Titled 'Abstract Horizons,' it highlights the pioneering contributions of artists like Mohammed Al-Saleem and Abdulhalim Radwi, whose work helped lay the groundwork for the Kingdom's contemporary art movement.
Borrowing its name from Al-Saleem's seminal work, the collection takes a unique approach, emphasizing the shifting aesthetic and intellectual currents of the Kingdom through the abstract practices of three generations of Saudi artists.
The exhibition seamlessly flows from the early beginnings with artists born in the 1930s and 1940s, whose work predominantly emerged in the 1990s: Radwi was a foundational figure in Saudi modernism; Al-Saleem, who became notable for establishing the 'horizonism' movement, characterized his work with a geometric depiction of the Saudi skyline and desertscape; Taha Al-Seban furthered the desert motif with his unique color compositions.
From there, it can be seen how abstraction has transformed into a crucial language in the cultural scene.
The exhibition continues to work from the early 2000s, engaging more with culture, identity and memory. There are artists like Abdulrahman Al-Soliman, also a critic, who infused architectural elements to bridge between heritage and contemporary expression; Abdullah Hamas, who reimagines the Saudi landscape through geometric compositions; Fahad Al-Hajailan, whose abstraction plays with color and movement; Raeda Ashour, one of the first female Saudi abstract artists, who adopts a minimalist yet evocative approach with a chromatic palette and fluid silhouettes.
Then, at the turn of the 21st century, there is the work of artists born in the 1970s. Abstraction is now a conceptual tool.
Rashed Al-Shashai, known for his experimental approach, repurposes everyday materials to construct layered compositions that address the tension between tradition and modernity while, in contrast, Zaman Jassim's abstraction interplays between the tangible and the elusive.
SRMG's collection is on display as part of an exhibition titled 'Collections in Dialogue,' featuring collected works by the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) and Hayy Jameel.

‘Art of the Kingdom' exhibition to open in Beijing's National Museum on July 30

Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The Museums Commission announced that the traveling exhibition 'Art of the Kingdom: Poetic Visions' will open at the National Museum of China in Beijing on July 30, marking a cultural milestone in celebration of Saudi Arabia and China's diplomatic ties under the "Saudi-Chinese Cultural Year 2025" initiative. This exhibition is the first of its scale to showcase contemporary Saudi artists abroad and features more than 30 artists of diverse backgrounds and styles. It offers a platform to explore bold themes such as identity, memory, tradition, and transformation — through painting, installation, video art, and multimedia works — presenting a powerful portrait of Saudi Arabia's evolving creative landscape. The show follows previous stops in Rio de Janeiro (November 2024) at the historic Imperial Palace and Riyadh (early 2025) at the Saudi Museum of Contemporary Art in JAX. Its arrival in Beijing marks the third leg of its international tour. Among the featured artists are renowned names such as Manal AlDowayan, Muhannad Shono, Lina Qazzaz, Ahmed Mater, Ayman Yossri Daydban, Dana Awartani, and Shadia Alem, offering visitors an in-depth journey through Saudi Arabia's visual culture and artistic narratives. The Beijing edition also includes a new section honoring Saudi modern art pioneers from the 1960s to 1980s, alongside curated selections from the Saudi Ministry of Culture's collection. Focusing on the desert and cultural heritage as its twin themes, the exhibition invites audiences to engage with the region's evolving visual identity while sparking dialogue on contemporary Saudi life. The exhibition exemplifies how cultural diplomacy can strengthen mutual understanding between nations. It also reflects Saudi Arabia's ongoing cultural transformation and international outreach as Saudi artists increasingly gain visibility on the global stage.

Esports World Cup 2025: Prince Faisal Reveals Tournament's Grand Vision

The global spotlight turns to Riyadh as the city hosts the second edition of the Esports World Cup (EWC). This massive event, running from early July to 24 August, signals Saudi Arabia's serious ambition to become a central hub for the booming esports industry. Furthermore, with a record-breaking prize pool, the tournament attracts the world's best talent for an eight-week celebration of gaming and competition. The Esports World Cup is the successor to the successful Gamers' festival, as the Kingdom has significantly increased its investment, boosting the total prize pool to over $70 million for the 2025 event, a notable increase from the $62.5 million offered in the inaugural 2024 competition. This substantial financial commitment underscores the nation's dedication to fostering sustainable careers for players and clubs, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to diversify the economy and create new job opportunities. A Unique Vision for Esports Prince Faisal bin Bandar, chairman of the Saudi Esports Federation, shared his passion for the unique nature of esports. 'Your first introduction to the person you're playing against is not their look, background, history, race, gender, but it's their skill in the game,' he stated in a recent interview. He emphasized that esports allows respect to be built on merit and skill alone. Consequently, this creates a level playing field unlike any other sport. The chairman also highlighted the unparalleled connection between players and fans. He described how streamers can give personal shout-outs, creating an intimate bond that is impossible in traditional sports stadiums. 'That connection to the fans…and that ability to really stake your claim are two things that I just love about gaming and Esports,' he added. More Than Just a Tournament The event is more than a series of competitions; it is a cultural festival. It infuses a distinct Saudi style into the global esports scene. 'It's a red carpet, but it's a very Saudi style,' Prince Faisal explained. 'It's part of what we get to bring to the table is a little bit of the fun, a little bit of our style.' This approach aims to make the event more entertaining and engaging than typical tournaments. A prime example of this unique flavor is the 'crushing of the keys' ceremony. In this ritual, the losing team in a key match must hand over their symbolic key to the victors to be crushed. 'That moment when the team hands over their key to the other team to be crushed is the most diabolical moment, and I love every minute of it,' said Prince Faisal. He believes this adds a layer of fun, intrigue, and brutal competition that defines the spirit of esports. Fierce Competition for the Crown The tournament features a diverse lineup of over 20 of the world's most popular games, including Dota 2, League of Legends, Counter-Strike 2, and Fortnite. The main attraction is the Club Championship, which awards a significant portion of the prize money to the top 16 organizations based on their overall performance across all titles. This innovative format encourages clubs to build strong rosters in multiple games. Looking ahead to the finals, Prince Faisal anticipates a tight race. He noted the growth of many teams since last year's event. While homegrown champions Team Falcons are a strong contender, he also pointed to the strength of international powerhouses like Team Liquid, AG Global, and T1. 'I'm not sure I could tell you who's going to win,' he admitted, 'but I can guarantee it's going to be a lot closer than it was last year.' Short link : Post Views: 24

'Retro Park' Revives 80s and 90s Gaming Nostalgia at the Esports World Cup 2025

The video game industry has undergone rapid evolution over the past decades, with various devices and platforms shaping the features of successive generations, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Thursday. In this context, the Retro Park pavilion drew large crowds at the Esports World Cup 2025, currently taking place at Boulevard Riyadh City. It offers an interactive journey through the world of classic video games, inspired by the 1980s and 1990s, continuing through the 2000s to the present day, starting with the 1972 "Odyssey," the world's first home gaming console, and culminating in today's virtual reality technologies. In the 1970s, specifically in 1977, the Atari video game console gained prominence with its iconic game Pac-Man. In 1983, the Arab world saw the launch of its first Arabic-localized home gaming console, known as Sakhr, alongside the release of the Family game console, fondly remembered by a generation for the classic game Mario. In the early 1990s, the Super Nintendo console emerged, accompanied by the release of Super Mario World in 1993. Arcade machines also became popular in gaming halls before many of their titles transitioned to home consoles. A significant turning point occurred in 1996 with the launch of the PlayStation by Sony, which gained widespread popularity due to its hit game, Crash. The decade concluded with the release of the Sega Dreamcast video game console. In the 2000s, home gaming advanced significantly with the release of the PlayStation 2 and 3, alongside popular games such as Ratchet & Clank and Black Ops. Moreover, Nintendo launched the highly successful Wii, while handheld consoles from Nintendo and PlayStation also gained traction. The emergence of YouTube in 2005 paved the way for "Let's Play" content and gaming-related media. In the second decade of the millennium, video games continued to evolve with the rise of motion-based games such as Just Dance, while meme culture and reaction content spread among gamers and internet users, becoming part of their digital memory. In 2020, virtual reality (VR) technology gained significant prominence through the use of VR headsets, elevating the gaming experience to unprecedented levels and becoming a key part of the industry's global future. The Saudi scene is an active part of this evolution, with the Kingdom witnessing significant growth in the number of players and content creators, in line with the Saudi Vision 2030, which places strong emphasis on the gaming sector as part of digital transformation and youth empowerment.
