Yoane Wissa wants to play for Newcastle United, but refuses to continue with Brentford.

Getty Images Press reports close to Newcastle United have revealed that the English club is close to signing one of the Premier League's most prominent attacking players, Yoane Wissa, who plays as a striker. In a dramatic development, Daily Mail's Craig Hope reveals Yoane Wissa has officially severed ties with Brentford, declaring he won't represent the club again. The Congolese attacker's forceful stance delivers a significant advantage to Newcastle United, who have been persistently pursuing the 28-year-old forward. Since arriving at the Community Stadium in 2021, Wissa's career trajectory has shown remarkable progression. Initially struggling to cement a starting role, the versatile attacker has transformed into one of Thomas Frank's most reliable performers in recent seasons, making his current standoff with the Bees particularly noteworthy. This bold move from Wissa accelerates Newcastle's long-standing interest, potentially paving the way for a swift resolution to the transfer saga as the Magpies look to bolster their attacking options. Newcastle are actively pursuing attacking reinforcements, with Yoane Wissa emerging as their prime target. The Congolese forward represents both short-term depth and potential long-term solution, capable of deputizing for Alexander Isak or potentially replacing him should the Swede depart. Sources indicate advanced negotiations on personal terms with the 28-year-old, who has formally requested his Brentford exit. Wissa claims the club previously agreed to sanction his departure at a reasonable fee - a promise he now expects them to honor. While Brentford recognize their player's desire to join Newcastle, talks have stalled over the £50m+ valuation. With the deal at an impasse, Newcastle have begun exploring backup options as contingency planning. The situation remains fluid, but Wissa's public stance has undeniably strengthened Newcastle's bargaining position.

Man Utd's Hojlund conundrum

There were a couple of moments in the first-half of last night's game against West Ham which summed up Rasmus Hojlund. In the first, he showed strength, speed and aggression to get himself into a shooting position and smashed a shot against the outside of the post. The second was far easier but he ballooned the effort over the bar, much to the frustration of head coach Ruben Amorim. With rumours around Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins in particular refusing to die down, United face a stark choice. Do they risk heading into the meat of the season with Hojlund as their number one striker, knowing Joshua Zirkzee and 18-year-old Chido Obi are the back ups if Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha are used as number 10s? Or, do they head back into the transfer market and try to prise Watkins out of Villa – or Jean Philippe Mateta from Crystal Palace, although the chatter around him is nowhere near as strong - or abandon their policy of recruiting from the Premier League to get someone else? There is certainly something about Hojlund – probably not £72m-worth, which is what United paid for him – but it is easy to see him scoring goals on a regular basis if he was fully confident. But can Amorim afford to wait?

'Normal to have to build your confidence'

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot says pre-season wins can "build confidence" for upcoming campaign. The Red Devils came out 2-1 winners over West Ham United in their opening game of the Premier League Summer Series in the United States on Saturday, with captain Bruno Fernandes netting twice. This preparation for the new campaign is the first time boss Ruben Amorim has had the chance to have a pre-season with the team after arriving in November. Speaking after the game at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Dalot said: "It's been good [having pre-season with Amorim]. We train a lot, we train hard. Today you saw also what kind of intensity we can bring. "I think we're still at the beginning. We have a lot more potential to show in that aspect, but I think for today it was good intensity and a good performance. "Last season was not good enough, we know that, and now we have to find a way to improve. I think we've made some good signings already. You saw already Matheus [Cunha], he can bring a lot to the team. "I like the mentality of us today, high pressing, a lot of intensity." After just 11 league wins and a 15th-place finish, 2024-25 was regarded as the club's worst campaign since the 1973-74 relegation season and Amorim and his players will know they need to do better this time around. "After a season like that, it's normal to have to build your confidence," Dalot added. "That's why I think a win like today is really important. I think with winning, you become more confident. You start to believe more in what you're doing. "[This win] was a good example of what we can show, and hopefully with this the group becomes even better."
