2025 Hall of Fame Game: Omarion Hampton Headlines Things To Watch In Chargers-Lions
Two teams that have not played in the Hall of Fame Game in over three decades will face off when the Detroit Lions "host" the Los Angeles Chargers at Canton's Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium on Thursday, officially kicking off the preseason.
The Chargers were selected to play in the game for the first time since 1994 to honor tight end Antonio Gates – the all-time NFL leader in touchdown receptions by a tight end (116) – and one of four players who will be enshrined in the Hall on Saturday, along with Eric Allen, Jared Allen and Sterling Sharpe. The Lions last played in the Hall of Fame game in 1991.
Per usual, both teams will hold out frontline players to avoid potential injuries, which means Justin Herbert, Ladd McConkey and Derwin James are among those who won't play for the Chargers. Lions head coach Dan Campbell also said his starters won't play, which means foundational players like Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Aidan Hutchinson will be watching from the sideline for Detroit.
However, there are still some younger players who will receive some game action this week. Specifically, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said rookie first-round draft pick Omarion Hampton will get some snaps. And former first-round pick Trey Lance is expected to make the start at quarterback for the Bolts with Herbert out.
Here's a closer look at what to expect from each team in this one.
With free agent signee running back Najee Harris dealing with a superficial eye injury suffered in a fireworks accident and out indefinitely, the Chargers need to get a closer look at Hampton and how he fits into offensive coordinator Greg Roman's run-first scheme. Hampton has looked physical and explosive in practice, but this will be the first time he faces a defense that can bring him to the ground.
Along with Hampton, Roman will get a closer look at three rookie pass catchers who have been impressive so far during camp in receivers Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith, plus tight end Oronde Gadsden. With Mike Williams unexpectedly retiring, the Chargers need these three to step up and make an immediate impact.
Harbaugh has repeatedly said players and coaches must rise to the level of Herbert for the Chargers to make a deep playoff run, and that starts with these three rookies.
With Goff out, the Lions get a chance to take a closer look at University of Tennessee product Hooker. Selected in the third round of the 2023 draft, Hooker has yet to fully grow into his vast potential and now has competition for the No. 2 job with veteran journeyman Kyle Allen.
Along with Hooker's development, all eyes will be on how Campbell acclimates to new offensive coordinator John Morton and defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. With innovative offensive coordinator Ben Johnson now the head coach for the Chicago Bears and fiery defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn leading his former team with the New York Jets, Campbell lost a significant amount of brain power in his coaching room.
Thursday will be the first opportunity for NFL observers to see how well Campbell has done in replacing those big brains in his locker room, along with how his players are adjusting to the new personalities on the sidelines.

DALLAS (AP) — Kelsey Mitchell had 23 points, Aliyah Boston and Natasha Howard had double-doubles and the Indiana Fever beat the Dallas Wings 88-78 on Friday night for their season-high fourth-straight win despite playing without Caitlin Clark for the sixth straight game. The game was moved to American Airlines Center in anticipation of a Clark-Paige Bueckers showdown but Clark missed her 15th game overall and the Fever improved to 8-7 without her. Bueckers did not disappoint the crowd of 17,857 — second-highest in Dallas history — with 22 points, her 12th 20-point game as she increased her WNBA record for double-figure games to start a career to 23 games. Boston had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Howard 11 points and a career-high tying 16 rebounds and both had five assists for the Fever (16-12), who are 3-0 against the Wings. Aari McDonald also had 12 points. Bueckers was the only player in double figures for the Wings (8-21). Arike Ogunbowale had eight points and did not play in the fourth quarter. Indiana, which tied a season high with 19 turnovers, had 12 3-pointers while Dallas didn't hit one until the fourth quarter and finished 2 for 15. The Wings went 24 for 25 from the foul line for a 14-point advantage but the Fever were a plus-14 on the boards, plus-10 on the offensive end. With a 9-0 burst in the second quarter the Fever pulled away from a 22-22 tie at the end of the first quarter to lead 48-42 at the half. The Fever upped the lead to 70-57 after three quarters. Dallas cut it to 75-69 in the middle of the fourth quarter but Indiana scored the next five to all but seal it. ___ AP WNBA:

Roman Anthony's walk-off single lifts Red Sox over Astros 2-1 in 10 innings
BOSTON (AP) — Roman Anthony lined a fly ball over drawn-in center fielder Chas McCormick's head to score the automatic runner from third, and the Boston Red Sox rallied in the 10th inning to beat the new-look Houston Astros 2-1 on Friday night. Boston trailed 1-0 on Christian Walker's second-inning home run before tying it in the seventh on Wilyer Abreu's sacrifice fly. With Abreu starting the bottom of the 10th on second base, Ceddanne Rafaela tried unsuccessfully to bunt him to third before swinging away -- and hitting the ball just a few feet in front of the plate. Catcher Yanier Diaz tried to get Abreu at third, but his throw was late. Anthony lined a 2-2 pitch to center. McCormick ran after it and it flew just beyond his glove for what was scored as a walk-off single. Greg Weissert (4-3) pitched a perfect 10th for the win as the Red Sox won for the fifth time in six games to reach a season-high nine games above .500. Bennett Sousa (5-1) failed to get an out in picking up his first career loss. Christian Walker homered, Hunter Brown took a shutout into the seventh inning and Jeremy Peña had three hits for Houston. Trade deadline acquisition Jesús Sánchez had two hits and Carlos Correa went hitless in his return to the team that picked him No. 1 overall in 2012 and re-acquired on Thursday the AL West-leading Astros loaded up in their quest for a ninth straight postseason appearance. Key moment In the top of the 10th, the Astros had a runner on third with one out when Mauricio Dubón hit a grounder to short and Trevor Story threw home to keep the go-ahead run from scoring. Key stat Bregman, who played his first nine years in Houston, singled in each of his first two career at-bats against the Astros. Up next Red Sox RHP Walker Buehler (6-6) will face Astros LHP Colton Gordon (4-3) on Saturday. ___ AP MLB:
