TN to implement ‘Pa'-shaped seating arrangement

Time of Indiaa day ago
Chennai: Inspired by the Malayalam film 'Sthanarthi Sreekuttan', Tamil Nadu school education department has decided to implement a semi-circular seating arrangement (in the shape of the Tamil letter 'Pa') so that there are no 'backbenchers'.
This will first be tried in govt middle schools and in classes with low student strength.
"All chief educational officers are requested to instruct headmasters to arrange students' desks and chairs in a 'Pa' shape in the classroom, depending upon the strength and size of the classroom," a circular from the school education director said.
Officials said it would be tested on a pilot basis in the 8,000 govt middle schools across the state.
This new arrangement is likely to be difficult to follow in a class where the students' strength is more than 35.

'Sthanarthi Sreekuttan' revolves around backbencher Sreekuttan who challenges a frontbencher in school elections. He proposes the semi-circular seating to bridge student divide. In the end, his idea is adopted by the school, marking a shift in teaching. The 2024 movie, which was released recently on an OTT platform, has inspired many schools in Kerala to change their seating arrangement.

Now, Tamil Nadu has followed suit.
"Every student will have a clear view of the teacher and other students. The teacher can easily make eye contact with all students, improving engagement. It will also promote discussions, question and answer sessions, and peer learning," the circular from the school education director said.
"This allows the teacher to walk into the centre of the classroom, making teaching more dynamic and interactive.
It facilitates easy monitoring and support for all students. Students feel more involved and less isolated. Shy or quiet students are more likely to participate in a circular and inclusive learning," it said.
It also said the new arrangement will be ideal for role plays, science experiments, and interactive lessons. "Classroom design isn't about the furniture. It's about fostering connection. This shape will do that beautifully.
Every student will be in the front row. The best learning happens where no one hides, moreover, it brings everyone into the light of learning."
Federation of Private School Associations, however, has asked govt to consider the new arrangement carefully before implementing it. "The arrangement can accommodate only a few students. It may strain the students to turn their heads to look at the blackboard, and also cause eye-related issues," said M Arumugam, president of the federation.

57 Vidarbha villages among 63 from state vying for model solar village tag

1 2 3 4 Nagpur: As many as 63 villages across Maharashtra will be vying for the model solar village tag. The govt has launched the initiative to establish one model solar village in every district of the country under the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme. Notably, 57 of the 63 villages picked from Maharashtra belong to the Vidarbha region. The village that installs the highest solar energy capacity within six months will be declared the winner and will receive a grant of Rs1 crore from the central govt. The selected villages include 26 from Akola, 15 from Buldhana, nine from Wardha, six each from Parbhani and Bhandara, and one village from Gondia. Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co Ltd ( MSEDCL ) has already launched a solar village scheme aimed at making 100 villages in the state energy independent by adopting solar energy. So far, 14 villages have achieved this status. The central govt's model solar village competition is expected to give a further push to this mission. MSEDCL has been appointed as the nodal agency for implementing the scheme in Maharashtra. Villages with a population of at least 5,000 are eligible to participate. "Currently, villages were shortlisted from six districts, most of them from Vidarbha. Under the scheme, rooftop solar systems will be installed in homes through the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, and public utilities such as streetlights and water supply schemes will be shifted to solar energy," a MSEDCL press release stated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gentle Japanese hair growth method for men and women's scalp Hair's Rich Learn More Undo At the end of the contest period, the total installed solar capacity will be assessed, and one top-performing village from each district will receive a Rs 1 crore grant. IAF expresses concerns, PMC intensifies garbage collection near Pune airport and Air Force Station

1 2 3 Pune: The civic body has intensified its garbage collection efforts around the city airport following concerns raised by the Air Force Station Pune, which is operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF). The issue of garbage collection and disposal became a flashpoint at Pune airport after two incidents involving stray dogs on the runway disrupted civil flight operations earlier this year. Bird strikes also pose operational challenges for IAF, which operates two squadrons of Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter aircraft at the station. The presence of this urban wildlife is encouraged by uncollected waste, it had been pointed out. IAF officials communicated several issues regarding this situation to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and recommended immediate and long-term measures to address the concerns through a formal letter. Although IAF has a trained bird control team, challenges still arise at times. So, maintaining a clean environment is the paramount factor for air operations," the officer told TOI. In response, PMC has developed a comprehensive plan, increasing garbage collection from once to thrice a day around the Air Force Station, said Sandeep Kadam, head of the PMC's solid waste management department. "We have also assigned a team to collect garbage at night and maintain daily records of their activities. A nodal officer was designated to oversee the entire operation. Civic teams are now collecting garbage within a 4km radius of the airport," Kadam told TOI. Civic officials claimed that they have adopted a multi-pronged strategy to tackle this issue. "We have roped in a dedicated team of 15 workers to lift garbage daily in three shifts. They clean and sweep the areas in a 4km radius. Private plot owners here have also been told to clean their areas to avoid a penalty," said a PMC official. Localities like Kalwadi vasti, Lohegaon gaothan, Forest Park, and others host hundreds of houses. "Daily collection of dry and wet garbage is about two tonne. It is a massive exercise as our personnel have to collect it from different locations. We have also urged citizens not to throw trash in open areas and dispose of it at designated places only," said Dhanshree Jagdale, divisional sanitary inspector of Nagar Road ward office. Jagdale claimed that they work in tandem with airport authorities and the Air Force Station. "Coordinated efforts are the need of the hour to address this issue completely. We have also increased vehicles for garbage collection and share details daily with IAF and the airport authority. We are working on the recommendations suggested by IAF," she said. Meanwhile, PMC's veterinary department head Sarika Funde told TOI that they have started a sterilisation and vaccination drive for stray dogs in the area over last ten days. "We have also asked volunteers to feed dogs 200m away from the airport. Earlier, we would send our dog-catching vehicle only on Saturday. Now, we send it on Wednesday as well. As per our observation, there are about 70 stray dogs in and around the airport," she said.
