How a young stroke survivor beat panic and anxiety and got her life back

To prepare for her first half marathon, Kandi Schmitz signed up for a 5km run. Six friends and family members decided to join her.
The race in Melbourne, in the US state of Florida, was a two-hour drive from Schmitz's home near West Palm Beach. So she decided to make a beach getaway out of it.
By the time hotel reservations were made, the entourage had swollen to more than 20, including Schmitz's husband and their two young sons.
On race day in 2015, Schmitz, then 31, and her fellow runners woke up early and left their families back at the hotel.
The first 45 minutes of the run went smoothly. But with the finish line in sight, Schmitz felt a sharp pain in her left shoulder, like a pinched nerve.
Suddenly she felt lightheaded and feared she would pass out. She sat down on the pavement and put her head between her knees. With the ocean breeze on her face, she felt a little better. But she did not feel stable enough to make it over the finish line.
Her friend Kayla Cabrera, who had already finished, noticed her on the ground and went to help.

Dozens left stranded by Hong Kong's Cathay after flight from New York cancelled

Dozens of angry passengers were left without accommodation after Cathay Pacific Airways cancelled a flight from New York to Hong Kong at the last minute because of a 'technical issue', the Post has learned, and the airline must now submit an investigation report to aviation authorities. The cancellation, which was announced to affected passengers an hour after flight CX843 was scheduled to depart at 1.55am (New York time), left passengers scrambling to find hotels without any offer of support from the airline, according to affected users on social media. They were later told to board another flight a day and a half later. The Civil Aviation Department (CAD) told the Post this week that Cathay had notified it about the incident and would 'submit an investigation report in accordance with the reporting system under the Air Navigation (Hong Kong) Order 1995.' The regulation outlines a mandatory reporting system for incidents and occurrences related to aircraft operations in Hong Kong, requiring airlines to report specified incidents to the CAD within 96 hours. 'The CAD will continue to closely monitor the operating and maintenance standards of our local airlines to ensure that the relevant safety standards and requirements are met,' it said. Images posted by an angry passenger on Chinese social media platform RedNote showed dozens of customers surrounding Cathay staff at John F. Kennedy International Airport's gate counter in New York and inquiring about the flight last Saturday.

Cooper Flagg joins Mavericks, second-youngest top pick in NBA draft after LeBron James

Versatile US college teen star Cooper Flagg was selected first overall in the NBA draft on Wednesday by the Dallas Mavericks, where he'll join a star-laden team already touted as a playoff threat next season. Flagg, a consensus pick as the top US college player as a freshman at Duke University last season, is the second-youngest player taken first overall. Superstar LeBron James was eight days younger when he was taken first overall in 2003 by the Cleveland Cavaliers. 'I'm feeling amazing. It's a dream come true to be honest,' Flagg said after his name was called at the Brooklyn Nets' Barclays Centre, where his family was by his side. 'I wouldn't want to share it with anybody else.' The Mavericks beat the odds to land the top pick in the draft lottery and as expected grabbed Flagg, who averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocked shots per game for the Blue Devils, who lost to Houston in the semi-finals of the NCAA collegiate tournament. The 6ft 9in (2.06 metres) player from Maine is a two-way playmaker with tremendous athleticism and a relentless presence on both ends of the floor. Flagg could be just the player Mavericks fans need to put aside the outrage triggered by the trade of star guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis in February.
