Northam heads to Tamworth primed to snap run of near misses

A leading Scone stable is primed to bookend Monday's Tamworth meeting, and snap a recent run of narrow 'bridesmaid' finishes.
Rodney Northam takes a strong team up the freeway from Scone for an open meeting on an improving and drying track, with his first and last well placed to take him back into the winner's stall.
Opening the assault is progressive three-year-old Miss You So, which looks primed to peak third-up in a Maiden Plate over 1600m to open the card.
A tough son of dual Cox Plate winner So You Think, Miss You So has done his best work late in two runs back from a spell over shorter trips.
Then in the final race – Benchmark 58 Handicap over 1000m – one of the more emerging sprinters around the Hunter and New England regions shoots for a third straight win.
This One Time, a progressive filly by Alabama Express, has won her last two in dominant fashion from just off the speed, and gets a firming track to suit.
The Northam yard also saddles up a couple of solid chances through the middle of the meeting.
Lightly raced See You Then resumes from the inside draw in a Maiden Plate over 1000m, while improving mare Great Point is a leading chance third-up in a Benchmark 58 Hcp over 1400m.
The stable has been beaten by very small margins in four of its last five starts, including two in Saturday Class 3 Highway company.

Racing Victoria delays decision on 2026 Cox Plate host

Racing Victoria has pushed back discussions on 2026 Cox Plate hosting rights to early next month. Flemington and Caulfield stay in contention for the historic schedule, a temporary relocation of Australia's best race during The Valley redevelopment set to start after the Cox Plate this year. The RV board met on Tuesday but deferred the 2026 Cox Plate agenda item as metropolitan clubs involved iron out conditions for the transferred fixture. Sources not authorised to speak publicly said Cox Plate rights remained a work in progress. A Cox Plate at Flemington next year could deliver a record 60,000-strong crowd for the prestigious $5m weight-for-age Group 1 and double as a blockbuster start to the Melbourne Cup carnival. Legendary mare Winx drew a record Valley crowd of 38,035 in 2018 for her unprecedented fourth-straight Cox Plate success. The Melbourne Cup carnival has enjoyed a recent spike in crowds, with 285,675 through the gate last year at Flemington for the biggest combined four-day attendance since 2018. Melbourne Cup Day (91,168) and Victoria Derby Day (81,612) led the way, from Champions Stakes Day (62,022) and Oaks Day (50,873). Victoria Racing Club has crowd ambitions of 60,000-plus for the Cox Plate, should Flemington secure the 2026 rights. While unable to compete on crowd and wagering fronts, Melbourne Racing Club could offer a like-for-like Cox Plate spectacle at Caulfield with its boutique atmosphere and tight-turning circuit. Moonee Valley Racing Club chairman Adam Lennen endorsed the Cox Plate negotiations. 'We're close but not there yet,' Lennen said. The MVRC has awarded a circa $70m contract for civil and infrastructure works for the new Moonee Valley Racecourse precinct to Symal Group. The scope of work includes bulk earthworks, full track reconstruction, new racing infrastructure, upgraded underpasses, retaining walls and the installation of new track lighting. The MVRC has held early talks with stakeholders, including the AFL, around future infield uses but Lennen said racecourse redevelopment, including grandstand and events centre, is the priority. The Valley infield had been linked as potential base for AFL umpires. The AFL on Tuesday confirmed the purchase of Waverley Park and ambitions for the historic venue to house its talent pathways programs, community footy and umpire development. The Valley infield remains in play as a potential boutique AFLW venue.

Racing Victoria finalises Spring Carnival vet rules for international competitors

Racing Victoria has slightly eased veterinary scanning requirements for international horses travelling to compete in races other than the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup. RV introduced tough veterinary protocols in 2021 after a review of a series of equine welfare issues in the Melbourne Cup. The measures have attracted criticism from several quarters, but RV noted the measures have ensured the last four Spring Racing Carnivals have been run without equine fatalities. Requirements for horses competing in the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup remain largely unchanged but other competitors, both visiting or on one-way tickets, will only need to undergo one pre-travel CT scan. Those horses will also no longer need further CT scans before every start in Australia. For overseas horses competing in Victoria and local horses in the Melbourne Cup, RV has provided a second opportunity for scans should a mandatory CT scan identify a potential leg issue. A follow-up Positron Emission Tomography (PET), which analyses bone or tissue lesions at a molecular level, will be available – time permitting – at the University of Melbourne Equine Centre at Werribee. PET is a faster procedure, requiring less sedation than the previously used scintigraphy and produces enhanced 3D imagery compared to 2D RV has now decreed that all final Melbourne Cup vet inspections for acceptors must be conducted in Victoria and will no longer be allowed to be done interstate. RV has also improved its communication processes around the veterinary protocols, developing an online resource to explain the rules to interested parties and providing feedback directly to managing owners, as well as trainers, about horses deemed unsuitable to race. 'After each Carnival the protocols are evaluated to consider their application, ongoing suitability and any potential enhancements based on stakeholder feedback, our learnings, data and new technology,' RV chief executive Aaron Morrison said. 'What remains unchanged is that every international horse will have to pass a CT scan to compete here, however we're taking a more pragmatic approach with the volume of scans for those horses not entered in the Cups or Cox Plate. 'Importantly, all other veterinary oversight of the international horses remains in place to monitor them during the Spring Racing Carnival. 'Our goal remains to deliver world class racing, while ensuring the safety of horses and riders. 'We look forward to working with international and local connections to maintain the recent positive trend.' The RV scanning requirements hit the headlines in April when David Hayes, trainer of sprinting superstar Ka Ying Rising, said it was 'madness' that the horse would need to undergo a compulsory CT scan in order to run at the Flemington carnival even if he pulled up well after the $20m The Everest at Randwick. The rule saw Hayes declare the sprint gun would contest the Russell Balding Stakes after The Everest instead of venturing to Melbourne for the Champions Sprint during Melbourne Cup week.

Singleton stable set for Lovely trip away to Narromine

A trip away and return to the flying short course are set to pay dividends for a tough Scone filly at today's Narromine meeting. And punters have seemingly been given a decisive leg-up from the Scott Singleton stable, with front-running Too Darn Lovely by-passing a home meeting on the same day to zero in on a weaker target in the central west. Dropping back from a higher-graded race at Muswellbrook over 1000m three weeks ago when she faded after leading, Too Darn Lovely reloads in a Benchmark 58 Handicap over the 800m scamper course on a tighter and more advantageous track for on-speed sprinters. The start before in a better BM 58 at Quirindi (1000m), Too Darn Lovely ran a quick time in beating a handy sprint field. She again draws to control the race under regular apprentice Leeshelle Small, and back on her preferred firmer ground, looks set to take her strike rate to five wins from 14 starts. A speedy daughter of fashionable sire Too Darn Hot, Too Darn Lovely could be aimed at a more challenging provincial sprint, or even a Saturday Highway if she takes care of this moderate field. While Singleton has accepted for seven runners at the Scone meeting, Thor's Lightning, second-up in a Maiden Plate over 1300m, is his only other runner at Narromine. The meeting, though, is set to be dominated by Dubbo stables. Loading The Clint Lundholm yard, among its better chances, will run exciting debutant filly Miss Rapide in a Maiden Plate over 800m, along with resuming My Boy Scout in a Maiden Handicap (1100m), and promising filly Matilda Of Tuscany shooting for back-to-back wins after a dominant Maiden breakthrough at Warren.
