Punjab made sacrifices for unity of Pakistan: Talal Chaudhry

FAISALABAD: State Minister for Interior and senior PML-N leader Senator Talal Chaudhary said that Punjab has consistently made extraordinary sacrifices for the unity of Pakistan and these sacrifices would shatter all conspiracies against Pakistan.
He was addressing a press conference on Sunday after offering condolences to the family of Sheikh Majid Ayub, a young businessman from Faisalabad, who was martyred in a terrorist attack in Zhob, Balochistan.
Talal Chaudhry termed the Balochistan incident a clear precedent of Punjab's factual commitment for national solidarity and sacrifice and said Majid Ayub, who frequently travelled to Balochistan for his textile business, was targeted on his return. He embraced martyrdom in an act of terrorism that was not random, but a planned proxy attack sponsored by enemy forces with clear links to India, he added.
He said that the enemy is attempting to divide Pakistan on ethnic and linguistic lines, but fails to realize that every street of Punjab houses Baloch, Pashtun, Sindhi, Kashmiri and Gilgiti brothers, who live, study, work and heal together in unity.
He highlighted Punjab's historical generosity, citing its sacrifices in the NFC Award, its sharing of water resources with Balochistan and now, its blood. 'When water was needed, Punjab gave its share. When money was required, Punjab contributed and now, when blood is demanded, our sons are laying down their lives', he said.
He praised the courage of Majid Ayub's mother and said that she had received her martyred son's body with pride, embodying the spirit of every Pakistani mother who sends her child to defend the homeland.
Talal Chaudhary said that terrorism knows no religion, language, or ethnicity rather it is fueled by dollars and foreign agendas. He pointed directly at India's involvement, accusing it of switching from overt warfare to covert attacks through sponsored terrorist networks. However, he said that Pakistan's security forces and citizens have time and again defeated such enemies with resilience and unity.
He revealed that Pakistan's security agencies conduct over 150 intelligence-based operations daily, pre-empting over 90% of planned attacks. The current counterterrorism campaign is a continuation of ongoing kinetic and non-kinetic operations in which the federal and Balochistan governments are fully aligned, he added.
He said that terrorists now target soft civilian spots like markets, schools, and hospitals, which is an obvious proof of their moral and ideological bankruptcy. During press conference, Talal Chaudhary condemned political leaders who only come to Punjab for votes but remain absent when its youths are martyred.
He reminded the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government of its responsibility to build Counter-Terrorism Departments, forensic labs, and smart surveillance systems to effectively combat terrorism, just as Punjab has done.
He dismissed the notion that terrorists are representative of any ethnic group and said that a terrorist is neither Baloch, nor Pashtun, nor Punjabi, rather they are enemies of humanity.
He outlined the horrifying statistics and said 406 attacks were made on gas installations, 56 schools were destroyed and 178 hospitals were targeted in addition to 219 ethnically-motivated attacks that claimed 514 lives and most of their victims were from Punjab.
He called on all political parties and citizens to unite beyond political affiliations and support the security forces as was done during Nawaz Sharif's government when collective political support helped restore peace from Quetta to Karachi.
'We are Punjabis, Baloch, Sindhis, Pashtuns, Kashmiris and Gilgitis after we are Pakistanis first', he said, adding that the country was founded in the name of 'Kalimah Tayyabah' and its defence is a sacred duty.
He referenced the recent 'Operation Sandur' as a stark reminder of what happens when enemies confront Pakistan head-on. 'Whether the threat is direct or covert, the result would always be the same i.e. total defeat for the aggressors', he added.
Addressing those who seek political mileage from foreign soil, Talal Chaudhry criticized certain PTI leaders for lobbying against Pakistan abroad while instigating unrest at home.
He said that many of the so-called 'missing persons' were in fact militants who had deliberately gone underground and were later killed during counterterrorism operations.
Responding to a question, Talal Chaudhry expressed hope that this would be the last condolence visit he ever has to make, but he acknowledged that as long as mothers like Majid Ayub's exist who embrace their martyred sons with strength and pride, the enemy would never succeed.
'We are not fighting as Punjabis or Baloch but as Pakistanis and Pakistan would always emerge victorious, Insha Allah', he added.

Poll body reshuffles K-P seats distribution

Listen to article The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday unveiled its order with regard to allocation of reserved seats to various political parties in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly on petitions filed by the PML-N, the ANP and the PTI-Parliamentarians. According to the written order, one women's seat and one minority seat previously allocated to the JUI-F have been withdrawn. As a result of the PML-N gaining one additional women's seat, both the JUI-F and the PML-N now have 17 members each, including 9 women and 1 minority member. One minority seat will be decided by a coin toss between the two parties. The PPP also lost one women's seat and is now left with 5 women and 1 minority seat, totaling 10 seats in the assembly. The ANP and the PTI-P each have 2 general and 1 women's seat. One women's seat will be decided between them in a coin toss. The final seat allocations will become clear after these tosses. The polls oversight authority also accepted independent lawmaker Tariq Awan's request to join the PML-N. It, however, turned down the PTI-Parliamentarian and the ANP's request to be granted one additional reserved seat on the basis of two general seats. It noted that a seat won in a by-election cannot be counted towards allocation of reserved seats. Despite the ECP's decision regarding reserved seats and a letter from K-P Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, urging Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur to convene a session of the assembly, there is uncertainty over the oath-taking of the new members and the upcoming Senate elections. At the K-P government level, consultations among legal experts are ongoing. If the new members are not sworn in during working days before July 19, the Senate elections could once again be postponed. The PTI's provincial government has yet to decide on calling an assembly session in which the new members would be sworn in. Opposition parties have already submitted a request to the assembly secretary to call the session, but despite this, the K-P government remains undecided and continues consultations with legal experts. A related case is being heard in the Peshawar High Court, which has sought a reply from the advocate general by today (Wednesday)* The situation is expected to become clearer after that. If the provincial government still does not convene the session for the oath-taking, then under the 26th Constitutional Amendment, the chief justice himself—or his representative—can administer the oath to the new members. However, if the oath is not administered, the Senate elections scheduled for July 21 may once again be in jeopardy. While Senate elections were held in April last year in the other three provinces and at the federal level, elections could not be held in the K-P due to non-allocation of reserved seats. The Provincial Assembly Secretariat is expected to hand over the Assembly Hall to the ECP between July 16 and 18, so that arrangements can be made to use it as a polling station for the Senate elections. In this regard, the K-P election commissioner, along with his delegation, called on the KP Assembly speaker, Babar Saleem Swati, at the speaker's chamber. The meeting focused on matters related to the election code of conduct, administrative preparations, and ensuring a transparent electoral process. Leader of the Opposition Dr Ibadullah was also present alongside the speaker during the meeting. The ECP delegation requested full cooperation from the KP Assembly for the smooth conduct of the Senate elections and emphasized that the electoral process should be carried out peacefully, in accordance with the Constitution, law, and the code of conduct. The speaker assured the delegation of complete support and stated that the assembly would provide a fair, transparent, and dignified environment for the Senate elections. He said democratic traditions would be upheld and the electoral process would be peaceful and effective.

Reserved seat quota recalculation at belated stage not supported by law: ECP

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has declared that the recalculation of quota for reserved seats at belated stage after allocation or reserved seats to the political parties is not supported by the Constitution and law. 'The rationale for calculation of quota for the reserved seats on the basis of party position on 22-02-2025 was to avoid unending controversies. For example, if a political party succeeds in getting more seats as a result of recounting or by-election or decision of the tribunal, the quota will be revised again and again and it will be an unending process which is against the spirit of Constitution and Law…', reads the written order in the reserved seats case, issued by a five-member ECP full bench on Tuesday. The bench rejected the petitions of Awami National Party (ANP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians (PTIP) for the reallocation of reserved seats for women and non-Muslims in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly (KPA). The bench also directed that the name of one Malik Tariq Awan be included for the 'purpose of calculation of quota and allocation of reserved seats for women and non-Muslims to the political party (PML-N) joined by him in the Provincial Assembly of KP within prescribed period.' In connection with the reserved seats case, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) submitted 21 nominations for KPA. Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) submitted 15 nominations, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) 14 nominations, ANP 11 nominations and PTIP has submitted 10 nominations to the ECP for KPA reserved seats. The allocation of reserved seats on the part of ECP on 2 July, in pursuance of the apex court's 27 June order, suggested that PML-N received the largest chunk of 43 reserved seats, followed by 15 reserved seats having gone to PPP, and 12 seats to JUI-F, as the poll body has allotted a total of 74 of 77 reserved seats to other political parties in four Assemblies. In KPA, of the 25 allotted seats, comprising 21 women and four non-Muslim seats, JUI-F received 10 seats (eight women, two non-Muslims), PML-N got seven reserved seats (six women and a non-Muslim), PPP also got seven reserved seats (six women and a non-Muslim), and ANP received a woman seat. Apart from that, Senate elections are taking place on seven general seats, two women seats and two technocrats' seats of KP on 21st July. In addition, the election on a Senate woman seat from KP, that fell vacant following the resignation of Sania Nishtar from PTI, would be held on 31 July. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
