Trinidad and Tobago imposes another state of emergency after uncovering plot to kill key officials

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — Trinidad and Tobago declared a new state of emergency on Friday after authorities accused a criminal network operating in prisons across the country of plotting to kill key government officials and attack public institutions.
It's the second state of emergency to be declared in the twin-island republic in a matter of months. Last December, authorities took similar action citing concerns about gang violence. That state of emergency lasted until mid-April.
Police said that smuggled cell phones enabled those involved in the plot to exchange encrypted messages and communicate. Months of intelligence gathering led investigators to believe the targets included senior police officers, members of the judiciary and employees at the state prosecution office, police said.
'They were planning, actively so, to carry out assassinations, robberies, and kidnappings.' Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro said at a news conference. Police described those involved as 'a coordinated and highly dangerous criminal network.'
Guevarro said the intelligence report prompted him to recommend that newly elected Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar declare the emergency, noting there were no particular threats to any politicians.
Gang leaders who were housed in a maximum-security prison in east Trinidad — where illegal possession of cellphones and other communication devices has long been a problem — have been relocated to an unidentified facility, he said, without providing any details.
'We have seen recent acts of kidnapping and homicides being perpetrated against our citizenry that we have been able to trace back to this organized crime syndicate,' Guevarro said.
Under the state of emergency, police can conduct searches and make arrests without a warrant. A curfew has not been put into effect.
Last year, the country of more than 1.4 million people reported 624 killings, its deadliest on record, according to police data. As of July 17, police said the number of killings this year stood at 214, a decline compared to 325 killings in the same period last year.

Florida man arrested after beating up fellow golfer for playing too slow: cops

A golfer in Florida is accused of attacking a fellow player for playing too slow and now faces charges over the alleged assault. Jason Hughes was arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated battery causing bodily harm, according to Fox 35. The incident happened in June at a golf course in Kissimmee, Florida, according to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office. Hughes later told deputies that he was upset with the pace of the victim's play. The man said he and Hughes exchanged words on the course. The victim was playing with a friend in front of Hughes, who told them more than once to hurry up, according to the report. Many slower golfers will let those playing faster move ahead of them at a hole. Hughes got angry when he saw the victim talking to his friend on the green of a hole, according to the report. That is when Hughes allegedly attacked and started to punch the victim in the face. Witnesses broke up the fight and Hughes and his partner fled the scene before authorities arrived, according to the report. The victim was bleeding and bruised when police arrived. He later went to the hospital with a friend. Authorities tracked down Hughes through the credit card he used to pay for his tee time, according to Fox 35. Hughes was in court Friday and given a $2,500 bond. As part of his bail conditions, he is not allowed to play golf on a public course.

Man convicted in 2023 fatal shooting of 13-year-old boy in Gary, Indiana

A man was convicted in the 2023 fatal shooting of a teenage boy in Gary, Indiana. The Gary Police Department announced that 19-year-old Dahvee Brunson was found guilty in the Feb. 15, 2023, killing of 13-year-old Orie Dodson. On that day, officers were called for a well-being check in the 1300 block of Lincoln Street, after a person was found lying face-down in front of a church. That's where they found Dodson, who was unresponsive, with apparent gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. It was later determined that the shooting stemmed from what Dodson's mother said was a situation that began on social media. In addition to the murder conviction, Brunson was also convicted of a criminal gang enhancement and a firearm enhancement. Brunson remains at the Lake County Jail. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 26. The video above is from a previous report.
