The maximum security prison where Bryan Kohberger is likely to die after he escaped death penalty with guilty plea

is likely to spend the remainder of his days inside Idaho Maximum Security Institution after he pleaded guilty to four counts of murder.
The criminology PhD student struck a deal with prosecutors in which he admitted to killing Ethan Chapin, 20, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Madison Mogen, 21, in their home as they slept in November 2022.
The deal ensures he avoids the death penalty, and will instead spend the rest of his life in prison without any opportunity for parole or to appeal the punishment.
He is likely to be transferred out of maximum security at Ada County jail and into Idaho Maximum Security Institution after his sentencing hearing on July 23.
The prison, which has been open since 1989, is home to the state's 'most disruptive male residents' and violent offenders, according to the facility's website.
The double perimeter fence surrounding the prison is reinforced with razor wire and an electronic detection system, along with a 24 hour armed patrol to ensure prisoners cannot escape.
It holds a capacity if 549 inmates at any given time, including a dedicated section for mental health offenders.
The prison offers restrictive housing beds, disciplinary detention and is the state's death row facility.
It is situated in Kuna, Idaho - part of the greater Boise region and a s ix-hour flight away from his family, who live on the other side of the country in Pennsylvania.
Notorious triple murderer Chad Daybell is one of eight prisoners on death row living in the facility.
Daybell murdered his first wife Tamm y, along with the two children of his second wife, Lori Vallow.
Goncalves' family, who are distraught about Kohberger's plea deal, expressed concerns earlier this week that he will capitalize on his crime by writing a book and chatting publicly about the horror mass-stabbing now that he's been spared death.
'We have a killer who wants a show, and they just gave him one,' Kaylee's father Steve said of the former criminology student.
Kohberger's team contacted prosecutors to ask about a plea deal last week as his defense - including claims of an 'alternate perpetrator' - fell apart.
He spoke calmly during his plea hearing Wednesday, answering 'yes' as he was asked plainly whether he murdered the four students.
Investigators had long claimed that Kohberger broke into the off-campus home and stabbed to death Mogen and Goncalves, before then killing Kernodle and Chapin.
Kohberger's apartment and office were scrubbed clean when investigators searched them, and his car had been 'pretty much disassembled internally', prosecuting attorney Bill Thompson told the plea hearing Wednesday.
He also changed his car registration to Washington State after the four killings.
FBI agents were able to link Kohberger to the killings after collecting DNA samples from the garbage outside his parents' Pennsylvania home, where he was living at the time.
Investigators determined that DNA left on a Q-Tip belonged to the father of the person who left DNA on the knife sheath found at the crime scene.
'The defendant has studied crime,' Thompson told the court. 'In fact, he did a detailed paper on crime scene processing when he was working on his PhD, and he had that knowledge skillset.'
Judge Steven Hippler accepted Kohberger's plea and said he will be sentenced at Ada County Court on July 23 at 9am local time (11am EST).
'The trial will be vacated and the jury commissioner will get words to those who were summoned that they won't be required to attend,' Hippler added.
Documents in the court file won't be unsealed until after sentencing.

The two legal masterstrokes pulled by Diddy's defense team...and the prosecutors' fatal mistake

Sean ' Diddy ' Combs' star defense team saved him from life in prison by keeping him from the stand and presenting a simple case to the jury - while prosecutors failed by focusing too much on the sleazy details, according to legal experts. The music mogul, 55, was acquitted Wednesday of sex trafficking and racketeering charges and only convicted of lesser prostitution-related offenses. Alan Dershowitz, who was part of OJ Simpson 's 'dream team' of lawyers in the infamous murder trial, told Fox News Digital that Diddy's attorneys made the right move by not having the mogul take the stand. 'Ultimately, the smart decision was not putting OJ on the witness stand,' he said of the team of lawyers led by Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos. 'The smart decision here was not putting Combs on the witness stand. The difference is we want a complete victory. They got a partial victory, but an almost complete victory, so I commend them for excellent work.' The defense has also been praised for presenting a simple case to the jury from the beginning, arguing that Diddy, as was shown in various evidence, is a domestic abuser and drug user, but not a sex-trafficker or the head of a criminal organization. 'Trials always come down to a battle of storytelling,' former federal prosecutor Moira Penza told the Wall Street Journal. 'I think we saw the defense had a clear narrative that was simple to understand.' Geragos, the daughter of prominent lawyer Mark Geragos, repeatedly reminded the jury that Diddy was 'not charged with being a jerk. He's charged with running a racketeering enterprise.' During closing arguments, Agnifilo told the court: 'We own the domestic violence... We own it.' Meanwhile experts say prosecutors relied too heavily on the lurid details of Diddy's sex life and the now-infamous 'freak offs' in an apparent bid to turn jurors against the star. The state focused on the huge amount of baby oil and lubricant that Diddy kept in his homes for the sex marathons. They also showed the jury video of Diddy's alleged victims having sex with male escorts. While shocking, the evidence itself was not criminal in nature without the coercion aspect of the allegations. Defense lawyers were able to credibly insist the freak-offs were consensual thanks to texts sent by alleged 'victims' displaying enthusiasm for the sex events. 'I think there is a belief that you can make the defendant so distasteful that it's going to lead a jury to convict on something other than the facts and evidence,' former federal prosecutor Artie McConnell told the WSJ. 'In my experience that rarely happens.' Diddy dropped to his knees and prayed in the courtroom after he was acquitted Wednesday of sex trafficking and racketeering charges that could have put one of hip-hop's celebrated figures behind bars for life. Agnifilo called the verdict a 'great victory' and said the jury 'got the situation right — or certainly right enough' as he stood outside Manhattan federal court at a stand of microphones. 'Today is a victory of all victories.' The mixed verdict capped a sordid legal odyssey that shattered Diddy's affable 'Puff Daddy' image and derailed his career as a Grammy-winning artist and music executive, fashion entrepreneur, brand ambassador and reality TV star. 'I'll see you when I get out,' Combs told family members including his mother and children just before leaving the courtroom to return to jail. 'We're going to get through this.' Diddy stands convicted of two counts of a crime — transportation to engage in prostitution — that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. But jurors cleared him of three charges, two of which carried a mandatory 15 years and a maximum of life. He was convicted of flying people around the country, including his girlfriends and male sex workers, to engage in sexual encounters, a felony violation of the federal Mann Act. Janice Combs, mother of Sean 'Diddy' Combs, and other family members depart federal court after verdicts were announced during Sean Combs' sex trafficking and racketeering trial at Manhattan Federal Court His defense lawyers said that under federal sentencing guidelines, he would likely face about two years in prison. Prosecutors, citing Diddy's violence and other factors, said the guidelines would call for at least four to five years. Locked up since his September arrest, Diddy has already served nine months. 'We fight on and we're going to win,' Agnifilo said. 'And we're not going to stop until he walks out of prison a free man to his family.'

Two teenagers appear in court charged with murder of ‘loving father'

Two teenage boys have appeared in court charged with the murder of a 'loving father' who was stabbed in south Wales. The boys, aged 16 and 17 – who cannot be named for legal reasons, were remanded into youth detention at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Thursday. They are charged with the murder of married father-of-one Kamran Aman, who died in Barry Road, Barry, just before midnight on Monday. The boys, who are both from Llantwit Major, appeared separately in court. Head magistrate Patricia Blackwell said: 'The charges which you face are so serious that your case must now be sent to crown court. 'You will be remanded to youth detention until your appearance at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday.' Mr Aman's family released a tribute on Wednesday evening, saying they mourned his loss with 'profound sorrow'. 'A devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished son, brother, uncle and loyal friend, Kamran was the heart of his family and loved within his community,' they said. 'Known for his generous spirit and kind heart, Kamran brought warmth and strength to everyone he met. 'His absence leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of all who knew him. 'As we grieve this unimaginable loss, we also honour and celebrate the life he lived and the impact he made. 'May his memory be a blessing.' Detective Superintendent Mark O'Shea, from the Major Crime Investigation Team, previously said the force was not looking for anyone else in connection with Mr Aman's death.
