People evicted in Assam may move to Nagaland, warns students' body
A students' body in Nagaland has warned against the possible inward movement of 'alleged illegal immigrants' evicted from government land in Assam.
More than 50,000 people, mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims, have been evicted from reserve forests, wetlands, grazing lands, wastelands, etc., in northeastern and western Assam since June. Resistance to these drives claimed the life of one person in the Goalpara district a few days ago.
On Monday (July 21, 2025), the Western Sümi Students' Union (WSSU) expressed deep concern over the ongoing eviction drive in Assam. Its president, Ikato Khulu, and general secretary, Vitoka N. Rochill, issued a statement, saying such drives are threatening areas inhabited by Nagas along the border with Assam.
'It is alarming that such activities are beginning to infringe upon Nagaland's territory, posing a direct threat to the rightful ownership of our land and the safety and security of its residents. These border communities have lived peacefully for generations and have acted as de facto custodians of our State's boundary,' they said.
Risk of conflict
'It is pertinent to mention that the alleged illegal immigrants reside near Naga-inhabited areas along the Assam-Nagaland border. This situation further heightens the risks of conflict, displacement, and demographic pressure on our vulnerable border communities,' they said.
The WSSU asked the Nagaland government to immediately deploy security forces 'to deter unauthorised actions by external authorities' and ensure 'swift and effective protection of our people.' It also sought steps to prevent a potential influx of illegal immigrants.
'The large-scale evictions, push-backs, and expedited deportations currently underway in Assam will likely trigger displacement-driven movement into Nagaland,' the union stated, resenting the 'slow and inadequate' response of the Nagaland administration to the threat.
Dismantle SoO camps
In neighbouring Manipur, another Naga organisation has asked the Centre to immediately dismantle camps for Kuki extremist outfits located 'in or around Naga ancestral territories' in the State. These groups had signed the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre in 2008.
In a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Foothills Naga Coordination Committee accused the SoO groups of repeatedly violating the terms of the agreement. The committee cited a long list of alleged crimes and violent acts committed by these groups between 2023 and 2025, including extortion, assaults, kidnappings, and the burning of villages.
The committee said the SoO agreement 'has become a sanctuary for armed criminals rather than a tool for peace. 'The continued presence and reported relocation of SoO camps into Naga areas represent a direct threat to communal harmony, constitutional order, and national security,' it stated in the memorandum.
The committee warned that any attempt to impose such camps in Naga areas would be seen as an act of aggression.

‘You were a child': CM Nitish Kumar loses cool Tejashwi in Bihar assembly; defends JDU decision to snap ties with RJD
NEW DELHI: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday lost his cool at Tejashwi Yadav , claiming that he broke the alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal because it "did not perform well" in government. As Tejashwi was speaking on the subject of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, Nitish interrupted his former deputy and reminded him about the chief ministerial tenures of his parents. "When you were young, your father was chief minister for seven years, and your mother was chief minister for seven years. What was the situation then? I went with you for some time, but you were not doing the right thing, so I left you. We (JDU and BJP) have been together from the beginning, and we will stay that way," Nitish said. "What have you done for women? What have you done for Muslims? We have worked for all sections. Do you even know? You were a child. Did anyone dare leave home in Patna after dark?" he added. This exchange came as opposition MLAs donned black shirts in protest against the Election Commission 's exercise. Tejashwi questioned why the voter revision drive was not started right after the Lok Sabha election last year. "We are not opposing the SIR, but the process is not transparent. The Election Commission says they received complaints that people from outside have come as voters here. This drive was carried out in 2003, and it took a year to complete then," the RJD leader said. "Between 2003 and 2025, many elections have been held. Should we then say Nitish Kumar is a fake Chief Minister? All of us who were elected came here with the support of fake voters?" he asked. The poll body's exercise has triggered a major row in poll-bound Bihar, with the opposition alleging that the Election Commission is trying to verify voters' citizenship under the pretext of revising voter rolls. They warn that a large section of people may lose their voting rights due to this drive. More than 52 lakh voters were not found at their registered addresses during the ongoing exercise, the Election Commission has said. This accounts for 6.62 percent of the state's registered voters. Many of them have died, shifted permanently, enrolled as voters at multiple locations, or are untraceable.

Centre okays Market Intervention Price for Totapuri mangoes
Vijayawada: Against the backdrop of falling price of Totapuri variety of mangoes assuming political colour, the Centre has approved Market Intervention Price for the produce which will be a major relief for farmers. The ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare issues orders, approving Price Deficiency Payment (PDP) under Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for Totapuri market mango season 2025-26. Minister of state for rural development and communications, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for approving PDP under MIS. This will cover 1.62 lakh tonne mangoes with Market Intervention Price (MIP) of Rs 1,490.73 per quintal. The Centre and state will pay MIP on a 50:50 basis. The farmers will get direct benefit transfer support. 'This move will safeguard farmers against price crashes, ensure fair returns, and strengthen rural livelihoods,' said Chandra Sekhar. He told media persons in Delhi on Tuesday that the state government has already released Rs 260 crore to pay an extra Rs 4 per kg to Totapuri mango farmers facing a crisis due to a sharp fall in prices. The Centre on Tuesday issued orders to reimburse Rs 130 crore out of Rs 260 crore announced by the state government. Civil aviation minister K Ram Mohan Naidu, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and state agriculture minister K Atchannaidu had requested the Centre in this regard. Chandra Sekhar said that for the first time, the Centre has announced MIS for mangoes. He said a huge drop in the market price of Totapuri mango this year caused huge losses to farmers. He hoped that the Centre would continue the support under MIS in future, if necessary. The state government last week permitted the Director of Horticulture and Sericulture (DoH and S) to procure 6.5 lakh tonnes of the Totapuri variety for the current season to provide the growers a remunerative price. This will ensure a minimum procurement price of Rs 12 per kg. While pulp processing companies are contributing Rs 8 per kg, the government is providing the remaining Rs 4. The move is expected to help the farmers in sustaining mango cultivation in the combined Chittoor district and preventing distress sales.
