Jess Fishlock still believes as Wales throw Netherlands loss ‘in the bin'

Wales fell flat on their major tournament debut and sunk to the bottom of Group D following goals from Vivianne Miedema – her 100th at international level – Victoria Pelova and Esmee Brugts on Saturday.
However, the lowest-ranked team in the competition have no time to wallow as they head to St Gallen to take on a France side buoyant after a 2-1 win over England.
Thank you/Diolch, I have never experienced anything like the reception our @Cymru fans gave us today. Our group is tough, our opposition some of the best in the world, we WILL keep fighting. Two more opportunities to give it all we've got. #Togetherstronger #Cymru pic.twitter.com/YPDwzQc5XU

Fishlock, Wales' most capped player and all-time leading goalscorer, insisted a top-two finish remains in their own hands but only if they quickly draw a line under what happened at the weekend.
'I know us as a group, we will refocus, we will learn really fast and we're really excited to get back on the field on Wednesday,' the 38-year-old told BBC Sport Wales.
'If you're going to ask me if I still believe that (Wales can reach the knockout stages), then I will say, wholeheartedly, I still believe.
'The biggest message is not to dwell too much on the game and the loss. I think we really need to take what we need to take from it, move forward and throw the rest in the bin.
Diolch Y Wal Goch ♥️
You played your part in history with incredible support. It means everything to us. pic.twitter.com/hSRY72aT0U

'That's my favourite saying: take what you need to take and throw the rest in the bin. It's not going to help you and if it's not going to help you, it's just going to hurt you.'
Fishlock was adamant Wales, who will be able to call upon Ceri Holland after she went down with cramp against the Dutch, will not be going out all guns blazing at the Kybunpark in order to prove a point.
'We don't have to win it in the first five minutes,' she added. 'We have to stay in it as long as possible and use the players that we have. We have some fantastic players that can cause damage to any team.'

Wimbledon 2025: Who has made it through to the finals?

Get ready for an exciting weekend of sport as the Wimbledon finals are set to take place. British professional and reigning Wimbledon champion Alfie Hewett will be taking to court 1 on Saturday and Sunday. He'll be playing in the men's wheelchair doubles final at 11am on Saturday (12 July) as well as the men's wheelchair final on Sunday (13 July) at 11am. The women's final is also taking place on Saturday at 4pm while the men's final will happen on Sunday at who'll be playing who? Keep reading to find out. Wimbledon men's singles final Carlos Alcaraz will be looking to retain the men's Wimbledon title as he faces Jannik Sinner on Sunday. It's Sinner's first Wimbledon final and it wasn't an easy feat to get there. He had to beat 7-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic in the semi finals to do it. The last time the pair played against each other in a Grand Slam final was in a French Open thriller that lasted over five hours. That title went to Alcaraz but could it be Sinner's turn to lift the trophy at Wimbledon for the first time? Wimbledon women's singles final Iga Swiatek is no stranger to a Wimbledon final, but not on such a big stage. She won a junior Wimbledon title back in 2019. She's since gone on to win five Grand Slam titles, but Wimbledon is one she is yet to get. It will be Amanda Anisimova's first Wimbledon final and if she wins, it would be the first Grand Slam title of her career. Wimbledon men's wheelchair final Alfie Hewett won both the singles and the doubles titles last year and he's hoping to do the same again. His first final is the doubles with his partner Gordon Reid on Saturday. But he won't have long to rest. Hewett will be back in action in the men's wheelchair final on Sunday to defend his title.

Viktor Gyokeres insists he's as good as Harry Kane and Erling Haaland - as Arsenal and Man United target warns: 'You haven't seen the best of me yet'

Viktor Gyokeres is confident of taking the Premier League by storm if he returns to England this summer. The Sporting Lisbon striker — formerly of Brighton, Swansea and Coventry — has been widely linked with interest from both Manchester United and Arsenal. That interest comes after Gyokeres scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting. He previously netted 41 times in 121 appearances in England's EFL Championship, although he has yet to play in the Premier League despite being on Brighton's books for four years. However, now aged 27, Gyokeres believes he is ready to thrive on the main stage. Speaking to L'Equipe this week, Gyokeres was asked where he felt he currently ranked among the top strikers in world football. Names like Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland were put to Gyokeres, who replied: 'I'm definitely one of them. 'It's difficult to rank me, but yes, I'm at the same table as them now. What I managed to do at Sporting, I am convinced I can achieve anywhere. 'You haven't seen the best of me yet.' Such a confident statement is certain to make Arsenal and United fans even more excited about the prospect of signing Gyokeres this summer. At present, Arsenal look like the more likely destination. Indeed, it was reported earlier this week that Gyokeres was ready to refuse to turn up for pre-season training with Sporting in order to push for a move to the Gunners. However, Gyokeres sounded calm as he told L'Equipe: 'The future? That's football, you never know. 'I'm not thinking about that [leaving], we'll see what happens. If something is meant to happen, it will. 'The most important thing for me is to play for a club that really wants me.' Kane and Haaland are two of the most prolific frontmen in Premier League history. England captain Kane, now of Bayern Munich in Germany, is second on the all-time list of Premier League scorers having netted 213 times for Tottenham. Kane twice reached the 30-goal mark in a season — in 2017-18 and then again in the 2022-23 campaign. He and Haaland are among only 10 players who have ever netted 30 or more goals in a single Premier League season. Meanwhile, Haaland holds the record for most Premier League goals in one campaign, having hit 36 during his first season with Manchester City in 2022-23.

Wales fend off Japan fightback to end losing run

Played under the closed roof of the Noevir Stadium, Wales scored three first-half tries, with Josh Adams opening the scoring and Kieran Hardy going over twice after Lee Seung-sin's penalty, but Japan struck on the stroke of half-time through Shuhei Takeuchi. Although Dan Edwards' penalty extended Wales' lead, they slipped into trouble as two tries in quick succession from Warner Dearns and Dylan Riley brought Japan back into the game. 🚨 𝙎𝙜ô𝙧 𝙏𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙡 | 🇯🇵22-31🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Buddugoliaeth ❤️🙌#WelshRugby | #JPNvWAL — Welsh Rugby Union 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 (@WelshRugbyUnion) July 12, 2025 However, Edwards crossed with five minutes remaining to seal a much-needed victory for Wales and snap a lengthy losing run to secure a first Test win since beating Georgia at the 2023 World Cup. Matt Sherratt made four changes from the side beaten by The Brave Blossoms last weekend, with Freddie Thomas, Archie Griffin and Aaron Wainwright lining up alongside Edwards, who was making his first start. Wales scored the opening try when Blair Murray squeezed through a gap and charged down the pitch before offloading to Adams to cross. Edwards added the conversion. Japan had a great opportunity when Ichigo Nakakusu eased through the Welsh defence and looked to have played in Michael Leitch, but the flanker was hauled down as Wales recovered. A mistake allowed Wainwright to pounce on a loose ball before launching a tidy grubber kick up-field for Adams. The winger reached the ball on the try-line but was unable to get a firm grip to ground it and it bounced out of play. Japan earned their first points of the game from Lee's penalty kick, but the visitors extended their advantage shortly afterwards from a line-out where the rolling maul reached the edge of the try-line and Hardy was able to reach over and touch down, with Edwards converting. 💥 Josh Adams 🤝 Kieran Hardy 💪#WelshRugby #JPNvWAL — Welsh Rugby Union 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 (@WelshRugbyUnion) July 12, 2025 Faulua Makisi was sent to the sin bin and Wales soon took advantage of their extra man when a great switch in play allowed Adams to cut in from the left and break forward before passing into Hardy, who dived over, with Edwards scoring from the tee. Japan pulled a try back just before half-time when Takeuchi surged over the line and Lee converted. Wales suffered an early blow after the break when Nicky Smith was forced off through injury. Gareth Thomas came on, and although Japan started well, it was Wales who struck next as Edwards kicked a penalty. The hosts then enjoyed a superb build-up of phases which resulted in Dearns powering over the line and following a TMO review the try stood, but Lee's conversion flew wide of the posts. Wales suddenly found themselves in trouble as Riley latched onto a sloppy pass and sprinted up the centre of the pitch to cross underneath the posts. Lee converted to reduce the gap to two points. A cagey end to the game followed, but the visitors piled forward with five minutes to play and a quick move to the left allowed Edwards to cross before converting his own effort to wrap up the win.
