Honda EV O Electric Motorcycle Launched In China; Unlikely To Be Launched In India

NDTV30-05-2025
Honda recently took the wraps off its first ever electric motorcycle and has launched the same in China. The Honda EV O was designed and developed with Guangzhou, Honda's Chinese partner, under the brand name Wuyang-Honda. The EV O is offered in two variants - one with 4.1 kWh dual-battery pack and the other with a 6.2 kWh triple-battery pack. The former has a claimed range of 120 km and the latter has a range of 170 km. Prices for the EV O start at 29,999 yuan (Rs. 3.56 lakh) and go up to 36,999 yuan (Rs. 4.4 lakh), based on current exchange rates.
The 4.1 kWh variant weighs 143 kg and requires approximately 1.5 hours for a full charge with a home-charger and 1 hour with a fast-charger. It has a top speed of 110 kmph. In contrast, the 6.2 kWh version tips the scales at 156 kg and extends the charging time to around 2.5 hours. Both models get the same electric motor which has a peak power output 15.3 kW. Built around a forged aluminium chassis, the Honda EV O features a distinctive 16-inch front and 14-inch rear wheel setup. Braking duties are handled by single disc brakes at both ends and dual-channel ABS is standard.
In terms of technology, the EV O gets dual dash cam offering. The base 4.1 kWh variant includes a front-facing camera, while the 6.2 kWh model adds a rear dash cam for comprehensive video recording. Both trims come equipped with twin seven-inch TFT displays, offering access to features such as navigation, riding mode selection, music control, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. There are three riding modes on offer too - Eco, Normal, Sport.
The design on the Honda EV O is that of a retro café racer and the battery pack in neatly integrated into the Aluminium chassis. Other design highlights include a round LED headlight, clip-on handlebar, single-piece seat and bar-end mirrors, details that you would see on a modern classic motorcycle.
The fact that Honda built this motorcycle with a Chinese partner means that it is unlikely to be launched in India. It could have been a good alternative to the Ultraviolette F77.

Honda eyes 30% share in Indian two-wheeler market, sees potential to grow sales among women

Japanese auto major Honda is targeting a 30 per cent share in the Indian two-wheeler market by 2030, as it chases the goal to achieve half of global two-wheeler sales in the long term, according to a top official of the company's arm in India. The company's arm, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), sees huge potential to grow sales among female customers, who currently account for just about 10 % of the overall industry sales, HMSI President Tsutsumu Otani told PTI in an interview. He also said that while the company sees a shift from internal combustion engine ( ICE ) to electric vehicles in the two-wheeler segment in the long term, bottlenecks around charging infrastructure and electricity supplies are major impediments at present. "Considering the Indian market size, we want to achieve 30 per cent share in India by 2030," Otani said when asked about the significance of the Indian market in Honda's overall long-term goal to garner 50 per cent of global two-wheeler sales. Currently, he said HMSI has a 27 per cent market share in the Indian market. Otani said that already in the ASEAN region, Honda has over 80 per cent market share. Earlier in January this year, Honda Motor Co announced that the industry-wide global motorcycle (two-wheeler) sales, currently at a scale of 50 million units, are projected to grow to 60 million units by 2030, including electric vehicles. The company has set "a long-term target" for itself to capture a 50 per cent share of the global motorcycle market, including electric motorcycles. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the total two-wheeler retail sales in India stood at 1,88,77,812 units in FY25 compared to 1,75,27,115 units in FY24. HMSI's retail sales in FY25 were 47,89,283 units against 40,93,895 units in FY24. It was the number two player after Hero MotoCorp, which clocked 54,45,251 units in FY25 and 53,97,315 units in FY24. Otani noted that Honda sees huge potential to tap female customers to increase its two-wheeler sales in India with increasing women empowerment and many of them entering the workforce. "In India, the overall two-wheeler usage is mostly male, with 90 %, and females just around 10 per cent. It means the potential for two-wheeler sales to grow among the female customers is huge," he said. When asked about the company's product pipeline programme for the Indian market to achieve the 2030 target, Otani declined to comment, but asserted that, being a global company, Honda has a range of products in its portfolio, which can be considered for India. Otani said the company will consider a wide range of technologies, including EVs and flex fuels, for the Indian market, considering the different consumer demands in different parts of the country. Honda had stated that it plans to introduce 30 electric models globally by 2030 to achieve the goal of increasing its global annual sales of electric motorcycle models to 4 million units by 2030. The company had also said it would strive to capture the largest market share in the electric two-wheeler segment in India, where it will begin operating a dedicated electric two-wheeler production plant in 2028. When asked if the company has finalised the location of the EV-only plant and investments for it, Otani said it has not been decided as yet. He said in the long term, the shift from ICE to electric vehicles will happen in India, but at present, the bottlenecks around charging infrastructure and electricity supplies are major impediments.

Local rare-earth production to take time, govt support needed for EV sector: Kinetic Green CEO

Sulajja Firodia Motwani, Founder and CEO of Kinetic Green , has called for government intervention in the rare-earth materials issue, stating that while the Indian electric vehicle (EV) sector has managed to cope in the short term, it will face significant challenges ahead, as "it's not easy to change your product design and supply chain." Kinetic Green founder emphasised that it could take at least two to three years for the players in the automobile sector to localise the supply chain or adopt alternative technologies. "It will impact the industry if it's not solved because it's not easy to change your product design and supply chain. The EV sector is scrambling somehow to manage for the short run. But I think there has to be a government-to-government solution very soon in the medium term. Because it will take two to three years to try to localise the supply chain or change the technology altogether. So I think it's important that this is resolved," Sulajja Firodia Motwsaid during the unveiling event of the company's electric Luxury Golf & Lifestyle Cart in partnership with Tonino Lamborghini SpA of Italy. She further added, "We faced a similar situation in COVID on semiconductors; if you remember, the government did follow through and resolve it. I'm hopeful that something will emerge from this." She added that until the issue is solved, the company is working on developing alternative technologies to mitigate the adverse impact of such restrictions arising from global geopolitical moves. "But in the meantime, we are finding alternatives so that the business can continue, but it's not ideal to do that, and also maybe not everybody can. So it (restrictions on rare-earth material by China) will impact the sector," she added. The central government has earmarked ₹1,345 crore to incentivise rare earth magnets production in India. For context, early this April, China announced a decision to implement export controls on certain rare earth-related items, pushing a supply shortage across the world, including India. Meanwhile, India is in touch with the Chinese side, seeking predictability in the supply of rare earth metals -- which had been put under the export controls regime by the Xi administration. China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing - commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity - has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy China, there are only a few alternative suppliers of critical minerals. The Union Cabinet in January 2025 approved the launch of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) with an expenditure of Rs 16,300 crore and an expected investment of Rs 18,000 crore by Public Sector Undertakings. Recently, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy said the central government is actively encouraging private companies to mine and explore critical minerals overseas and bring them back into the country to serve the needs of the domestic industry. Speaking on the incentives to the industry, Motwani said, "The government has to continue supporting the adoption of EVs. Once we come to, today we are at about 7-8 per cent EV. Once we come to 25-30 per cent EV, then we'll have critical mass on supply chain, on scale, and on ecosystem. "We have begun well, but we are far from done. The government must continue supporting the adoption of electric vehicles," she added. She further noted the resistance from traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) players who have vested interests in maintaining the status quo. "There is a large counterforce from existing ICE manufacturers who naturally want to protect their investments and may not wish to see EVs succeed. However, it's encouraging that the government remains focused. Schemes like EMPS and the PM-eBus Sewa, lower GST rates, ecosystem support, and a strong Make-in-India push should continue to drive demand and adoption," Kinetic Green founder asserted.
