Perak Customs seize smuggled drugs, some hidden in air mattresses, worth nearly RM1m in Selangor
Its director Mohd Nadzri Arifin said in the 2.45pm raid on June 5, the Customs Department uncovered a large drug smuggling attempt involving nearly 10 kilograms of cannabis flowers concealed in courier parcels.
'The raid involved collaboration with officers from the Customs Headquarters Narcotics Branch and the Ipoh Enforcement Division.
'During the inspection of a suspicious parcel, officers discovered eight plastic packages containing dried plant materials believed to be cannabis flowers weighing approximately 9,858 grams,' he said in a press conference at the Perak Customs Department headquarters here.
He said authorities estimated the street value of the drugs to be RM966,084.
Mohd Nadzri said preliminary investigations revealed that the drugs were intended to be smuggled abroad, specifically to the United Kingdom, via courier services.
'The dried cannabis was hidden inside air mattress and inflatable pool boxes to avoid detection,' he said.
He added the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.
He said no arrests were made in the raid and noted that the sender made a false declaration and failed to obtain the required permits.
He added that investigations are ongoing to identify the individuals or syndicate behind the attempted smuggling.

PETALING JAYA : An oil and gas consultant in Perak lost over RM2.7 million to a non-existent investment scheme advertised on a website. Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said the 37-year-old man lodged a report on June 29 at the Ipoh police headquarters, claiming he had been scammed through an online investment platform known as 'Nova 88'. He said preliminary investigations found the victim had registered an account on the website in April 2023 through a contact, now the main suspect, whom he had met via WhatsApp. The victim made an initial deposit of RM30,000 and was then given a user ID and password to monitor the supposed investment. 'Between Jan 5, 2024, and May 20, 2025, the victim made 136 fund transfers to seven different accounts, totalling RM2,701,687. 'The funds came from his savings and contributions from family members,' Bernama reported Noor Hisam as saying. He said the victim realised he had been duped when each attempt to withdraw his purported profits required additional payments. To date, he has been unable to access any returns, with the suspect having offered numerous excuses before eventually becoming unreachable. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Noor Hisam advised the public to avoid any form of investment offered through unlicensed, unregistered or unregulated websites. 'Such investments carry high risks and can lead to significant financial losses. Always verify the background of any investment company with recognised authorities such as Bank Negara Malaysia or the Securities Commission,' he said.

Intellectually disabled teen charged with murder

(Bernama pic) TANAH MERAH : A teenager with intellectual disability was charged in the magistrates' court here today with the murder of a senior citizen. Tuan Izmal Firdaus Tuan Muda, 18, nodded after the charge was read to him before magistrate Tun Faez Fikhrie. No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. He was charged with murdering Shamsudin Mohamed, 60, at the side of the road next to a grocery store in Kampung Buluh, Gual Ipoh, here between 6pm and 6.30pm on June 19. The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of not less than 30 to 40 years and a minimum whipping of 12 strokes, upon conviction. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Siti Hajar Mazlan while the accused was unrepresented. The court set Sept 2 for mention of the case.

Stepfather, brother plead guilty to raping 15-year-old girl

(Reuters pic) PETALING JAYA : A teenage girl's stepfather and biological brother pleaded guilty in the Baling sessions court to raping her, while her mother was fined RM2,000 in court today for failing to report the offence. Harian Metro reported that all of the accused pleaded guilty after the charges were read before judge Najwa Che Mat. The victim's stepfather, 49, who works as a security guard, was charged with raping the 15-year-old victim in a house in Pulai, Baling, Kedah, around 4pm on June 24. The charge was under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which provides for eight to 30 years' imprisonment and no less than 10 strokes of the cane if convicted. The court granted the stepfather bail of RM30,000 and set Aug 10 as the date for submission of the victim's medical report. The girl's stepfather also pleaded guilty to a separate charge of possessing pornographic pictures and videos in his Vivo Y66 phone at the Baling police headquarters on June 27 at 3.40pm. He was charged under Section 292(a) of the Penal Code, which provides for up to three years' imprisonment, a fine or both. The court sentenced the stepfather to 15 months in prison from the date of his arrest on this charge. Meanwhile, the victim's brother, 17, was also charged under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code with raping his sister in the same house, around 10am, on June 15, 2025. The judge set Oct 30 for the submission of a conduct report, and granted the boy bail of RM4,000. According to the facts of the case, the victim was raped by her stepfather and brother since she was 11 years old. At the same time, the victim's biological mother, 45, was charged with failing to report the sexual offence against her daughter to the police, despite having reasonable grounds to believe it had occurred. The charge against her was under Section 19 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 upon conviction. The court imposed a fine of RM2,000 on her, or eight months' imprisonment if she fails to pay the fine. The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Amirul Halimi Salleh, while the accused were represented by lawyer Masniah Dolah from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
