Horizon Karate Centre earns 77 medals at provincials

Horison — The Horizon Karate Centre is riding high after a stellar performance at the provincial championships that took place at the Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg.
The team secured a total of 77 medals and set the stage for their upcoming participation in the SA JKA National Championships.
Among the medal tally, Horizon's members claimed 34 gold, 19 silver, and 24 bronze. Notably, 12 of the gold medalists achieved double golds, showcasing exceptional versatility and dominance in their respective categories.

'We have worked incredibly hard as a team, and it has all paid off. I am incredibly proud of every one of our students,' said Sensei Wendy Wannenburg (6th Dan).
'This success is a testament to their commitment and the spirit of our dojo.'
As a result of their outstanding achievements, 61 karateka from the dojo have qualified to represent Gauteng at the upcoming SA JKA National Championships taking place in Johannesburg in May.
'This year's championships are significant as they incorporate the JKA Africa Cup,' said Wendy.
The Horizon Karate Centre has, over the years, cultivated a reputation for excellence, consistently producing skilled martial artists who excel in competitions.

As the dojo gears up for the prestigious national championships, anticipation and excitement are palpable among the team members. With their eyes set on bringing home even more accolades, the athletes are committed to maintaining their rigorous training regimen.
'Our goal is to continue this impressive streak and showcase what we've accomplished,' added Wendy. 'The upcoming nationals will be a true test of our skills, resilience and unity as a team.'

POLOKWANE – Mitchell House Gr 6 learner Wendy Modiba discovered her love for tennis long before she held a real racket in her hands. Modiba, alongside Mpho Bowers recently represented South Africa in Botswana and Tanzania at the International Tennis Federation (ITF), Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) Circuit and won. In their second meet, Modiba proved that she's a force to reckon with after defeating Malak Macheng from Botswana 6/1, 6/0 in the girls finals. The two played for the first time in the first leg of the tournament. Bowers defeated Chamakh Zhuwakini from Zimbabwe 6/3, 6/1. 'I'm extremely excited that both Mpho and I were able to represent SA and place it on the map as I've always imagined and wished,' she says. As a preschooler, she would play imaginary matches at home using invisible rackets, until her parents finally bought her proper equipment when she entered primary school. Since then, Wendy has developed a great passion for the sport, saying that tennis offers her both physical and mental rewards. 'It's fun and challenging, and I enjoy every part of it whether I'm playing singles, doubles, or just practicing alone,' she says. Her dedication and natural talent have earned her several impressive achievements. Last year, she won the Limpopo edition of the Tennis South Africa (TSA) Baobab Mini Tournament in her age division. She also claimed the title at the ProKennex Mini Tournament in the girls u/12 division in 2022 and the u/10 Gauteng central leg of the Growthpoint Super 8 Tournament held at Ellis Park in 2021. 'I feel so happy to have won yet another trophy, but mostly I'm grateful for the coaches who have supported me along the way.' Mitchell House tennis coach Iggy Matsiela describes Wendy as a passionate and eager learner. 'She's always looking to improve her skills. Tennis promotes fitness and mental sharpness, but it also builds friendships and character and Wendy embodies all of that,' he says. In addition to her tennis accolades, Wendy is also an accomplished swimmer, having won several medals while representing both her school and the province. With her eyes firmly set on turning professional, she continues to train hard and dream big. 'Tennis is my passion, and I want to play it professionally, even after I finish school.' Castle Lager Boktown is a travelling fan park series that brings the full Springbok match-day atmosphere to supporters nationwide. Locals can enjoy a stop featuring a giant-screen broadcast, SA music, appearances by former Boks, family zones and partner activations. This will create a festive and safe space for fans to celebrate the green and gold. SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer said, 'Castle Lager Boktown carries that heartbeat into towns and cities across the country, giving supporters a front-row view and offering partners a platform to enrich the Springbok story.' Horizon Karate Centre is beaming with pride after eight of its students were successfully graded to black belts at the JKA Sub-Sahara Africa grading event, held at Ellis Park Arena on May 22. The prestigious event featured two highly respected Japanese masters from the JKA headquarters in Tokyo, bringing authenticity and high standards to the grading process. Five students – Ada Greyling, Austin Carolus, Tychael Harvie, Juliana Greyling and Aidan Louw – were graded to Shodan, earning their first-degree black belts.
