Bok assistant coach Stick says Italy are perfect opponents in early season

'The way they have been playing in the Six Nations, they had good results... So we have to make sure we give them their respect.'
Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick said Italy are the perfect opponents for South Africa in their first official Test match of the season.
South Africa take on Italy at Loftus on Saturday (kick-off 5.10pm) after crushing invitational side Barbarians 54–7 last weekend.
Italy have been weak historically but are much improved in recent years. They beat Namibia 73–6 last week. Also, since the beginning of last year they have beaten Wales (twice), Georgia, Japan, Tonga and Scotland, drawing to France and losing to Ireland by five points and England by three.
They finished fifth in the Six Nations, but their scrum was statistically better than Ireland's and Scotland's. They ended with an impressive 75.68% scrum win percentage. At the same time, Ireland had 75% and Scotland had 70.37%. That, while Italy are known to be a good attacking team.
Italy: More than just passion
Stick said, 'You could not ask for a better team' as an opponent.
'The way they have been playing in the Six Nations, they had good results. Even when they played against teams like Ireland, they were close until the end. So we have to make sure we give them their respect,' the coach said.
'They are a very well-organised team. If you look at the stats from the Six Nations and the way they've balanced their game. Everyone keeps on saying they like to play running rugby but you must look at the [kicking stats]. This is a team that averages around 31 kicks per game.
'They are very organised as a team. Having a coach from Argentina [Gonzalo Quesada] and we know Argentinians are also very emotional people. So I think now they are getting a good balance in a sense of controlling the emotions and making sure they convert them into rugby.'
Springboks must play against Italy as France did
Stick said Italy were a team that would hurt the Springboks if they had too much possession and momentum. He said their outside backs in particular, would have to be shut down.
'It was only France that put them away with over 60 points [73–24]. And that only happened later on in the game. France, when they played against them, they made sure that they did their plans very well physically and they capitalised on their opportunities.
'I think that is going to be the key thing for us also. We want to start well and bring some proper intensity into the game. As long as we keep executing the plans we spoke about, if we can improve on last week, we will have a better chance to win the game.'

Updated world rankings after every Test this weekend

During an action-packed weekend of Test rugby, the Springboks got the job done with a 42-24 victory against Italy, and that ensures there aren't too many major changes at the top of the world rankings. South Africa could not improve their ranking points with a win over 10th-placed Italy, but a shock loss could have seen either France or New Zealand move to top spot. In the end, the second-placed All Blacks did improve their tally by 0.62 points after picking up a hard-fought victory over a weakened France team. Faf lauds ‘fantastic' Van den Berg

Scrumhalf Morné Van den Berg put in an assured performance in what was an underwhelming Springbok display in the first Test against Italy. The nuggety No 9 scored two tries in the 55 minutes he played to remind coach Rassie Erasmus that he's a real contender for that jersey ahead of the Rugby Championship and end-of-year tour. The man who replaced him last night, Faf de Klerk, told SuperSport that Van den Berg's quality is shining through. READ: Boks go into Gqeberha Test with 'bruised egos' 'He's a fantastic player,' said the 59-Test veteran. 'I'm really glad he's taking the opportunities he's getting. He's doing really well for the Lions and showing his quality now. He's a great guy and wants to learn as much as he can, so it's always awesome having that guy in the squad.' Looking ahead to next weekend, De Klerk says the squad as a whole will need to give an honest assessment of what went wrong in Pretoria. 'There's going to be disappointment in our performance. There was some good stuff and some bad things we can work on. Credit to Italy, they really made it hard for us especially at the breakdown. We couldn't get that momentum going, and I thought their forwards were phenomenal. Definitely some things we'll need to look at in the week and fix before the next Test.' ALSO: Kriel: Italy got us at the breakdown After the match, Erasmus expressed his frustration at his team's performance and says he may need to re-look the planned selections for the second Test in Gqeberha. 'Internally we've announced that 13, 14 players that will definitely get a run next week, and that we'd build the bench or starting line-up around those guys,' he said. 'We won't discard those guys but some of them might move to the bench, some of the real standout players who played today might start again.' ‘There is going to be disappointment': Faf and Kriel admit fans expected dominance

Faf de Klerk and Jesse Kriel gave Italy their due but admitted the Boks underdelivered in a game tipped to be one-sided. Springbok captain Jesse Kriel scores a try against Italy. After the game he said his side failed to follow up on their momentum from the first half. Picture: Anton Geyser/Gallo Images Although they expected a tough challenge and acknowledged their opponents' performance, the Springboks conceded they did not meet the expectations of their supporters in Saturday's Test at Loftus. The Springboks won six tries to four (final score 42–24) in their first Test of the season, which was expected to be entirely one-sided. Italy may be vastly improved when compared to previous years. But they are ranked 10th in the world and playing away against the world champions with an understrength side. Still, they fought back from a 28–3 deficit at half-time to win the battle at the breakdown and show up some of the best locks in the world in the lineout. Italy even scored a try from a driving maul that started around the Springboks' 22, something unheard of against the traditionally dominant forward pack. They controlled momentum to score 21 points to the Springboks' 14 in the second half. Kriel says the world wrote Italy off 'We knew from the beginning of the week it was going to be a tough Test match,' said Jesse Kriel, standing in for Siya Kolisi to become the 67th Springbok captain on the day. He had warned fans earlier in the week not to write Italy off. 'We know the Italians are extremely passionate nation. They pitched up tonight very energetic, and that showed up in their play. We didn't get exactly what we wanted with the quick ball on attack. In defence, we are not happy with four tries [against us]… 'There's a lot of things for us to work on. We drive extremely high standards in the squad. The whole rugby world were writing them off and we certainly weren't.' He said the Springboks failed to follow up on their strong first-half performance. 'In the second half they defended like their lives depended on it. So we are happy with the win but a big Test match awaits us next week.' Springboks could not hold onto momentum against Italy Scrumhalf Faf de Klerk, who returned after missing much of last season due to injury, said 'there is going to be disappointment in tonight's performance'. 'There was a lot of good stuff and bad things we can work on,' he said. 'Credit to Italy, they really made it hard for us, especially at the breakdown. We couldn't get that momentum going. 'I thought their forwards were phenomenal tonight. That is definitely something we must look in the week at, make sure we fix it before the next Test.' The Springboks play their second and final Test against Italy at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha next Saturday.
