BBC Two's Chess Masters: The Endgame divides opinions as winner is crowned
Viewer numbers, as supplied by Broadcast, peaked in the first week at 890,000, then gradually dipped to a low of 535,000 on Easter Monday before rebounding to 655,000, a 5.5% share of the viewing audience, for the final week.
However, Charlie Bunce, director of programmes for the series production company Curve Media, said in an email to chess.com that the first episode had attracted just under 1.2m viewers, describing that as 'a great success', and that in the rest of the series the programme had 'held its share'. Chess.com has a full pictorial report on the series.
The grandmaster presenter, David Howell, created innovative challenges for contestants, including pawn races, memory tests set by his friend Magnus Carlsen, puzzles involving checkmates in one, two, three, four and five moves, and mini-simultaneous exhibitions, all part of the elimination process to produce a single winner.
English Chess Federation sources believe that the decision whether to commission a second series is in the balance. BBC policy is often to allow a new show a couple of series to find its target audience.
The Richie v Thalia final was decided when the older player, a piece up, chose 1 Qf2? in the diagram, got into time trouble, and was beaten.
There is now an entire 32-page thread on the English Chess Forum about Chess Masters, with its detractors complaining about excessive hype by Anthony Moturin and the difficulty of following the puzzle solutions, while its advocates praise the soft approach needed to bring new players to the game.

Following Freestyle successes for Carlsen, the world No 1, and setbacks for the Indians led by the 18-year-old world champion, Gukesh Dommaraju, the next major tests in classical chess are approaching.
On Wednesday the Superbet Chess Classic Romania starts in Bucharest, with world top 11 players Gukesh, Fabiano Caruana, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, Alireza Firouzja and Wesley So all in action.
Bucharest will be followed by Norway Chess at Stavanger, starting on 26 May, where the six competitors in a double-round all-play-all are Carlsen (Norway), Hikaru Nakamura and Caruana (US), Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi (India) and Wei Yi (China).

Each will have an individual motivation. Carlsen will want to show continued classical supremacy, a strong Nakamura result will provide impetus for him to qualify for the 2026 Candidates, Gukesh will need to prove that he really deserves his world crown, Caruana will aim to restore his previous No 2 status, while Erigaisi and Yi will try to confirm their places among the super-elite.
Meanwhile, April has been a good month for England's best players. Nikita Vitiugov, the former Russian who is now England No 1, scored 2.5/3 in the competitive German Bundesliga. Shreyas Royal, 16, England's youngest grandmaster, achieved solid 2500+ performances at Reykjavik, Iceland, and Menorca, Spain, while Supratit Banerjee, 11, surpassed a 2300 rating and so qualified for the Fide Master title.
At home, GM Peter Wells won the English Senior 50+ championship while WIM Natasha Regan captured the women's crown. Paul Townsend and WGM Sheila Jackson took the 65+ titles.

‘Why are we only seeing this?' – Fans left fuming at bungling BBC's broadcast of Wimbledon
FANS fumed at the bungling BBC's Wimbledon broadcast - which cut away from showing the tennis for more than THREE MINUTES. Dan Evans took on Novak Djokovic on Centre Court in round two. 7 7 7 The Brit served to stay in the set at 5-1 down. But after missing his first serve on the opening point, the TV cameras bizarrely cut away. For about one minute, an angle thought to be from the BBC studio showed a chair in the foreground and a blurry image of the walkways around the All England Club. Then for nearly two-and-a-half further minutes, live footage of tennis fans enjoying the afternoon sunshine on Henman Hill filled the screen. The sound and commentary from Centre Court continued as Evans held for 5-2. And it was not until the end of the changeover - three minutes and 23 seconds after cutting away from the match - that the BBC went back to the live feed from Wimbledon's main show court. It is understood both BBC One and BBC Two were hit by the error, which was not addressed on air by the commentators. Viewers trying to watch Evans battling against Djokovic blasted the Beeb's blunder. One said: "Why are we only seeing a picture of Henman Hill rather than Centre Court?" Another wrote: "Why are we watching everyone sat on Henman Hill instead of Evans vs Djokovic?" John McEnroe interrupts brother Patrick on Wimbledon broadcast to make major personal announcement live on ESPN 7 Wimbledon 2025 LIVE - follow all the latest scores and updates from a thrilling fortnight at SW19 A third moaned: "Who is in charge of broadcasting the Championship, is it the latest trainee? Really poor." A fourth complained: "I mean the coverage has been absolutely terrible. Moving court coverage around without any reason, not showing the Brits, not saying what is on iPlayer. Now we have a fantastic showing of Henman Hill with no tennis. Just give up guys." The mistake comes two days after British tennis fans were unable to watch the start of Jack Draper's opening match of the tournament. The BBC News was on at 6pm - just as Alexander Zverev was playing a crucial tie-break on Centre Court. So BBC bosses opted to stick with the tie-break before switching over to Draper. Elsewhere, the broadcasters were mocked for their hilariously big microphone given to Iga Swiatek for her radio interview. But on a more serious note, reports this week suggest the BBC face a battle from TNT Sports and Sky Sports to retain the rights for Wimbledon beyond their current deal which runs until 2027. 7 7 7

BBC pulls more than 10 shows from schedule – and some won't return for weeks
Wimbledon and Women's Euro matches have led to schedule changes on the BBC this month, with the likes of EastEnders and the One Show among the numerous TV shows affected A number of BBC shows have been affected by a change to TV schedules this month. The broadcaster is once again providing viewers with coverage of Wimbledon, alongside airing several of this year's Women's Euro football matches, too. The tennis tournament started on Monday and is set to conclude next Sunday (July 13), with it continuing to affect the schedule until then. Meanwhile, the football championship instead kicked off yesterday and that will continue until July 27. Wimbledon coverage is alternating between BBC One and BBC Two this year. The Women's Euro is instead being split between the BBC and ITV, though the final later this month will be available to fans through both broadcasters. Last week it was announced that the One Show, which airs at 7pm on weeknights, has been dropped from the BBC's schedule for four weeks amid coverage of the two sporting championships. The show is set to return from July 28. It isn't the only show affected though. EastEnders episodes aired as double-bills on BBC Two on Monday and Tuesday this week amid Wimbledon's return. There now won't be any new episodes of the soap until next Wednesday (July 9). There is set to be further changes to EastEnders' schedule later in the month though as a result of the Women's Euros. Two episodes will air on July 15 ahead of its slot the following evening being taken up by a match. There will be no episode on July 17 either, though one will air on July 18 instead. Wimbledon has also taken over BBC One's afternoon slots. It means that Escape to the Country, Pointless, Bridge Of Lies and Garden Rescue aren't airing at the moment, with all four shows set to return to the channel on July 14. BBC Two's the Edge, Unbeatable, Richard Osman 's House Of Games and Robson Green 's Weekend Escapes are also missing from the schedule until that date. Similarly, Flog It won't air on the channel on a weekday until July 14 either. Several other shows are also missing from the schedule. Absences at the moment include Lightning, Murder, Mystery and My Family, Weatherman Walking and Hidden Treasures of the National Trust, which typically have afternoon slots. The One Show is understood to be the most affected by the schedule changes. Host Alex Jones announced that the show would be taking a month-long break at the end of the last episode, which was broadcast on Friday. She told viewers: "We are taking a bit of a break for the next four weeks and we'll be back on Monday the 28th of July. But there's plenty to enjoy like Wimbledon and the Euros." A message in the credits reminded of its return date. Wimbledon is airing today on BBC One from 2pm to 7pm. It will then continue after BBC News from 8pm until 10pm tonight. Whilst the Women's Euro match between Belgium and Italy will air on BBC Two from 4.30pm, with some occasional Wimbledon coverage on that channel today too.

The Chase star admits he was 'begged' to join rival show by BBC bosses
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info One of the stars of ITV's The Chase has admitted that he was "begged" to join another popular quiz show at a time when he'd "retired from quizzing". In a recent episode of the New Mind podcast, Shaun Wallace, otherwise known as the "Dark Destroyer" on the hugely popular quiz show The Chase, opened up about a time in his life when he "retired". Speaking to host Ella McCrystal, Shaun, who also works as a barrister, detailed how the early retirement came after his Mastermind win in 2004. He explained that after the win, there was nowhere to "go". It would be another popular show that ultimately tempted the quizzer out of retirement. Shaun reports that those involved in the show were "begging" him to make an appearance, but he turned them down three times. He suggested that the reason for this was due to his other commitments as a barrister, but the show offered him a compromise. Shaun eventually agreed to attend the audition. (Image:) Shaun said: "Yeah, well, where could I go? I've won the best quiz show probably in the world, winning Mastermind. So, I stopped quizzing, then I was asked to come out of retirement by the the Eggheads were looking for a new Egghead. "Well, they were looking for a new Egghead, and I turned them down three times, and they were begging me. They even got I think the producer of the show at the time, rang me at home, and I said: 'Look, I'm not really interested.'" He added: "And they just kept on ringing, kept on ringing. I said: 'Look, I can hardly say to a judge: 'By the way, your honour. Can I nip out and do a quiz show?' He would of told me where to get off." However, Shaun was informed that his filming would be completed on weekends, so he went along to the audition and ultimately reached the grand final. He described himself as a "gunslinger" who was asked to come out of retirement for one more "showdown". Afterwards, he "retired again" before receiving a call in 2008 asking him to join an "exciting new gameshow concept." Just one year later, in 2009, he joined The Chase, hosted by Bradley Walsh.. (Image: Dave) It follows reports that Shaun has joined another ITV show, one that's unlike anything he's appeared in previously. Speaking on X, the quizzer revealed he was joining its new reality series The Great Escapers. In the show, famous names from various backgrounds embark on a holiday as they compete to arrange the best day out. Shaun is joined on the show by fellow Chasers Mark Labbett and Jenny Ryan. The post read: "Very excited to be filming in Rhodes for a new show called 'The Great Escapers' with Mark @MarkLabbett and Jenny @jenlion. Looking forward to having a lot of fun with those two. Doing a spot of fitness in the sunshine, before we get going."
