Broad Arrow Auctions, a Hagerty (NYSE: HGTY) company, is celebrating the success of its first European sale as the official auction partner of BMW AG after presenting over 70 of the world's finest cars, boats and motorcycles at the prestigious Concorso d'Eleganza Villa D'Este.
Two vibrant sales, held on Saturday May 24th and Sunday May 25th in the Rotunda at Villa Erba, saw packed sales rooms and an atmosphere charged with excitement. Both auctions, also watched live by over 8,000 viewers on the Broad Arrow YouTube channel, achieved €31,172,625 in total sales, with 78 percent of all lots sold. Note, these figures include three lots sold within hours of the live auction ending.
'Our Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este auction has been a resounding success,' says Joe Twyman, VP of Sales for Broad Arrow's EMEA Region. 'The opportunity to present such a spectacular collection of the world's most desirable cars on the shores of Lake Como at the world famous Concorso was a great way to launch our first European sale.'
Star of the Sunday sale was a 1948 Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa, quite possibly the most original early Ferrari extant, which sold for an auction record price of €7,543,750. Never before offered publicly for sale, it is one of two 166 Spyder Corsa models commissioned by one of Ferrari's earliest customers. It has received awards at multiple prestigious shows and has competed in some of the greatest events, including the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio. The room was captivated by fast and competitive telephone bidding as two potential buyers fought for the chance to own this very special piece of Ferrari history.
The last of just 33 Motto-bodied Siata 208S Spiders, from 1954, was another highlight, with strong interest from bidders attracted by its beautiful style and remarkable provenance to achieve a sale price of €1,750,000.
Broad Arrow also presented a number of very special modern classic cars, including a spectacular 2003 Honda NSX-R. With just 15,800 kilometres, the Championship White, lightweight supercar attracted attention from around the world with bidders from the UK, Australia, Argentina, South Africa, and the US competing to own this rare supercar. Another electrifying sale saw a final bid duel lead to a world auction record-winning bid of €934,375.
Other modern classic highlights saw an outstanding 1989 Ferrari F40 Competizione attract a winning bid of €2,312,500 and a a 2023 Ford GT sell for €613,750.
To further demonstrate the broad range of enthusiast vehicles offered, a 1990 Ducati 851 F90 Corsa, owned by John Surtees but never ridden, tempted many bidders and sold for €81,250.
Broad Arrow also held a dedicated BMW-only sale, featuring cars from private collectors, on Saturday evening which produced equally impressive results. Featuring some of the most highly collectible models from the German marque, hosts of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, an outrageously beautiful 1980 BMW M1, enhanced to Procar specification by BMW Motorsport, took the spotlight. Causing a stir in the sale room it sold for an impressive €602,500.
'Not only did we achieve remarkable sales for some of the world's most collectible models, but collectors were clearly excited by the carefully curated selection of cars we presented,' says Twyman. 'We are extremely proud to have achieved such strong results, and a number of auction record sale prices, at our first European auction, and I now look forward to expanding Broad Arrow's European sale calendar throughout 2025.'
Kenneth Ahn, President of Broad Arrow, added, "First and foremost, thank you to everyone for the tremendous interest and support for our very first auction in Europe, held on the stunning shores of Lake Como. By all accounts, it was an incredible success. We're also deeply grateful to our wonderful partner, BMW AG, and the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. We look forward to welcoming even more car enthusiasts and industry friends as we continue to grow our presence in Europe."

Motor racing-Former Ferrari boss Montezemolo becomes a McLaren Group director

By Alan Baldwin LONDON (Reuters) -Former Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo has joined the board of historic rival McLaren, a move that would have been unimaginable not so long ago. A filing with Companies House by Abu Dhabi-owned McLaren Group Holdings, which controls Woking-based sportscar maker McLaren Automotive, registered Montezemolo as a director on June 27. The 77-year-old Italian joined Ferrari in 1973 as founder Enzo Ferrari's assistant and became team manager in 1974, a year before the late Austrian triple champion Niki Lauda secured his first title. He also presided over the Formula One team during a golden era when Michael Schumacher won five of his career seven titles between 2000-2004 and served as chairman of both Ferrari and parent FIAT. McLaren and Ferrari, the two oldest and most successful teams in Formula One history, have been rivals for decades and were involved in a notorious 'Spygate' scandal that erupted in 2007. British-based McLaren were stripped of all their championship points and fined a record $100 million over a dossier of stolen Ferrari technical documents found in the possession of McLaren's chief designer. Both Ferrari and McLaren are under different management now, with Montezemolo resigning his roles at the Italian luxury sportscar maker in 2014 and focusing on other business interests. CYVN, majority-owned by the government of Abu Dhabi, created McLaren Group Holdings in April after completing its acquisition of McLaren Automotive. The group includes a non-controlling stake in McLaren Racing, the Formula One team whose majority shareholder is Bahrain's Mumtalakat and which operates completely independently. Paul Walsh, executive chairman of McLaren Racing, is also one of the nine directors of McLaren Group Holdings, while McLaren team principal Andrea Stella previously worked for Ferrari. McLaren are the reigning Formula One constructors' world champions while Ferrari last won a title in 2008. Seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton, who took his first title for McLaren in 2008, is now driving for Ferrari. News of Montezemolo's new role was greeted with some amazement in Italy. "Montezemolo-McLaren: What a slap in the face to Ferrari," said sports newspaper Tuttosport in a headline. ANSA news agency quoted Montezemolo as saying his heart "is and always will be red" and his new role was on the automotive side and did not involve Formula One.

How China could shut down auto factories around the world

China's dominance of the global supply chain is starting to hurt automakers. On April 4, the country cut off exports of a class of minerals called "heavy rare earth elements," and it sent the global auto industry into a panic. Rare earths are a class of 17 elements that have become indispensable in all kinds of applications — everything from fighter jets and submarines, to smartphones and appliances. You can even find them in sports equipment, like tennis rackets and baseball bats. They are also, of course, essential to the modern automobile. Gas burning cars use them to filter pollution through the vehicle's catalytic converter. Electric vehicles use them in motors and batteries. "Rare earths are really critical, and not just for electric vehicles," said Gracelin Baskaran, director of the Critical Minerals Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "They are in your seat belt, your steering wheels, various parts of your electrical components. You are not going to manufacture a car without rare earths." Rare earths are split into further categories, based on their atomic weight. Light rare earths are easier to source. It's the medium and heavy ones that China has totally monopolized. China controls about 70% of the world's rare earth mines. But where it really dominates is in processing. The name "rare earth elements" is a bit misleading — the elements themselves are not that rare in nature. What makes them "rare" is the complex and difficult process of separating them from the rock they are embedded in, and from each other. China controls about 90% of the world's rare earth processing, and has a total monopoly on the processing of heavy rare earths. Since at least 2023, China has been tightening its grip on several of the key critical minerals it provides for the world, Baskaran said. Still, the April 4 export restrictions shocked the automotive world. "It came out of nowhere," said Dan Hearsch, managing director at AlixPartners. "Nobody had any time to react to it. I mean, within a matter of weeks, all of the material in the pipeline was out." European automakers shut down factories. Ford had to idle production of its popular Explorer SUV. This month, China started permitting some access to companies that supply parts to some automakers. And this week the Trump administration said it had reached a deal to expedite rare earth and magnet shipments to the U.S. Still it is unclear how durable these deals will be. "We're not out of the woods yet," Baskaran said. "There is a lot of volatility in the U.S.-China relationship in between tariffs and mineral restrictions. We've seen China ramp up restrictions over two years. Rare earths are just the newest one." There are longer-term solutions if China cuts off access again: recycling, developing other sources and innovation, for example. This crisis may even spur the industry to take action that reduces dependence on China. But this rare earths crisis is just the latest in a series of supply disruptions over the last several years. Hearsch said it will likely get worse. "Today it's rare earths," Hearsch said. "But tomorrow it can and will be something else that maybe we're not thinking about, that maybe isn't even all that valuable and suddenly will be." Watch the video to learn more
