Gerik bus crash: APM officer recounts darkest moment in 18-year career
IPOH: The crash at Kilometre 53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik, which claimed 15 lives early yesterday morning, marked a dark moment in the 18-year career of Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) officer, Muhammad Yusuf Nuruddin.
Initially unaware of the severity of the tragedy, involving a chartered bus and a Perodua Alza, near Tasik Banding, the APM officer, from Hulu Perak, believed it was just a routine accident without any casualties.
When he and three other personnel of Hulu Perak APM - Mohd Zamri Taib, 47, Muhammad Isma Aliff Mohd Asri, 24, and Muhammad Mainun Azim Azman, 28 - were informed that the crash had resulted in 15 fatalities, they were momentarily stunned.
'I recall bus-related incidents before - one overturned and another veered off the road, but none involved any fatalities. This time, it was different, and it's something I will never forget.
'I didn't even get to see the condition of the deceased victims because my priority was to provide immediate aid. We handed over the deceased to the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) and the Ministry of Health (MOH),' he told Bernama, still visibly affected by the incident.
Asked to elaborate, Muhammad Yusuf, 38, said that the APM team arrived at the crash site about an hour after receiving the emergency call.
Upon arrival, the JBPM and MOH teams were already on-site conducting rescue operations. The area was pitch-black, forcing rescuers to rely on vehicle headlights for visibility. In the dim light, they noticed several injured victims sitting by the roadside.
'At that time, the atmosphere was eerily quiet and completely dark. There were no sounds from the victims. Only the rescuers' voices giving instructions could be heard. Perhaps the victims were still in shock,' he said.
During the rescue operation, Muhammad Yusuf and his team worked fast to provide initial aid to the victims, including those with serious injuries like broken limbs or internal bleeding.
He remembered seeing a victim with a serious head injury. An initial assessment revealed no visible fractures, so rescuers provided immediate treatment before transporting the victim to hospital.
'Then we transported another victim with a broken arm to the Gerik Hospital, while ambulances from MOH and JBPM ferried others.
'During the journey to the hospital, one victim suffered internal bleeding and vomited blood twice. We suctioned the blood to prevent suffocation and ensure it did not obstruct the victim's breathing,' he said.
In addition to the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students who lost their lives, the accident also resulted in injuries to 33 other individuals, including the bus driver, his assistant, and three passengers from a Perodua Alza.

Singapore doctor admits to forging medical certs to offer unqualified aesthetic treatments
Published on: Monday, June 30, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 30, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: A Singaporean doctor has admitted to falsifying medical certificates in an attempt to provide aesthetic treatments at his clinic without the necessary credentials. — AFP pic SINGAPORE: A doctor in Singapore has pleaded guilty to forging medical certificates in a bid to offer aesthetic treatments at his clinic without having the required qualifications. Bernard Tan Wen Sheng admitted to using his wife's certificates as templates to create four forged documents, two of which he used to falsely claim competency in procedures such as chemical peels and intense pulsed light (IPL) hair removal, according to Channel News Asia. Dr Tan submitted the altered certificates to the Ministry of Health (MOH) in February 2023 as part of the licence application process for Bay Aesthetics Clinic at Marina Bay Link Mall. He had not attended two of the workshops and had lost the original certificates for the other two procedures — filler injections and botulinum toxin injections — which he had completed. Despite warnings from MOH about legal consequences for false submissions, Dr Tan maintained the lie, claiming his documents had been damaged in a house fire and scanned by relatives, resulting in poor image quality. MOH eventually approved his application but restricted his practice to the services he had legitimately attended workshops for. Dr Tan subsequently completed the missing workshops in April 2023, after the false submissions were uncovered. The prosecution is seeking a jail term of four to six months, citing risks to public health and the need for deterrence against forgery involving public institutions. Sentencing is scheduled for July 29. Dr Tan remains a registered medical practitioner, with his practising certificate valid until the end of the year. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? JHEAT warns against superstitious acts at Nurly Sahirah's grave
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (JHEAT) has issued a stern warning against superstitious practices at the gravesite of Nurly Sahirah Azman, one of the victims of the recent fatal bus crash in Gerik, Perak. JHEAT Enforcement Division Chief Assistant Commissioner Aizi Saidi stated that any acts violating Islamic law, such as khurafat (superstitious beliefs) or syirik (idolatry), may face penalties under Section 3A of the Terengganu Syariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) Enactment 2001. Offenders could be fined up to RM5,000 or jailed for three years. Aizi confirmed that JHEAT, through the Besut Religious Office Enforcement Unit, will conduct regular monitoring to prevent such practices. 'Witchcraft, sorcery, or any act contradicting Islamic teachings will not be tolerated,' he said. The warning follows a viral social media post alleging that visitors had taken soil from the grave for superstitious purposes. In response, Nurly Sahirah's family has cordoned off the area to prevent further incidents. Nurly Sahirah was among 15 Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) students who died in the June 9 crash when their bus overturned and collided with a Perodua Alza on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik. The accident also injured 33 others, including drivers and passengers.

JHEAT To Act Against Any Superstitious Acts At Nurly Sahirah's Gravesite
GENERAL KUALA TERENGGANU, June 30 (Bernama) -- JHEAT has warned against any form of khurafat (superstitious belief) being practised at the grave of the late Nurly Sahirah Azman, who died in the recent bus crash in Gerik, Perak. JHEAT Enforcement Division Chief Assistant Commissioner Aizi Saidi said any act that contradicts Islamic law could be subject to action under Section 3A of the Terengganu Syariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) Enactment 2001, which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to three years. He said JHEAT, through the Besut Religious Office Enforcement Unit, would carry out regular monitoring to ensure that no syirik (idolatry) or khurafat practices take place at the gravesite. 'Any individual who engages in witchcraft, sorcery or any act that goes against the enactment may be subject to legal action. 'Those who refuse to comply may be liable to a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment not exceeding three years if convicted. JHEAT takes such khurafat acts that go against religious teachings very seriously,' he said when contacted. A social media post, which went viral last Friday, claimed that several visitors had taken soil from the gravesite to keep for a specific purpose. In response, the family of the late Nurly Sahirah has cordoned off the grave area to prevent a recurrence of the act. Nurly Sahirah was among 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who died in an accident on June 9, when the bus they were travelling in overturned and collided with a Perodua Alza along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik. The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza.
