‘A prominent Indian cricketer told me to retire': Karun Nair reveals ahead of India vs England Test comeback
Post the 2022 domestic season, Nair was snubbed from all formats by Karnataka. The right-handed batter went nearly 14 months without any competitive cricket before finding a revival through a County Championship contract with Northamptonshire. Nair revealed that a prominent Indian cricketer said retiring to focus on T20 leagues would provide him with financial security.
'I still remember a prominent Indian cricketer calling me and saying you need to retire because the money in these leagues would make me secure,' Nair told in an interview with the Daily Mail. 'It would have been easy to do, but I knew that regardless of the money, I would be kicking myself for giving up that easily,' the 33-year-old said as he recounted the incident from two years ago.
'I was never going to give up on playing for India again. That was just over two years ago and look where we are now,' he insists. 'It's crazy but deep down, I knew I was good enough.'

Nair has strengthened his case to make the India Test XI again after making a roaring comeback during the India A clash against England Lions recently in Canterbury. Nair slammed a double-century against the Lions side, marking his 5th First-Class century since the start of the year where he led Vidarbha's run to the Ranji Trophy title with three knockouts centuries.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir hailed Nair's perseverance before the team's first hit out in England ahead of the first match, starting on Friday in Headingley.
'No matter how many runs you have scored – what matters most is that never-say-die attitude, that never-give-up mindset. That's what has brought you back into the team. It's something that inspires the whole world,' Gambhir said in a BCCI.tv video.
Having featured in six Tests between 2016-17, Nair amassed 374 runs, including a record-breaking 303 not out against England in Chennai, nine years ago.

India 'A' men's hockey team leaves for Netherlands for upcoming tour of Europe
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], July 5 (ANI): The India 'A' Men's Hockey team left for Eindhoven, Netherlands on Saturday morning for the Tour of Europe, scheduled from July 8 to July 20, 2025. Led by Captain Sanjay and Vice-Captain Moirangthem Rabichandra Singh, India 'A' will play eight matches in total across three cities in Europe. While India A will play two matches each against Ireland, France, and the Netherlands in Eindhoven (Netherlands), they will play one match each against England and Belgium in Amstelveen (Netherlands) and Antwerp (Belgium), respectively, as per a press release from Hockey India. These matches are expected to test the depth and readiness of players as the national setup looks to build a stronger talent pool for the Indian senior team. The India 'A' Captain, Sanjay, said, 'This tour will be a good testing ground for us to know our strengths and weaknesses. We have a good mix of seasoned players and young players, and the tour will provide us with strong competition to assess where they stand. This kind of international exposure will also help us strengthen our main team in the future and create a good bench strength in the long run.' Vice-Captain Moirangthem added, 'The tour will help the team understand the different dynamics and intensity of playing against top European teams in Europe. This exposure will also help some of the younger players experience hockey at a much different pace than they are used to in India. "You deserve all of this": Gill earns plaudits from his predecessor Virat Kohli after match-defining exploits in Birmingham
New Delhi [India], July 5 (ANI): India's batting mainstay Virat Kohli had unstinting praise in store for Test captain Shubman Gill, who redefined the art of batting with a record-shattering hundred in the second innings of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. At a venue where India is yet to register its maiden Test win, Gill led from the front following his memorable 269(387) in the first innings and then topped it up with a flamboyant 161(162) in his second turn to rescript the history books on the fourth day. Gill, who etched his name with golden words while batting at number four, earned plaudits from his predecessor, Virat, who made the position his own during his 14-year-long stint. 'Well played, star boy. Rewriting history. Onwards and upwards from here. You deserve all of this,' Virat wrote on Instagram. Gill's prowess reflected in the sizzling numbers he garnered throughout his endeavours on the crease. With a whopping 430 runs across both innings, Gill has the second-highest aggregate of runs in a single Test, behind England's Graham Gooch, who had an output of 456 runs after scoring 333 and 123 against India at Lord's back in 1990. Gill became the second batter to register 150-plus scores in both innings of a Test after Allan Border (150* & 153) against Pakistan in Lahore in 1980. Gill's outing is also the first instance of a 250-plus and 150-plus score in a Test by a batter. The 25-year-old is only the second Indian, after Gavaskar, to hit a double century and a century in the same Test, scoring 124 and 220 against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 1971. Other batters having achieved this feat include Australia's KD Walters, West Indies RG Lowe, Australia's Greg Chappell, England's Gooch, WI icon Lara, Sri Lanka's Sangakkara and Australia's Marnus Labuschagne. He has outdone ex-skipper and legendary batter Virat (243 and 50) to have the highest aggregate by an Indian captain in a Test match. Virat's effort came against Sri Lanka at his home stadium, Arun Jaitley Stadium, back in December 2017. Gill is the second Asian batter with 350-plus aggregate in a Test outside the subcontinent after Pakistan's Hanif Mohammad (354: 17 and 337) at Bridgetown in 1958. (ANI)
