Flight attendants on Alaska Airlines door plug flight sue Boeing

The flight attendants on board Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, where the door plug blew out in January 2024, are now suing Boeing, claiming they "sustained injuries of a personal, permanent, and pecuniary nature," according to the complaints. Four attendants working the flight -- Adam Fisher, Michelle Hughes, Steven Maller, and Christine Vasconcellos -- claimed in four separate suits that, "As a direct and proximate result of the ejection of the door plug and the resulting decompression, Plaintiff sustained physical and mental injuries, severe emotional distress, and other damages of a personal and pecuniary nature." "This act of negligence caused both physical and mental damages, which profoundly impaired my personal and professional life. It also resulted in many challenges to return to my dream job that I had proudly made my career," Hughes said in a statement. I'm committed to seeking justice, accountability and making the sky a safe place." Tracy Brammeier, who represents the flight attendants, said in a statement to ABC: "When the door plug blew off the aircraft on flight 1282, each of the four flight attendants acted courageously, following their training and putting their passengers' safety first while fearing for their lives. They deserve to be wholly compensated for this life-altering, traumatic experience caused by Boeing's negligence in the 737 MAX production process." The lawsuits were filed in King County Superior Court in Seattle, Washington. Boeing declined to comment on the suit. The company has repeatedly said that it's supported the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation into the incident "in the transparent and proactive fashion we have supported all regulatory inquiries into this accident." Passengers captured footage showing a hole where the door plug came loose. The plane safely made an emergency landing and no one was seriously injured in the incident.

Beyond Pinot Noir: The Oregon Wines You Need to Know About

Some years ago I was invited to a dinner party for Oregon natives in suburban New York. The Oregon-born host had erroneously assumed I was Oregonian, because, months earlier, I'd brought a bottle of Oregon Chardonnay to a dinner we'd both attended. It wasn't a totally outlandish conclusion; Oregon Chardonnay was still fairly obscure outside the Beaver State back then. Happily, such wines are much easier to find today along with Oregon whites like Pinot Gris, Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Pinot Noir has long been the state's signature grape. Accounting for 58% of Oregon's total grape production in 2024, it's still far and away the most planted grape, too, with 28,264 planted acres devoted to it. Far behind in second place, Pinot Gris accounts for just 6,483 acres under vine—though that number is nearly double what it was in 2014. Third-place grape Chardonnay is also gaining, at 3,482 acres as of 2024, more than twice what it was a decade prior. From Chenin Blanc to Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, Albariño and Riesling, other white grapes, too, are redefining winemaking in Oregon.

Al Landry, father of Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, dies

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry's father, Al James Landry, died Wednesday, July 30, 2025, according to a social media post from the governor. (John Ballance/The Advocate, Pool) Gov. Jeff Landry announced on social media that his father, St. Martin Parish architect and business owner Al James Landry, died Wednesday. In his remembrance, the governor lamented his loss while noting the death of his mother, Edna Bienvenu Landry, in 2019. 'Today that angel has returned to scoop her soulmate from this wretched Earth … for my father, who was the quiet, silent foundation, who provided a steady hand to all of her acts of mercy, her outpouring of kindness, caring, and compassion, has waited in anguish for this day to come,' Gov. Landry wrote. 'For his loss of her on Earth has been unbearable, he has been like a ship without no rudder or compass … for she was his Northern Star.' Al and Edna Landry married on Jan. 23, 1970, according to her obituary. In addition to the governor, the couple is survived by a daughter, Becki, sons Benjamin and Al Jr., and seven grandchildren. Funeral arrangements for Al Landry were not immediately available. Solve the daily Crossword
