Queens, WWII veterans, plenty of high school bands bring cheer to tens of thousands at Lilac parade
Draped in purple dresses, University High School senior Raegan Miller and the royal court waved to the crowd as the exquisite float they stood on proceeded through the downtown streets.
"I think it's just really awesome that we're here bringing many communities together and showing back the love that Spokane has always given to us," Miller said as the parade units staged on the Washington Street Bridge minutes before the parade.
Miller was shocked when she was crowned queen earlier this spring, saying every one of the six princesses who joined her on the float Saturday deserved to be queen.
"It was honestly crazy when I found out I won because I was just so appreciative and I knew that all the girls beside me were going to help me get through this and help me be the best leader I can be," she said.
Miller, who will attend Saint Mary's College in California after graduation, said the past few months have been fun with plenty of memories created.
"It's been super busy, but I love being busy," she said. "I love making new connections with new leaders in this community. These girls, we've grown really close together and we became really good friends over these past few months."
Nearby, Valleyfest royalty Aimee Cook, Chloe Nelson and Makenna Babb were also ready to hit the streets on their float. Valleyfest, held in September, is Spokane Valley's community festival.
Cook, who is Miss Spokane Valley, said she enjoyed connecting with the other royalty from the region. Nelson and Babb said they were excited to see the children lining the streets at the parade.
"Seeing the little girls always makes me so happy, and I love seeing them and making a good positive impact on them," said Nelson, who is student body president at Spokane Valley Tech.
Bill Beckstrom, a U.S. Navy World War II veteran, rode in an army green 1944 Jeep with two other World War II veterans.
Beckstrom said he served aboard the USS Curtiss and survived a Japanese pilot who barreled his plane into their ship. Dozens of his fellow comrades died, however, and the ship had to return to San Diego because of the strike.
Beckstrom, a 98-year-old Spokane Valley resident, said his family came to watch him in the parade. Beckstrom also said he looked forward to seeing the youngsters at the parade.
"I get a kick out of the kids," he said.
Tens of thousands of people lined the streets to take in the floats and bands.
Alison Long was one of the attendees. She sat in chairs with her grandson and mother, Maryann Canterbury. They came to see family members, one of whom is Miss Davenport, on the Davenport float.
Canterbury, 73, said she hasn't been to the Lilac parade in decades. She said she loves the lights and the bands that play.
"I always enjoy the sparkle," she said.

Miss Liberty - a hero during the American Revolutionary War, she also served on the time-displaced Five Warriors from Forever team. Whip Whirlwind - better known as Max Mercury, the speedster was a hero during the Wild West, where he used his Flash-like abilities to protect Native Americans. Super Chief - an Iroquois warrior from the 15th century, his powers were granted by the Manitou Stone but only last for an hour at a time. Sandman - Not to be confused with the Neil Gaiman character, Wesley Dodds carries a Gas Gun into action and uses his prophetic dreams to help him figure out the crime scenes he encounters. Amazing Man - Will Everett served as this Golden Age vigilante during World War II, and gained powers after being kidnapped and experimented on by the Ultra-Humanite. He can now mimic and absorb any material. Zatara - Giovanni "John" Zatara is the father of Zatanna. Like his daughter, he casts spells by speaking backwards and was a key member of the Justice Society of America. Liberty Bell - another DC character who has had multiple characters hold the matter, she activated her powers by ringing the Liberty Bell. The Libby Lawrence version is the wife of Johnny Quick and Jesse Quick's mother. Bulletman - this World War II superhero used his Crime Cure serum to battle Nazis, and donned the Gravity Regulator Helmet to deflect bullets. Bulletgirl - Bulletman's wife had the same powers and gadgets as her husband. Max Mercury - This time-displaced speedster will be known best to many of you as the mentor of The Flash (Wally West) and Kid Flash (Bart Allen). TNT - Thomas N. Astronomer hires Gwyneth Paltrow as a spokesperson after Coldplay kiss cam scandal
Astronomer—the company whose CEO resigned after being caught on a kiss cam at a Coldplay rock concert embracing a woman who was not his wife —is trying to move on from the drama with someone who knows the band pretty well. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who was married to Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin for 13 years, announced Friday on X that she has been hired by Astronomer as a spokesperson. Astronomer, a tech company based in New York, found itself in an uncomfortable spotlight when two of its executives were caught on camera in an intimate embrace at a Coldplay concert—a moment that was then flashed on a giant screen in the stadium. CEO Andy Byron and human resource executive Kristin Cabot were caught by surprise when Martin asked the cameras to scan the crowd during a concert earlier this month. Unfortunately, You Watched ‘Fantastic Four' The Wrong Way This Weekend
Fantastic Four Fantastic Four has great critic and audience reviews, and had a solid opening weekend of $218 million, already passing up its reported budget. While you may have enjoyed watching the movie this weekend, there is a 97% chance you…did it wrong. Mild spoilers follow. It was not widely broadcast, but this is a film that you should have watched in IMAX, similar to how a movie like Sinners was recently bolstered by that kind of release. The movie was in fact shot in IMAX, but past that, Fantastic Four: First Steps had a filming decision by Matt Shakman that was rather cool. Any time you saw Galactus, the film switched to the 'square' 1.43:1 format, as opposed to 1.90:1 which is the IMAX format the rest of the movie is shot in. To his credit, Shakman did say this was happening before release, but if you did not see that out of the hundreds of interviews he and the cast gave, I wouldn't blame you. He had an interview to IMAX about the process and while he said he didn't want to 'ruin' when that happened, it came out before the movie aired anyway. Again, most fans did not realize this until after the fact, and social media has now been filled with images of what viewers were 'missing' if they did not see the movie or its Galactus parts in IMAX: These tweets have racked up hundreds of thousands of likes and millions of views in some instances, so perhaps word of mouth may spread that this is the 'best' way to view the movie. Even doing this for a living, I didn't realize that this was the case. Not that the film looked bad by any means in a normal theater, visually (it's one of the best Marvel has done in a while), but this still would have been cool to see. I really, really loved Sinners switching to 1.90:1 during its biggest scenes, and this would have been a neat way to bolster the sheer size of Galactus. Speaking of the sheer size of Galactus, what exactly happens to his giant world-eating ship that's just hanging out in orbit without him or even Silver Surfer around to pilot it? I'm guess Reed can figure out some way to repurpose it. That, or a more nefarious force whom we may be seeing rather soon… In any case, if you haven't seen Fantastic Four yet, you should probably find your local IMAX theater to do so.
