Mohit Suri Says Ahaan Panday Nearly Lost Saiyaara Due To SRK Mimicry Video: 'He's Such A Wicked Guy'

News183 days ago
Ahaan Panday almost lost Saiyaara because of his SRK mimicry videos, says Mohit Suri. 'People told him—do you want to mimic or act?'
Before Ahaan Panday made his much-talked-about Bollywood debut with Saiyaara, the internet had already formed its opinion. Old videos of the young actor mimicking Shah Rukh Khan and recreating iconic scenes from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Mohabbatein had gone viral, drawing widespread criticism and raising doubts about his potential as a serious actor.
Now, in a candid conversation with Radio Nasha, director Mohit Suri has revealed that Ahaan almost missed his shot at Saiyaara because of those very clips.
'Usne bhut pehle, industry main aane se pehle kuch kiya tha. Meri wife ne dekha tha aur unhe laga bhut endearing hai. Maine dekha nahi tha," Mohit said, addressing the now-infamous mimicry videos. ('He had done something a long time ago, before entering the industry. My wife had seen it and found it very endearing. I hadn't seen it.")
Mohit added that by the time he got involved in the project, Ahaan had already removed the videos. 'People were telling him, 'Do you want to do mimicry or become an actor?'" he shared. The casting process, according to the director, was more complex than expected. 'When I came on board, Adi sir told me, 'I have a guy who's perfect for you,' after reading the script, and he made me meet Ahaan. But Ahaan wasn't going to get the film because of the auditions he was giving at that time."
Even after meeting Ahaan in person, Mohit wasn't convinced. 'I met him, and even in his behaviour, I didn't see anything that matched the character in my film. He is a very sweet, nice boy, and I told Adi, 'He's nothing like what you're saying.'"
But things took a turn when Aditya Chopra made an unusual suggestion. 'Adi said, 'Do one thing — go to dinner with him and tell him he's not getting the role.' That night, I was with him till 3 am. By the end of the night, I saw my character in him," Mohit recalled.
Despite never having watched the SRK mimicry video, Mohit revealed that Ahaan finally sent them to him—but only after wrapping the shoot. 'He's such a wicked guy — after completing the film, he WhatsApped me all his terrible audition videos, saying, 'Look who you've cast'."
Directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Yash Raj Films, Saiyaara stars Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda in lead roles. The film blends romance and music, with a powerful soundtrack from composers like Mithoon, Sachet-Parampara, Vishal Mishra, and Tanishk Bagchi. With strong word-of-mouth and growing social media buzz, the film is already shaping up to be a box-office winner.

Saiyaara Crosses Rs 100 Cr In 4 Days, But THIS Vicky Kaushal Film Hit Century In 3 Days In 2025

Last Updated: Directed by Mohit Suri and starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, Saiyaara collected an estimated Rs 22.50 crore on Day 4. There's no stopping Saiyaara. Even on Monday which is typically a slow day for most releases, the film continued its impressive run at the box office. Directed by Mohit Suri and starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, Saiyaara collected an estimated Rs 22.50 crore on Day 4. This brings its total to Rs 106 crore in just four days, according to The romantic drama released on July 18 and got off to a phenomenal start, collecting Rs 25 crore (approx. $2.9 million) on its opening day in India. According to YRF, nearly 9.75 lakh people flocked to theatres on Day 1, making it the biggest opening day ever for a Hindi film led entirely by debutants. It beat the previous record set by Dhadak, which opened at Rs 8.76 crore in 2018. What makes Saiyaara's feat even more notable is that only one other Hindi film in 2025 has managed to hit the Rs 100 crore mark faster, Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal. The period drama, directed by Laxman Utekar, has been one of the biggest success stories of the year. It earned a staggering Rs 49.03 crore on Sunday alone, closing its opening weekend with Rs 121.43 crore in India. While Chhaava and Saiyaara differ vastly in genre and scale, one being a historical epic, the other a contemporary love story, both have made history in their own right. Importantly, Saiyaara's success stands tall on its own merit. It not only marks a breakout moment for Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, but also sets a new benchmark for romantic films at the box office. It outperformed recent romantic hits like Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (Rs 11.1 crore), Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (Rs 6.7 crore), Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar (Rs 15.73 crore), and Kabir Singh (Rs 20.21 crore) in terms of opening day numbers. The buzz around Saiyaara was strong even before release, with advance bookings crossing Rs 9.39 crore and over 3.8 lakh tickets sold. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh had reported that 1.38 lakh tickets were booked across national chains like PVR INOX and Cinepolis—a record for a debut film in recent memory. With its soaring numbers, stellar word-of-mouth and sold-out shows across metros, Saiyaara is proving to be a cultural and commercial phenomenon. While Chhaava continues to dominate as the highest grosser of 2025, Saiyaara has earned its place in the spotlight, representing a strong, refreshing wave of new talent and storytelling in Bollywood.
