SAPP Supreme Council member cum Vice Youth Chief, lawyer Yong Yit Jee, dismissed claims by Upko and PBRS that they are securing Sabah's rights.

He pointed to the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA1974) and Territorial Sea Act 2012 (TSA2012) as laws that have undermined Sabah and Sarawak's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). The criticism comes as Sabah NGO Sabar mounts a legal challenge against TSA2012, a move the Sabah Chief Minister has supported, stating the State does not recognise the law. 'Sarawak sues, while Sabah PH-BN settles for handshakes and empty promises,' Yong said, questioning the two parties' impact where they boast about resolving 13 MA63 issues. He called out Upko's Federal minister, Datuk Ewon Benedick, for failing to amend PDA1974 or deliver the promised 40 per cent revenue formula by July 2024. 'It is now May 2025, where is the formula? Where is our money?' Yong said, referring to Ewon's September 2023 announcement. SAPP, which has long opposed PDA1974, TSA2012 and the loss of oil-rich Blocks L and M to Brunei, is now demanding Sabah PH-BN clarify its stance. 'The enemy used three unmanned aerial vehicles,' the administration said on the Telegram messaging app. It added that 'no critical' damage was recorded. Reuters could not independently verify the Russian report. The report comes a day after the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, said that it had heard hundreds of rounds of small arms fire late on Saturday at the plant. Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia plant in the first weeks of Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Each side regularly accuses the other of firing or taking other actions that could trigger a nuclear accident. The station, Europe's biggest nuclear power plant, is not operating but still requires power to keep its nuclear fuel cool. The plant's Russia-installed management said in its statement that the station 'continues to operate normally, with all necessary safety precautions in place.'

Decision on Sabah's 40 pct revenue claim expected by September - Fadillah

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the Sabah government had submitted proposed solutions regarding the long-standing 40 per cent revenue claim during a special meeting of the Technical Committee under the MA63 Implementation Action Council (MTPMA63), held at Menara Kinabalu. Fadillah, who also chairs the committee, said that each proposed solution would be presented to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ahead of the next MTPMA63 meeting, scheduled for Sept 12 in Kuala Lumpur. 'At that meeting, we will determine the appropriate course of action, whether an interim solution or otherwise, as we must also consider the ongoing court case, filed by the Sabah Law Society, regarding the 40 per cent revenue claim,' he said. 'In legal terms, there are limitations that prevent us from finalising a solution without a decision from the court. However, what we are seeking is a resolution outside the court's jurisdiction,' he told reporters after chairing the committee meeting at Menara Kinabalu, here today. A High Court here has fixed August 7 for e-review of a judicial review brought by SLS to get declaration on 40 percent entitlement grant for Sabah which allegedly had not been reviewed for 48 years since 1974. The meeting was also attended by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan; and Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. Meanwhile, Jeffrey said that the special meeting was productive, and that the Sabah government had submitted proposals concerning the 40 per cent revenue claim, which will be reviewed by the MTPMA63. Meanwhile, Fadillah paid a courtesy call on the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu here yesterday. In a post on his official Facebook page, Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said it was his first courtesy call on Tun Musa since his appointment as the 11th Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah on Jan 1. 'The visit is a gesture of respect, as I have not had the opportunity to pay a courtesy call on Tuan Yang Terutama Tun and to brief him on the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation's (PETRA) plans to assist Sabah in the energy and water sectors,' he said. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, he also touched on the Special Meeting of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 Implementation Action Council Technical Committee with the Sabah government, as well as the implementation of the two-day PETRA Squad programme startingn today. 'Tuan Yang Terutama Tun expressed his wish for me to discuss further with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor ways to develop the state, enabling the people of Sabah to enjoy its benefits and contribute to its progress,' he said.

Mapping Sabah's grassroots innovations to inclusive and sustainable futures

THE demand for innovation is global, and particularly in the context of sustainable development goals. Grassroots innovation is becoming a powerful tool in tackling local challenges across Southeast Asia. In countries like India, innovation ecosystems have grown significantly and in 2023 alone over 75,000 patents were granted. Vietnam and Thailand are also investing in rural innovations which promote sustainability, for example, solar energy projects which provide reliable power to local communities. For instance, Thailand has built solar microgrids in rural areas, allowing villages to produce and control their own electricity. Small scale hydropower projects have been deployed in remote areas in Indonesia to supply renewable energy to support local economies. These examples show how improved infrastructure can support community driven solutions that can promote both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
