King appoints Wan Ahmad Farid as new Chief Justice of Malaysia
The 62-year-old took his oath of office and loyalty at the Small Throne Room, marking the beginning of his tenure as the nation's top judicial officer.
Wan Ahmad Farid, previously a Court of Appeal judge, also received his instrument of appointment as a Federal Court Judge.
The event was attended by key government figures, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, as well as Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
The ceremony also saw the appointment of Datuk Abu Bakar Jais as President of the Court of Appeal and Datuk Azizah Nawawi as Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak. Additionally, eight Court of Appeal Judges and 14 High Court Judges were sworn in.
Wan Ahmad Farid succeeds Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who retired on July 2.
His appointment follows Clause (1) of Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, with the King's consent based on the Prime Minister's advice and consultation with the Conference of Rulers.
With a distinguished legal career spanning decades, Wan Ahmad Farid holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of West London and a Certificate in Legal Practice from Universiti Malaya.
He began his career as an advocate and solicitor in Kuala Terengganu before transitioning into public service, including roles as political secretary to former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Deputy Home Minister. - Bernama

PUTRAJAYA, July 28 — Federal Court judge Datuk Abu Bakar Jais was sworn in today as the President of the Court of Appeal (PCA), while Court of Appeal judge Datuk Azizah Nawawi became the first woman to become the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak (CJSS). The two took their oath of office and loyalty during a ceremony at the Palace of Justice here. Earlier in the morning, Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh was appointed and sworn in as the Chief Justice (CJ) of Malaysia at Istana Negara. Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim will continue on as Chief Judge of Malaya until her retirement in November; she was elevated to the judiciary's third-highest position last November. With these appointments, all four of Malaysia's top judicial positions have now been filled following the retirement of the previous CJ, PCA and CJSS earlier this month. This afternoon, six individuals were appointed as Court of Appeal judges, namely Shahnaz Sulaiman, Datin Evrol Mariette Peters, Ong Chee Kwan, Datuk Mohd Radzi Abdul Hamid, Leonard David Shim, and Nadzarin Wok Nordin. Fourteen judicial commissioners were also elevated to High Court judges today, including Maslinda @ Linda Mohd Ainal, Datuk Faridz Gohim Abdullah, Choong Yeow Choy, Saiful Azian Mokhtar, Evawani Farisyta Mohamad and Indra Nehru Savandiah. Others appointed as High Court judges are Sumathi Murugiah, Moses Susayan, Kan Weng Hin, Wendy Ooi Su Ghee, Mohd Rosli Yusoff, Hazlina Hussain, Roszianayati Ahmad and Mohamad Haldar Abdul Aziz. Thailand-Cambodia Peace Talks Begin In Putrajaya Amid Rising Border Tensions
WORLD PUTRAJAYA, July 28 (Bernama) -- The special meeting between Thailand and Cambodia, aimed at securing an immediate ceasefire and halting hostilities along the disputed border, began in Putrajaya on Monday. The special meeting, brokered by Malaysia and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his capacity as the current ASEAN Chair, is being held to de-escalate rising tensions and restore stability along the conflict-hit border areas. Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai arrived at Seri Perdana, the venue of the meeting, which is the official residence of the Malaysian prime minister, at about 2.51 pm followed shortly after by Cambodian leader Hun Manet. They were welcomed by Anwar. Also attending the meeting were US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard Kagan and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing, who are participating as co-facilitators. Last Friday, Anwar had called Phumtham and Manet separately, appealing for both leaders to seek an immediate ceasefire and return to dialogue to resolve their dispute. Anwar had said that Malaysia stands ready to assist and facilitate the process in the spirit of ASEAN unity and shared responsibility. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic rows over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their shared border. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been simmering since May 28 following a skirmish between their troops near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier.

Formerly a Court of Appeal Judge, Wan Ahmad Farid was also granted the Instrument of Appointment as a Federal Court Judge.
