According to the MEC for Social Development, Faith Mazibuko, these claims are said to be not only misleading but also deliberately distorting the facts to create unnecessary panic within the sector and among the communities that the department serves.
Mazibuko made it clear that while the department experienced funding challenges in the previous financial year, these challenges have been effectively addressed, and the ongoing narrative of a crisis is a gross misrepresentation of facts.
She said the department has adjudicated about 2 000 applications from NPOs.
'So far, over 1 200 letters of award have been issued to successful organisations. Notifications to unsuccessful applicants are underway, with a formal appeals process in place.
Appeals must be lodged within seven days of receiving a rejection notice and are being handled by a dedicated team led by the Deputy Director-General.
'The department has also signed Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with many of the approved NPOs, and over 300 SLAs have already been paid. A brief payment delay occurred due to technical issues at Treasury – a challenge not unique to Gauteng. Several other provinces also only effected NPO payments last week for the same treasury-related reasons.'
According to the MEC, payments are now being processed daily, and the department is on track to complete payments to all approved NPOs by the end of the first quarter of the current financial year.
'The department's ongoing engagement with the NPO sector through meetings and media platforms keeps NPOs informed and supported. These efforts have ensured stability, with no protest action directed at the department's offices.'
The MEC further issued a clear warning that compliance is not an option.
'NPOs are expected to meet all legislative and regulatory requirements, including municipal by-laws, departmental programme registration, and full compliance with the NPO Act. The Department will not be held responsible for the consequences faced by organisations that fail to comply.

KZN Cogta MEC warns Msunduzi Municipality against hindering corruption probe
COOPERATIVE Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has taken the Msunduzi Municipality to task over its efforts to stall an investigation into allegations of corruption within the municipality. Buthelezi wrote to the municipality, warning it to comply with the investigation or face consequences. The Mercury has seen a letter the MEC sent to Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla, in which he warns the city to comply. In a public statement issued on Tuesday regarding the matter, the MEC stated he had issued similar directives for Section 106 investigations in KwaDukuza and Nongoma. He said while the other municipalities were progressing with those investigations, Msunduzi appeared to be defying the instruction. In his letter, the MEC warns Msunduzi against its attempts to block the investigation, stating that the law gives him the mandatory powers to act when requested by the minister of the same portfolio. He added that such action is mandatory, not discretionary.

Ramathuba pleased with business relations established with China
Limpopo premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has shared the outcomes of her recent visit to China, expressing satisfaction with the investment ties formed during the 116th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum (IIICF) and Exhibition, held in Macao from June 8 to 15. Ramathuba was accompanied by MEC for economic development, environment and tourism, Tshitereke Matibe; the MEC for public works, roads and infrastructure, Ernest Rachoene; and the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality mayor, Cllr Edwin Maila. The IIICF is a globally recognised platform aimed at promoting international co-operation in infrastructure development, facilitating cross-border investment, and showcasing innovations in the construction and infrastructure sectors. This year's forum attracted senior government officials, business leaders, development financiers and global investors from more than 70 countries. 'Limpopo used the opportunity to position itself as a key investment destination in South Africa, with a particular focus on the Musina-Makhado and Fetakgomo-Tubatse Special Economic Zones (SEZs),' Ramathuba said. 'These SEZs are strategically located and rich in mineral and agricultural resources, offering strong potential for infrastructure development, beneficiation and sustainable industrialisation.' She said Limpopo's participation in the forum marked a significant milestone, adding that she was encouraged by the level of interest shown in the province's development plans.
