Defence grills police over missing entries in Jayden-Lee Meek murder investigation

The attorney for murder-accused Tiffany Meek attempted to poke holes in the State's case during the fourth day of her bail application in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court.
Meek, 31, from Fleurhof, is accused of killing her 11-year-old son Jayden-Lee Meek.
She also faces charges of crimen injuria, attempting to defeat or obstruct the course of justice, and defeating or obstructing the administration of justice.
Meek was arrested on July 11 at her mother's home.
Her son was reported missing on May 13, and his body was found a few hours later near his home.
Her defence lawyer, Noven Naidoo, started his cross-examination of the investigating officer.
Naidoo asked the policeman about Jayden's clothing during his cross-examination, citing that the teacher, Tiffany, and the security gave conflicting statements of what Jayden had been wearing the day he disappeared.

'My client will state that she helped him get dressed that morning, and he was wearing grey long pants, a white shirt, a tie, and black takkies on the day,' Naidoo submitted.
The police sergeant said he could not really comment on what the child was wearing as those details were given to police by people who had seen Jayden-Lee on the day.
The court was also given copies of the complex's occurrence book (OB) of May 13 and May 14.
The copies before the court showed that an entry of Jayden-Lee's disappearance was only entered after 8pm, by the nightshift guard.
Naidoo directed the police sergeant's attention to missing entries in the book.
'The accused will state she went to the security guard (day shift), and an entry was made in the OB. She gave him her phone number. This was after 5pm. She said she was going to walk to the shop, and if Jayden comes back, he must contact her telephonically,' Naidoo submitted.
'There is no record of this in the OB,' the investigating officer responded.
Naidoo continued to grill the police sergeant about an alleged missing page in the book and claimed that on May 14, the day that Jayden-Lee's body was discovered, Meek and her family wanted to take a photo of the OB but saw the missing page.
The investigating officer admitted he had failed to certify the copies before court, stating the volume of work made him overlook this.
He was also grilled on the nationality of the security guards. When he told Naidoo the guards were Congolese nationals, he was asked if he knew their immigration status.
'No, I do not. I work for the SAPS,' the police sergeant responded.
The matter continues.

It is reported that on Wednesday, police followed a credible lead which led to the discovery of the bodies of the mother and her daughter. The duo was remanded in custody, and the matter was postponed to 12 August for further investigation. Murder of court officials: Parliament expresses grave concern, seeks to engage NPA

Image: Facebook Chairperson of Parliament's portfolio committee on justice and constitutional development, Xola Nqola, has expressed outrage at the cold-blooded murder of public prosecutor Tracy Brown in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape. IOL reported on Friday that the murder of the female public prosecutor in front of her child and partner has been described as an attack on the rule of law. Tracy Brown, a regional court prosecutor, was shot and killed in front of her house at Lotton Street, Young Park in Gqeberha on Thursday after four men alighted from a white Polo vehicle and fired multiple shots at her vehicle. Nqola said protectors of the justice system in South Africa are not safe. 'This is indeed a tragedy where the protectors of our criminal justice system are not safe anymore. This is unacceptable and no stone should be left unturned to bring the culprits to book,' he said. According to reports, Brown was ambushed and shot multiple times by four armed assailants while sitting in her car, in full view of her partner and child. 'The brutal nature of this assassination-style killing is deeply disturbing and represents a direct attack on the justice system and those who serve it with dedication and courage,' he said. This incident follows the tragic murder of Elona Sombulula, a court official at the Engcobo Magistrate's Court, in April. The parliamentary committee is 'gravely concerned' by what appears to be a pattern of targeted violence against officials within the justice sector. 'The murder of Ms Brown is not only a devastating loss to her family and colleagues, but an attack on the rule of law in South Africa. Prosecutors serve at the forefront of our fight against crime and corruption. When they are targeted, it threatens the foundations of our constitutional democracy. 'The committee sends its heartfelt condolences to Ms Brown's loved ones and colleagues during this painful time. The committee also calls on law enforcement agencies to prioritise the investigation and ensure that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and face the full might of the law.' Nqola said the portfolio committee will engage with the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on urgent measures to enhance the safety and security of prosecutors and court officials across the country.

Religious leader's murder shocks Benoni community
A lone brightly coloured floral arrangement stands next to the curb in Caledon Street in Actonville, in Benoni, Ekurhuleni – it serves as a stark reminder of where guru Roy Naidoo (66) was murdered on Wednesday. Steeling herself, one of Naidoo's sisters, Queenie, places a fresh rose next to the bouquet, paying her respects to a man she said served his community until his final moments. Benoni City Times reports that Anton Koen of NoJack Vehicle Tracking said private security, local SAPS, as well as members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) responded to the incident, which he described as gruesome. Paul Apicella, from the neighbouring Paarl Street, said that the suspect had been walking the streets that morning, wielding what he described as a panga. 'The man was swinging the weapon around, screaming and ranting,' said Apicella. 'Pedestrians could be heard screaming and running in all directions. It was chaos, people locked themselves in their homes out of fear.' Shanwill da Costa, a local youth who had been living under the mentorship of the Tamil priest for the past four years, said that at about 13:30, Naidoo approached his assailant to calm the situation. 'Uncle Roy was standing in the road next to him, speaking in his characteristic calm manner. It seemed like the situation was simmering down,' said Da Costa. 'The suspect started swinging the weapon, and the next minute, Uncle Roy was on the ground. I tried to help, but could not get close enough. I felt incredibly helpless.' Koen confirmed that after the incident, the suspect fled into his home, barricading himself inside. 'Following a brief exchange of fire, SAPS members tactically breached the property,' he said. 'The man was found on his bed with a gunshot wound. He was arrested and taken to a local hospital for treatment.' Sitting in Naidoo's living room, Queenie said that her brother's home and Ashram (temple) have, for more than two decades, served as a beacon of hope for the community. 'Roy has served as a spiritual leader for 45 years, assisting weary souls with guidance and care,' she said. 'Despite not being in good health, he sourced food donations from local businesses to provide those in need with a weekly meal and a diligently packed food hamper. His life was dedicated to caring for everyone regardless of faith and culture.' She said that Roy's two children, as well as his surviving five siblings, are grappling to come to terms with his death. 'It would have been easier to accept his physical departure if it were due to natural causes,' she said. 'This burden is too heavy to carry. We leave Roy's attacker in the hands of God, for only He can judge.' A funeral service will be held at Naidoo's Caledon Street home tomorrow (August 2).
