As someone with a bunch of doctors in my family, I'll be the first to say it: doctors truly have seen it all. They've got some wild stories, and they're also able to debunk a bunch of societal health myths everyone believes. So recently, we asked the medical professionals of the BuzzFeed Community: "What's one supposedly 'normal' thing you've stopped doing after realizing how dangerous it actually is?" and oh boy, they shared some fascinating answers. So here's what people said: "Contact lenses! If you wear them when sleeping, swimming, or if you wash them in normal water, there is a chance of going blind." "I am a registered nurse working in gastroenterology for over 30 years. It is very common for people to come into the ER for a 'food bolus' — food has become stuck in their esophagus preventing anything from going down or coming up. This is potentially life-threatening. It's often caused by eating too fast and not chewing food adequately. Sometimes there's a narrowing in the esophagus. But usually the person is drunk, gobbling their food, or even have no teeth or ill-fitting dentures. This is miserable for the patient, the nurse, the doctor — everyone. I try to be cognizant of the potential for having a food impaction, eating slowly, chewing, and definitely making sure one bite has gone completely down before taking another." "Jumping/stepping down from any height without bracing with your arms if you're over the age of 20.
