
Google's AI drug company says human trials are ‘very close'
In an interview with Fortune on July 6, Colin Murdoch, Isomorphic Labs' president and Google DeepMind's chief business officer, shared that the company is currently gearing up to start human trials. This milestone will mark the first time that Google DeepMind's breakthrough AI drug discovery system, AlphaFold3, will be put into practice on actual patients.
The news comes as tech companies and research institutions are rolling out new applications for AI in medicine at a frantic pace. Early this month, Microsoft released a report claiming that its new AI Diagnostic Orchestrator is around four times more accurate than a human physician when it comes to diagnosing complex issues. On the same day, researchers at Northwestern Medicine published a study on a new AI-powered device that may revolutionize cancer screening.

What is Isomorphic Labs?
Isomorphic Labs is a London-based drug developer that's owned and operated by Alphabet Inc. The company was founded in 2021 as an offshoot from DeepMind, Google's multidisciplinary AI research arm. In multiple interviews, Isomorphic Labs executives have explained the company's intimidating goal: to eventually 'solve all diseases' using AI.
'This isn't about developing therapeutics for a particular indication or a particular target,' Max Jaderberg, chief AI officer at Isomorphic Labs, explained in an interview this April. 'It's really thinking about, how do we create a really general drug design engine with AI—something that we can apply to not just a single target, or even a single modality, but we can apply this again and again across any different disease area?'
What is AlphaFold AI?
The key unlock driving Isomorphic Labs' expansive goal is its trailblazing AlphaFold AI system, a discovery that earned a Nobel Prize in chemistry last October. The most recent iteration of the technology, AlphaFold3, can predict proteins' complex structures, as well as modeling how certain proteins might interact with other molecules, like DNA and drugs. These insights can essentially give researchers a supercharged headstart on drug development.
DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis explained the tech in a conference call last May: 'You imagine that AlphaFold gives you the structure of a protein you're interested in, in a particular disease, lets say, and with these new capabilities we can now design a compound or ligand (a ' chemical messenger ') that will bind to a specific place . . . on the surface of the protein, once you understand the structure of it, and we can predict how strong the binding affinity will be,' Hassabis said. 'It's a critical step if you want to design drugs.'
Currently, AlphaFold serves as an AI-powered first step in drug development. After the AlphaFold3 system models a potential interaction, researchers then need to use other AI models to predict factors like toxicity and interactions with other drugs. Then, to actually commercialize a new drug, it needs to be tested in wet lab experiments, followed by human clinical trials.
What's happening now?
Now, that human clinical trial step is finally in sight. According to Murdoch, Isomorphic Labs' team is currently 'collaborating with AI to design drugs for cancer,' and is already 'staffing up' for its first human clinical trials.
'One day we hope to be able to say—well, here's a disease, and then click a button and out pops the design for a drug to address that disease, all powered by these amazing AI tools,' Murdoch told Fortune.

While this may fuel dreams of a two-day workweek—or fear an AI-fueled apocalypse—James Zallie, CEO of Fortune 500 food ingredient company Ingredion, has a clear answer: People—and culture—still come first. 'If you take your eye off either the customer or the employee and you get very internally focused, it's a recipe for failure,' said Zallie in an appearance on the Inside the Ice House podcast, hosted by the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange. And while Zallie's $8.7 billion company has embraced technology like AI in part to predict supply chain issues, refine recipe formulations, and keep up with regulations—letting anything distract from people and culture could backfire, the baby boomer said. 'I think in society today that if you don't have a strong culture, your business will suffer. And if you don't focus on people, you will also,' Zallie added. 'People will see through whether you're really living your values and whether you have a care for people in general.' At a time when some companies like Meta and Target have rolled back DEI initiatives, Ingredion still includes 'Everybody Belongs' as one of its five core values. And while serving as CEO is the dream job title for most business leaders, Zallie said in reality, he more so sees his job as a chief clarity officer of sorts—the messenger of what the company is doing—and why. 'We in positions of leadership and management have a responsibility and accountability to (employees) to continuously try to figure out on their behalf how they can have fulfilled careers, be motivated,' he said. 'I look at my job as CEO as chief clarity officer.' Fortune reached out to Zallie for further comment. While Ingredion has made it clear that people are their priority, other companies are rather confident they can do more with less people. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recently said that his $2 trillion company would be shedding members of its corporate workforce thanks to generative AI's enhanced capabilities. 'We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs. It's hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company,' Jassy wrote in an internal memo last month. Microsoft has already put some of this into action by laying off 15,000 employees this year alone. And while the company cited the changes as a means to 'best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace,' the cuts hint at prioritization of automation. Last year, AI saved the company $500 million in its call center alone, reports Bloomberg. And while some CEOs like Salesforce's Marc Benioff and Google's Sundar Pichai have increasingly touted AI automation as somewhat of a flex, its replacement of workers has left many, such as software engineers, feeling helpless. Instead of using layoffs as a means to create a more leaner operation, GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke said the wiser move is to double down on talent. 'The companies that are the smartest are going to hire more developers,' Dohmke said to The Silicon Valley Girl Podcast late last month. That dread you feel on Mondays is real — and it's doing more damage than you think, new study finds
Hate Mondays? Turns out your body does, too. A new study from the University of Hong Kong found that older adults who felt anxious on Mondays had 23% higher levels of stress hormone cortisol in their body up to two months later, compared to those who reported anxiety on other days. And that Monday-specific stress could be quietly damaging your health — no matter your age, job status or daily routine, experts said. The study, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, analyzed data from more than 3,500 adults over age 50 in England. Participants first reported how anxious they felt and what day of the week it occurred. One to two months later, researchers collected hair samples to measure cortisol — a marker of how much stress had accumulated over time. Cortisol helps humans stay alert and respond to threats — but when it stays high for too long, it can weaken the immune system and raise the risk of heart disease, anxiety and other chronic problems. Monday anxiety was the only day linked to a lasting cortisol spike likely because the day carries a sense of 'uncertainty, danger or dread,' said Modupe Akinola, a professor at Columbia Business School who studies stress and performance. This effect showed up even in retirees, a sign that years of Monday stress may leave a lasting imprint on the brain and body. The stress response is partly psychological — driven by our expectations — but shifts in sleep, eating and activity on weekends can also throw off the body's internal clock, making Monday morning feel even worse, Robert Sapolsky, a biologist and neuroscientist at Stanford University who studies stress, told The Post. 'Cortisol is not just reactive — a lot of what it does is anticipatory,' said Sapolsky, author of 'Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers.' 'Expectation of stress can drive cortisol levels even higher than the stress itself.' The jolt from weekend to weekday responsibilities makes Mondays feel harder, noted Akinola. 'There is something effortful about Mondays — you have to get up, get dressed, get focused, deal with traffic, when over the weekend you typically don't deal with these things,' Akinola said. 'All of those extra demands that come on Monday make it feel like you may not have the resources to cope … and your body's stress system is telling you to get ready to battle.' That stress buildup may help explain why heart attacks are more common on Mondays — a pattern documented in previous studies linking the start of the week to increased cardiovascular risk. This repeated psychological strain, especially the kind built into our daily routines, can gradually wear down the body and leave it more vulnerable to long-term health risks, Sapolsky said. Akinola recommends a weekly 'stress inventory' — spotting what you're dreading before your body kicks into fight-or-flight mode. 'People typically don't even realize they are stressed, let alone have clarity on what is stressing them out and how their body might respond,' Akinola said. 'A daily or weekly stress inventory … will help stress move from being background noise to top of mind and when this happens, you can actually take control.'
