PM Anwar stresses fair development and welfare in national agenda

MUAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed that Malaysia's development agenda must not compromise the rights and welfare of its people. Speaking at the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 Campaign at Dataran Tanjung Emas, he emphasised justice and holistic balance as core principles. 'Let's not develop while destructing. We construct buildings, industries, technologies, economic zones... but the people are oppressed, neglected. This is not true development,' Anwar said. He stressed that sustainable economic growth must benefit all segments of society, not just the wealthy. Anwar cited the Quranic principle of *ummatan wasatan* (balanced nation), which integrates justice in faith, knowledge, and material well-being. He also called for fair fiscal policies, including progressive taxation targeting high-income earners and profitable corporations rather than burdening the poor. 'We cannot tax the poor. If schools need to be repaired, where must the money come from? We impose taxes on the rich and companies making millions in profits,' he said. He urged major corporations like Petronas, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, and Maybank to align their wage policies with their profits. 'If a company makes RM1 million profit, but pays its workers RM1,500... how can? We have already raised the minimum wage from RM1,200 to RM1,500, and now to RM1,700. We will continue to do so gradually,' Anwar added. The event was attended by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, and other senior officials. Anwar reiterated that national independence carries the responsibility of equitable wealth distribution, ensuring prosperity for all Malaysians. - Bernama

Bursa Review: Bursa Malaysia Ends Mixed As Trade Jitters Offset Fiscal Boost

Bursa Malaysia ended the week of July 21 on a mixed note as investors weighed positive domestic economic data and government fiscal support against lingering concerns over US-Malaysia trade tensions. The benchmark FBM KLCI hovered in a narrow range between 1,524 and 1,540 throughout the week, reflecting cautious investor sentiment. It opened on July 21 at 1,524.59, slipping slightly as profit-taking activity followed the prior week's rally. Broad-based losses in mid- and small-cap counters, along with weaker regional cues, pressured the broader market. Investor appetite remained subdued early in the week, despite Malaysia's stronger-than-expected second-quarter GDP growth of 4.5%, beating market forecasts of 4.2%. Optimism picked up mid-week on the back of positive Wall Street earnings and selective foreign inflows into blue-chip stocks. On July 24, the KLCI surged 0.69% to close at a weekly high of 1,540.32, buoyed by the government's latest fiscal measures, including cash handouts, fuel subsidies and a freeze on toll hikes aimed at easing the cost of living. The policy support sparked renewed buying interest in consumer-related and construction-linked stocks. However, gains were pared on July 25 as investors turned cautious ahead of the weekend, with uncertainty looming over potential US tariff adjustments affecting Malaysian exports. The KLCI retreated 0.43% to settle at 1,533.76, as heavyweights such as Maybank, Public Bank and TNB booked modest losses. Market breadth was mixed throughout the week. Among the most actively traded stocks was NexG Bhd, which posted high volumes driven by speculative interest. Meanwhile, Sunway Construction Group Bhd saw sharp losses early in the week on heavy institutional selling, though bargain hunting helped stabilize selected counters later in the week. Turnover remained moderate, averaging RM2.2-RM2.3 billion daily, as investors largely stayed on the sidelines awaiting greater clarity on global trade developments and the upcoming corporate earnings season. Looking ahead, analysts expect the FBM KLCI to continue consolidating in the near term. Related

Maybank gets cease and desist order against NUBE

Maybank took exception to NUBE's approach and referred a trade dispute which was later referred to the Industrial Court for adjudication. (Facebook pic) KUALA LUMPUR : A leading commercial bank has obtained a cease and desist order from the Industrial Court to restrain a union from commenting on a case of alleged sexual harassment, pending the outcome of a trade dispute between them. Court chairman Andersen Ong said it was just and necessary to grant the order to Malayan Banking Bhd after considering the actions of the National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) and the provisions of the Industrial Relations Act (IRA) 1967. NUBE is barred from issuing statements to the press or posting them on its website and social media, as well as from organising pickets. 'Parties are to comply with the order forthwith, failing which the court may make further orders as it deems fit and appropriate in the circumstances,' Ong said in the interim award released last week. The trade dispute stemmed from allegations of sexual harassment raised by a former employee against her colleague. The incident was addressed in 2021 but resurfaced in 2024 during an unrelated formal grievance process. Although no formal complaint was lodged in respect of the earlier allegation of sexual harassment, it became the subject of escalating public campaigns and protests by NUBE. Maybank took exception to NUBE's approach and referred a trade dispute which was later referred to the Industrial Court for adjudication. Despite the referral to court, NUBE continued to publish statements and organise pickets related to the allegation of sexual harassment. In response, the bank applied for interim relief under the IRA, seeking an order that NUBE cease and desist from such conduct. Ong said although the court did not possess injunctive powers akin to a civil court, it was empowered to issue interim or ancillary orders to regulate the conduct of parties during ongoing proceedings. He said the objective of such orders was to preserve the status quo, prevent further escalation, and ensure the orderly administration of justice. Ong said the court had the statutory power to regulate processes under the IRA, which includes ensuring that the proceedings before it are not undermined by prejudicial public statements, misinformation, or acts that may affect the administration of justice. He said while trade unions are entitled to represent members and engage in collective action, these rights are not unfettered. Ong said the making of disparaging, unfounded, or defamatory remarks against the employer on social media platforms during picketing fell outside the legitimate scope of trade union activities. He said the court would be rendered 'a toothless tiger' if it could not restrain conduct that jeopardised its proceedings once a matter had been referred. Janice Anne Leo, Chong Jen Hui, and Adrienne Sena appeared for the bank while Ravi Nekoo and Arvinkumar Mohan represented NUBE.
