TN to restore 100 tanks in four districts at Rs 111 crore
The initiative will be implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), which focuses on efficient use of water and expanding irrigation coverage.
The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 111.48 crore, with the state government contributing Rs 10.56 crore. The remaining funds are expected from the union government. 'A total of 89 tanks are located in the Madurai region covering Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar districts, while the remaining 11 are in Kallakurichi district under the Chennai region,' a senior WRD official told TNIE.
As per the conditions of the scheme, to get funds from the centre, a government order has been issued declaring that all 100 tanks are free from encroachments. 'WRD officials have inspected and certified that all 100 tanks are encroachment-free,' the official said. Following this, a formal request for central funds has been sent. 'We hope the funds will be sanctioned in the first week of July. Once the funds are sanctioned, we will float the tenders,' the official added.

Kerala Nuns Get Bail In Human Trafficking, Religious Conversion Case In Chhattisgarh
A special NIA court in Chhattisgarh has granted conditional bail to two Kerala nuns and a male companion who were arrested last week on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion. Principal District and Sessions Judge Sirajuddin Qureshi granted bail to Sisters Preethi Merry and Vandana Francis of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI), and Sukaman Mandavi, a tribal youth from the state. CPM leader Brinda Karat told NDTV this is a big victory for tribals and adivasi groups that had countered the allegations. She demanded action against Bajrang Dal and Hindu Vahini for filing false complaints. CPIM MP John Brittas said, "It is a victory of the Constitution. It was a false case against two nuns. Our fight will continue to get the FIR quashed." The three of them were arrested on July 25 at the Durg railway station after a complaint by a local Bajrang Dal functionary alleged they were attempting to traffic and convert three tribal girls. The defense lawyer for the nuns, Amrito Das, had argued that the FIR was "absolutely baseless," and noted that the parents of the girls had given statements affirming that their daughters had been practicing Christianity for several years. So there was no question of forced conversion and also that they were adults being taken for work to Agra and they had said they were going voluntarily, so there was no human trafficking. The bail was granted under several conditions. The accused must surrender their passports and furnish a bond of Rs 50,000 each, with two persons acting as sureties. This development comes after a sessions court in Durg had earlier disposed of their bail applications, citing a lack of jurisdiction under the human trafficking section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and directing them to approach the designated NIA court in Bilaspur. The arrest had triggered widespread protests in Kerala and drew sharp criticism from Church leaders and political parties, including the ruling LDF and the Opposition. The case had also created a rift between the BJP units in Kerala and Chhattisgarh, with Kerala BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar stating that the arrests were a "misunderstanding" and that the Chhattisgarh government would not oppose their bail. Andhra govt deposits Rs 7,000 each to 47 lakh farmers under 'Annadatha Sukhibhava' scheme
PTI Andhra Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu The Andhra Pradesh government-led by N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday deposited Rs 7,000 each to 47 lakh farmers as part of the 'Annadatha Sukhibhava' scheme, which offers Rs 20,000 financial aid to farmers per annum. Launching the Rs 3,174 crore statewide initiative, the CM handed over cheque to two farmers as a symbolic gesture and another Rs 29 crore specific to Darsi constituency, according to a video link shared by the government. Naidu disbursed the first tranche of funds at East Veerayapalem village of Darsi mandal in Prakasam district. Out of the Rs 7,000 credited to lakhs of farmers today, Rs 5,000 came from the southern state while the remaining Rs 2,000 was offered by the central government as part of the PM-Kisan scheme. Clubbing the Centre's contribution of Rs 6,000 under PM-Kisan and the state's contribution of Rs 14,000, the southern state aims to disburse Rs 20,000 per annum to eligible farmers under 'Annadatha Sukhibhava'- 'PM Kisan' scheme in three installments. The NDA government in the state has allocated Rs 2,343 crore for the first installment while the Centre provided Rs 831 crore.'Annadatha Sukhibhava' is a poll promise made by Naidu in the run-up to the 2024 polls and is part of the 'Super Six' set of election promises, which assured three free cooking gas cylinders per annum, Rs 15,000 per annum for every school-going child, Rs 1,500 monthly financial aid for women between 19 and 59 years and others.
