Children's TV presenter Glen Michael has died aged 99.
His family said he passed away peacefully at his home in South Ayrshire after a short illness.
He hosted Glen Michael's Cartoon Cavalcade for nearly three decades on STV, beginning in 1966 and running until December 1992.
STV described him as a "legend" and said he would be remembered as a "wonderful performer and personality."
Before the programme launched in 1966, Michael believed he had messed up his audition after smiling constantly due to nerves.
But his approach was liked by programme bosses, who offered him a five-week contract at £14 a week.
Over the decades the show became a hit as Michael introduced cartoons, read birthday greetings and chatted to on-screen companions - including Paladin the lamp and his dogs Rudi and Rusti.
In 1975 Cavalcade won the Scottish ITV programme of the year award from the Radio Industries Club of Scotland.
Bobby Hain, STV's managing director for audiences, said: "We are deeply saddened to hear that Glen Michael has passed away.
"Glen was a wonderful performer and personality and we know that many viewers will have very fond memories of him.
"He was an STV legend, with Glen Michael's Cavalcade a particular favourite for children across Scotland during its 26 year run.
"Our thoughts are with his family at this time and we send them our deepest condolences."
Michael was also one of the original DJs when Radio Clyde launched in the 1970s.
He was born in Devon and named Cecil Edward Buckland, later changing his name to Glen Michael when he decided to try for a career in showbusiness.
As a teenager he went to London to try his luck as an entertainer, and later served in the RAF during World War II.
During this time he met his wife Beryl, who he married in 1947 and who he also worked with in an onstage double act - Michael and Raye.
His life changed when he moved to the Scotland in the early 1950s for a six week run with Scottish comedian Jack Milroy.
The six week run stretched into 13 years of touring and performing in theatres across the country, along with TV appearances alongside Milroy and Rikki Fulton's famed double act Francie and Josie.
When Milroy moved to London, Michael, who had settled in Prestwick, was asked to audition for Cartoon Cavalcade.
He continued to be busy until his death, recently recording a video as an ambassador for service veterans charity Erskine.
He also supported Age UK with their charitable work.
His wife died several years ago but he is survived by his children Yonnie and Christopher and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His family said they were thankful to all the medical professionals and at home carers who helped look after him.

Jake Larson, World War II veteran turned TikTok star, dead at 102

Jake Larson, the World War II veteran and social media star known as 'Papa Jake,' has died, his granddaughter posted on his social media accounts Saturday. He was 102. 'Our beloved Papa Jake has passed away on July 17th at 102 years young. Please know, he went peacefully and was even cracking jokes til the very end,' granddaughter McKaela Larson said in the posts. A member of the nation's 'Greatest Generation,' Larson gained a loyal following on social media as a centenarian, posting as @storytimewithpapajake on TikTok, where he racked up more than 1 million followers with his stories about his life and military service. CNN's Christiane Amanpour interviewed Larson in Normandy, France, in June 2024 on the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Sitting in a wheelchair just steps away from the shoreline, he said he remembered the invasion 'like it was yesterday.' 'I got off the landing craft and had water right up to my chin,' he told CNN. 'We were all kids.' Larson told Amanpour he was just 15 years old when he enlisted in the National Guard — lying about his age at the time. 'I don't think I was a hero. I was just like anybody else. We were all in this together,' he said, adding he was there to tell the stories of his many friends who died during the invasion that turned the tide of the war. Asked by Amanpour whether he and other soldiers knew what they were fighting for at the time, Larson said, 'Oh, definitely. That we knew. Every one of us was prepared to give our life to kick Hitler's ass out of Europe. … And we did.' Just over three weeks ago, Amanpour won an Emmy for her interview with Larson, an honor she shared with him. He reacted to the award in a video sent to Amanpour: 'It's phenomenal. And here I am, little country boy that joins the infantry at 15 years old and I come here now, 102, going on 103 and I'm winning something like this? There is a God.' 'My dad had an epic, epic life,' his son, Karlan Larson said in a brief phone interview with CNN. His father's Emmy is 'proudly displayed' in his living room, which Karlan Larson told CNN would be 'handed down to family members — the grandkids will have to figure out a schedule.' Jake Larson was 'overjoyed' that Amanpour shared her statue with him, his son said.

Jake Larson, WWII veteran turned TikTok's 'Papa Jake,' dies at 102, granddaughter announces

Jake Larson, a World War II veteran who amassed more than 1.2 million followers on TikTok, has died at the age of 102, his granddaughter announced on social media. Known affectionately online as "Papa Jake," Larson helped plan the D-Day invasion and stormed Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. He became an unlikely social media star when his granddaughter started a TikTok account for him, which was followed by his autobiography. "Our beloved Papa Jake has passed away on July 17th at 102 years young. Please know, he went peacefully and was even cracking jokes til the very end," his granddaughter, McKaela Larson, wrote on Instagram. "At this time, the family and I ask for some privacy as we process this loss." "I am so thankful to have shared my Papa Jake with you all. You meant the world to him. When the time is right, I will continue to share Papa Jake's stories and keep his memory alive," she added. "We appreciate all the kind words and posts. As Papa would say, love you all the mostest." Born on Dec. 20, 1922, in Owatonna, Minnesota, Larson grew up on a farm without electricity or running water during the Great Depression. He enlisted in the National Guard in 1938 at age 15, lying about his age, according to the Best Defense Foundation. His unit was transferred to federal service in 1941 following Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. In January 1942, he was sent overseas and was stationed in Northern Ireland. He became operations sergeant and assembled the planning books for Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy. Larson was among the Allied troops who stormed the Normandy shore on D-Day, June 6, 1944, surviving machine-gun fire when he landed on Omaha Beach. He made it unhurt to the bluffs that overlook the beach, then studded with German gun emplacements that mowed down American soldiers. After D-Day, he fought on through the Battle of the Bulge. He and his sweetheart, Lola, later settled in California, where they raised a family after the war. In 2020, his granddaughter started a TikTok account, "storytimewithpapajake," through which he has amassed online fame. He authored an autobiography in 2021 titled "The Luckiest Man in the World: Stories from the life of Papa Jake." Larson returned to Normandy for several D-Day anniversary and memorial celebrations in recent years. "We are the lucky ones," Larson told The Associated Press at the 81st anniversary of D-Day in June, speaking amid the immaculate rows of graves at the American cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach. "They had no family. We are their family. We have the responsibility to honor these guys who gave us a chance to be alive." Larson earlier this month shared a message with Fox News Digital on Independence Day about the importance of freedom. "God bless all those guys that served, and they served the ultimate," Larson told Fox News Digital from his home in Lafayette, Calif., on the Fourth of July. "Their souls are looking down at me now." "Every time I talk, I like to remind people those guys upstairs looking down at us, they're the heroes… None of us every thought we'd be heroes." Tributes from the Zac Brown Brand, Unsubscribe Podcast and podcaster and retired Navy officer, Jacko Willink, have been shared to Larson's Instagram account's stories.
