UPSI bus crash: MAIDAM channels RM49,500 in aid to families and victims
MAIDAM chief executive officer Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Azrin Adnan said the families of the 15 students who perished will each receive RM1,500, while the 27 injured students will each receive RM1,000.
'This assistance is hoped to ease their burden, as the majority of the students involved come from families who are recipients of MAIDAM's aid for the poor and needy.
'In addition, our visit today is also to gather information on any further assistance the families may require,' he told reporters after presenting the contribution to Maslan Abdul Rahman, 58, the father of Nor Ayuni, 21, who died in the accident, at their home in Felda Tenang, here.
Ahmad Azrin said 13 of the students who perished were from families receiving aid under MAIDAM's hardcore poor and poor (asnaf fakir and miskin) categories.
'Of the 27 injured students, 13 are also from zakat-recipient families under the same categories. Meanwhile, 16 of the students involved in the crash were recipients of MAIDAM's Higher Education Early Assistance,' he said.
On Monday, 15 UPSI students were killed when a chartered bus carrying them from Jertih to the main UPSI campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned in an accident involving a Perodua Alza on the JRTB.
The accident also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and co-driver, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza.

This was revealed by deputy women, family and community development minister Noraini Ahmad, who said her ministry is compiling details of the students affected, Bernama reported. She said the social welfare department (JKM) is assisting the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who sustained permanent disabilities by processing their applications for the OKU card. She added that the ministry is also reaching out to those who suffered other long-term injuries in the June 9 incident. 'The exact number of affected students is still being gathered as we are awaiting medical assessments,' the Wanita Umno chief told reporters after a party meeting in Kepala Batas, Penang today. She said counselling sessions are ongoing for survivors and the families of those who died, including the family in the Perodua Alza involved in the crash, as many remain traumatised. 'Ongoing psychological support is crucial, especially for those grieving the loss of loved ones. I visited the Alza family yesterday and they are still visibly affected,' she said, according to Bernama. 'I urge universities to maintain communication and monitor any self-initiated plans by students,' he told reporters after visiting the home of the late Nurly Sahirah Azman, one of the UPSI students who died in the bus crash, in Kampung Gong Pasir, Kerandang, in Jerteh today. Zambry said the ministry is reviewing various views and suggestions for improvement following the tragic incident, including proposals to schedule student travel during the day instead of at night. 'We take note of all the concerns raised, especially on social media, to prevent any untoward incidents,' he said.

Tugboat detained off Bintulu for alleged Merchant Shipping Ordinance breach
The detained tugboat. – MMEA photo BINTULU (July 4): The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Bintulu Maritime Zone has detained a tugboat suspected of violating the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 during a routine patrol on Wednesday. Bintulu Maritime Zone director, Maritime Captain Muhammad Suffian Eldine Abdullah, said the tugboat was stopped around 2pm, approximately 0.38 nautical miles southwest of Batu Kura-Kura off of here. The enforcement was part of Ops Tiris 3.0 and Ops Permai. Initial checks found eight Indonesian crew members on board, aged between 23 and 48, including the captain. 'The vessel is suspected of violating Section 22(2A) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for failing to notify the Registrar of Ships in writing about a change of captain, as required under the ship's registration certificate,' Muhammad Suffian said in a statement. The offence carries a RM2,500 fine. The tugboat and crew were escorted to the Bintulu Maritime Zone Vessel Detention Centre for further investigation. Muhammad Suffian urged maritime operators to comply with relevant laws and safety protocols. Pregnant woman jailed three years for stealing RM12,000 bracelet
MELAKA: A five-month pregnant woman was sentenced to three years' in jail by the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh here for robbing a female victim of a gold bracelet worth RM12,000. Judge Haderiah Siri meted out the sentence after the accused, Jasila Jamaruddin, 31, pleaded guilty when the charge was read on Friday (July 4). According to the charge sheet, the accused was charged with committing the robbery by snatching the gold bracelet from the hand of a 42-year-old woman in front of an eatery on Jalan Kerambit 4, Bandar Baru Sungai Udang, here at about 11am on May 28. The charge was framed under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 14 years and a fine or whipping, upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Wardah Ishhar requested a sentence that reflected the seriousness of the offence. The accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency because she is five months pregnant and has four young children under the care of the Social Welfare Department. The court ordered her sentence to run concurrently from the date of her arrest on June 10. Meanwhile, in separate proceedings before Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah, the accused's husband, Muhammad Aliff Aiman Zaini, 24, was sentenced to one year's imprisonment after pleading guilty to receiving and disposing the gold bracelet at a pawn shop on Jalan Kiara 1, Kawasan Perniagaan Kiara Semenyih, Hulu Langat in Selangor at about 4pm on May 28. Separately, the couple was also sentenced to five months' jail effective from the date of their arrest on June 4, after pleading guilty before Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani today to stealing various items belonging to a homestay that was valued at RM1,100. The offence was committed at about 1am in a residential unit at a service apartment in Kota Laksamana here on April 26. They were charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, a fine, and whipping for a second or subsequent offence, upon conviction.
