a statement, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Amit Kaushik said, 'The accused have been identified as Ravi Thakur (35), Yogesh Phogat (28), Meera (27), Kuldeep alias Chhotu (33), and Samsu Khan alias Rehan (27). Samsu Khan was the mastermind, and Kuldeep used to work in Group D services of the Indian Railways in Ambala Cantonment." The DCP said Ravi was the first to be arrested. He was caught with five pistols and 10 cartridges near a transit point in Delhi on July 6. An auto driver from Mathura, Ravi began supplying weapons for Rs 5,000 per firearm after getting acquainted with some handlers of arms supply chains in Madhya Pradesh. His interrogation led to the arrest of Yogesh, who allegedly financed weapons purchases and stored them in his car. One pistol was recovered from his vehicle. Further investigation led to the arrest of Kuldeep, who was found with another illegal pistol and 35 cartridges. 'In 2014, Kuldeep was selected for Group D services of Indian Railways. However, a case was registered in 2019-20, after a quarrel took place between him and one Narwal over financial matters. After this incident, Kuldeep did not join duty. He remained absent since 2022 and lived at his native place," DCP Kaushik added. During his stay in his native village, Kuldeep began supplying illegal arms to gangs after procuring them from Yogesh and some others. 'In 2022, he purchased an SUV and modified to make it bullet proof. In January 2023, he was caught twice while supplying illegal arms in Sonipat. After being released from jail, he resumed the arms smuggling," Kaushik said. On July 24, Meera, a key member of the supply chain, was arrested from Mathura. Five cartridges were recovered from her residence. 'Meera, estranged from her husband, became involved in smuggling through her acquaintance with Samsu Khan. She operated from Mathura and supplied weapons to Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Mumbai," the DCP added. The following day, acting on Meera's inputs, police arrested the alleged kingpin, Samsu Khan from Firozabad. A raid at his residence led to the recovery of three pistols, 28 live cartridges, and Rs 4.10 lakh in fake Rs 500 notes. Samsu was wanted in a 2024 arms case filed by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad. He was operating from Hooghly in West Bengal and coordinated supplies using digital communication. He also allegedly sourced fake currency from Siwan. Further investigation is underway to apprehend more members of the cartel and trace the full supply chain of illegal arms and fake currency, the DCP added. Mumbai Suburban Rail Death Toll Hits 2,282 In 2024; Trespassing, Falls Biggest Contributor

Last Updated: The minister also noted that increasing frequency of suburban train services is an ongoing process, subject to operational feasibility, traffic demand, and resource availability. A total of 2,282 fatalities were reported on Mumbai's suburban railway network in 2024 due to causes such as trespassing, pole hitting, falling from running trains, and platform gaps, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The data was shared in a written response to a question raised by Congress MP Sasikanth Senthil, who flagged commuter safety concerns on Mumbai's overburdened local train system. The minister noted that issues of law and order and public safety fall under the jurisdiction of state governments, as defined by the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution. He said enforcement responsibilities lie with the Government Railway Police (GRP) and district police, while the Railway Protection Force (RPF) works in coordination to supplement their efforts in securing passengers and railway property. 'According to information received from GRP, 2,282 fatalities were reported on Mumbai's suburban railway network in 2024 due to various reasons such as trespassing, pole hitting, falling from running trains, and falling into platform gaps," Vaishnaw stated. The minister provided a district-wise breakdown of the fatalities: Commenting on a recent train-related incident near Mumbra station, Vaishnaw said a committee has been formed to investigate the cause. On the issue of enhancing commuter safety, he highlighted the introduction of AC local trains with automatic doors as a positive intervention. These doors remain closed while the train is in motion and only open at stations, reducing the risk of accidents caused by passengers boarding moving trains or hanging from footboards—common contributors to fatal mishaps. The minister also noted that increasing the frequency of suburban train services is an ongoing process, subject to operational feasibility, traffic demand, and resource availability. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 2,282 fatalities reported on Mumbai's suburban railway network in 2024: Railway Minister Vaishnaw

Mr. Vaishnaw's written reply was in response to the issue of commuters' safety on Mumbai suburban trains raised by Congress MP Sasikanth Senthil. A total of 2,282 fatalities were reported on Mumbai's suburban railway network in 2024 due to trespassing, pole hitting, falling from running trains and in platform gaps and other reasons, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told Lok Sabha on Wednesday (July 23, 2025). Mr. Vaishnaw's written reply was in response to the issue of commuters' safety on Mumbai suburban trains raised by Congress MP Sasikanth Senthil. The Minister said that 'police' and 'public order' are state subjects under the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution and therefore, state governments are responsible for prevention, detection, registration, and investigation of crime and maintenance of law and order on Railways through their law enforcement agencies, viz. Government Railway Police (GRP)/district police. "Railway Protection Force (RPF) supplements the efforts of GRP/ district police to provide better protection and security to railway property, passenger area and passengers and for matters connected therewith," he said. He added, "As per information received from GRP, 2,282 fatalities were reported on Mumbai's suburban railway network in 2024 due to various reasons such as trespassing, pole hitting, falling from running trains, falling in platform gap etc." Giving the district-wise fatalities in the suburban railway network, Mr. Vaishnaw said that while Mumbai reported 1408 fatalities, Thane recorded 615 such cases. He added that Raigarh and Navi Mumbai registered 128 and 131 cases of fatalities respectively. Talking about the recent train incident in Mumbai suburban, Mr. Vaishnaw said a committee has been constituted to investigate the cause of the incident near Mumbra station. He also highlighted passenger safety initiatives and said that the introduction of AC local trains equipped with automatic doors in Mumbai has been a welcome initiative to enhance commuters' safety and reduce incidents related to overcrowding. "The automatic doors prevent passengers from hanging on footboards or boarding moving trains which is a major cause of fatal accidents. These doors remain closed while the train is in motion and open only at stations when the train is stationary, thereby significantly reducing the risk of falls," Mr. Vaishnaw said. "Increase in frequency of the train services including suburban train services is an ongoing process over Indian Railways subject to operational feasibility, traffic justification and availability of resources etc," Union Miniter Vishnaw added.
