TNCSC to take over DPCs from NCCF in eight districts
Disclosing this to the media, the president of Tamil Nadu Coordination Committee of All Farmers Associations P. R. Pandian said the State's consent to allow the NCCF to procure paddy from the farmers in Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Ramanathapuram and Tirunelveli through its representative, the Tamil Nadu Paddy and Rice Processing Federation (TNPRPF), led to delay or non-payment of sales proceeds or non-procurement of paddy at several places in these eight districts.
Subsequently, the Farmers' Federation and local farmers' associations announced an agitation on May 27 seeking the take over of the paddy procurement operations by the TNCSC from NCCF.
However, a meeting in this regard was held at Chennai on May 26, where it was declared that the TNCSC would take over the paddy procurement operations from the NCCF's representative organisation in these eight districts.
The allegations of non-payment of sale proceeds and delay in procurement of paddy would be sorted out soon by the Corporation, said Mr. P. R. Pandian.

Farmers' associations seek update on Noyyal river restoration project
Farmers' associations have sought removal of encroachments along the Noyyal river embankments and prevention of sewage water entry, and have emphasised on implementation of the project for its restoration. They seek to know the outcome of the ₹990 crore project proposed by the Coimbatore and Tiruppur Corporations for restoration of Noyyal river under the 'Nadanthai Vaazhi Cauvery'. The project entails 40% contribution by the State government and 60% from National River Restoration Fund, managed by the Ministry of Jal Sakthi. The project is supposed to be implemented under the Ministry's National Mission for Clean Ganga. Noyyal, a tributary of Cauvery river, was brought under the river restoration project along with Adyar, Cooum, Vaigai and Vennar rivers in Tamil Nadu. The works proposed include collection, transportation and treatment of municipal sewage, river front development, low-cost sanitation, electric crematoria, and improved wood-based crematoria. After taking stock of the extent of pollution in the Noyyal flowing through Coimbatore city on Friday, president of the Coordination Committee of All Farmers' Associations of Tamil Nadu and coordinator of the Samyuktha Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) P.R. Pandian said the once majestic river originating in the hills has now been reduced to a sewage channel. Industrial effluent and sewage have caused the risk of spread of infectious diseases. Safeguarding of the river was vital for the upkeep of the health of the residents in the city. There was also the risk of groundwater depletion due to the neglect of the river, Mr. Pandian said, urging the State government to rope in industrialists to develop a masterplan for protecting the river. In the recent meeting of the grievances redress session for farmers, the district unit of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam made a representation to the district administration seeking update on the massive project proposed to be undertaken by the Central and State governments for restoration of the river. Just as the Noyyal river in the South of Coimbatore, the Kaushika river in North Coimbatore must also be given importance for restoration in the interests of the several thousands of farmers with small holdings, district unit president of Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam N. Dhandapani and secretary G. Ranganathan emphasised.

Amid import pressure: Govt to promote arhar, urad cultivation in 7 states via seed distribution campaigns
The Department of Consumer Affairs, which comes under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and is responsible for monitoring prices of essential commodities, plans to promote cultivation of two pulses – arhar (tur) and urad– through seed distribution campaigns across a dozen districts in seven states, a top official said Thursday. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said that the promotion of arhar and urad cultivation through seed distribution campaigns would be carried out in the selected districts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Manipur and Tripura. For this, National Cooperative Consumer's Federation of India Limited (NCCF), which comes under the ministry, has already begun preparations, she said. Khare said that the campaign was launched as a pilot in two districts of Jharkhand last year and after encouraging results it is being extended to other states. In the ongoing kharif season (2025), the arhar and urad cultivation will be promoted in Palamu, Latehar and Garhwa in Jharkhand; Mirzapur and Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh; Gaya and Jehabad in Bihar; and Vijaypura in Karnataka. These districts have been identified on two criteria – first they are rainfed, and the second they have 'Aspirational Blocks' identified by the NITI Aayog. Over Rs one crore will be spent on distribution of pulses seeds in these districts and the government will ensure 100 per cent procurement based on the Minimum Support Price (MSP) in these districts if the market prices go down, she said. A report prepared by the NCCF on pilot conducted in two districts of Jharkhand shows that the seed distribution increased productivity. 'This initiative has significantly increased the income levels of the farmers by increasing the productivity by almost 40-50%. Also the farmers have observed the benefit of using the high-yielding variety of seeds. It highlights the successful efforts in boosting pulses production in the region and the positive impact on farmer profitability,' noted the report submitted to the department. India is dependent on imports to meet its pulses demand. It imports about a dozen pulses from different countries. In 2023-24, India's pulses imports rose to a record high of 47.38 lakh tonnes, almost double of 24.96 lakh tonnes in 2022-23. The government has hiked the MSP for pulses in recent years. For the kharif marketing season 2025-26, the MSPs of arhar and urad have been fixed at `8,000 per quintal and `7,800 per quintal, respectively.

Is Tamil Nadu in financial crisis; Madras HC questions non-payment of dues
CHENNAI: Stating that the court has been coming across several petitions praying for disbursal of funds due from the state government, the Madras High Court has questioned whether the government was facing any financial crisis. Justice N Anand Venkatesh raised the query on Tuesday while hearing a petition filed by KTV Health Food Private Limited, a supplier of edible oil to the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, seeking a direction to the government to release outstanding and overdue amount of Rs 141.22 crore. The counsel for the petitioner told the court the outstanding amount has mounted to about Rs 200 crore now. Subsequently, the judge noted that several petitions seeking directions to the government to disburse the money owed to pensioners have also been filed in the recent days. Stating that the government has to function as model, the judge asked, 'Does the government think it need not pay the dues or is there any financial crisis in the state?'. The judge sought the government's response and adjourned the case to June 27.
