Leicestershire displayed the quality and character of promotion contenders to stage an impressive fightback on the opening day of their match against rivals Derbyshire. The Division Two leaders recovered from 0-2 to close on 357-3 with England all-rounder Rehan Ahmed and Lewis Hill scoring centuries.Ahmed's 115 was his third consecutive hundred in the championship and his fourth of the season while Hill and skipper Peter Handscomb celebrated personal milestones.Hill marked his 100th first-class appearance with an unbeaten 132 and shared an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 188 with Handscomb who was 99 not out at the close in his 200th red ball game.Hill also added 169 with Ahmed which turned the tide after Luis Reece and Blair Tickner made an encouraging start for the hosts. The pitch had been used for three T20 matches which would have influenced Leicestershire's decision to bat but that looked questionable when both openers were dismissed in the space of six balls.Cloud cover hinted at assistance for the seam bowlers and Reece found enough away movement with the third ball of the day to have Rishi Patel caught behind. When Tickner straightened his second ball to bowl Sol Budinger, the morning was threatening to go badly wrong for the leaders but Ahmed and Hill counter-attacked to dominate the rest of the session.Ahmed scored his maiden century at Derby three seasons ago and he quickly imposed himself on the bowlers to relieve the pressure. When Derbyshire turned to spin in the 15th over, he came down the pitch to dispatch Jack Morley for six before reaching his 50 from 54 balls in the next over.Hill's role was less eye-catching but just as valuable and by lunch the pair had transformed Leicestershire's fortunes at 118-2.Ahmed quickly closed in on his hundred, reverse sweeping Alex Thomson for his 13th four to move to 99 and then squeezing a single past gully to reach three figures from 118 balls.Hill completed his 50 before Ahmed whipped Zak Chappell in the air to deep mid-wicket where Caleb Jewell took a fine catch on the run.The rest of the afternoon belonged to Hill and Handscomb who accumulated steadily against bowling that lacked the consistency to put them under pressure. The pattern was repeated after tea with Handscomb reaching 50 off 84 balls three overs before Hill raised his bat to celebrate the ninth first-class hundred of his career which had come from 194 balls. Not surprisingly, Derbyshire claimed the second new ball as soon as it became available but although Reece beat the bat several times, he could not make the breakthrough as Hill and Handscomb put their side in a commanding position.Report supplied by ECB Reporters' Network, supported by Rothesay

India's head coach clashes with Oval staff before fifth Test as tempers flare

The spicy spats that have increasingly been a feature in the England‑India Tests this summer spilled over to training on Tuesday when the tourists' head coach, Gautam Gambhir, had a row with Lee Fortis, Surrey's head groundkeeper, as his team prepared for the final Test of the series starting on Thursday at the Oval. England were enjoying a break but, with the series still to be decided and India 2-1 down after their fightback at Old Trafford, the visitors' work in the nets was far from straightforward as tensions surfaced in angry exchanges. Reports suggest that Fortis was unhappy with India using parts of the main square and was told 'you can't tell us what to do'. Sitanshu Kotak, the India batting coach, apparently accused the head groundkeeper of being 'a bit arrogant' and shouting at members of India's staff. Gambhir, who played 58 Tests for India, was seen on camera wagging his finger at Fortis saying: 'You can't tell us what to do … you're just the groundsman, nothing beyond.' After walking away in conversation with Kotak, who appeared to take on the role of mediator, Fortis told Gambhir that he may be forced to lodge a complaint against him, drawing a response of: 'You can go and report to whoever you want.' Afterwards, Fortis said: 'It is quite a big game coming up. It is not my job to be happy with [Gautam Gambhir] or not. I have never met him before today. You saw what he was like this morning. It's OK, I am fine. We have nothing to hide.' Kotak said Fortis's objections to a cool box being wheeled on to the square kicked off the arguments. 'He was sitting on the roller, he shouted and told the support staff not to take it there,' he said. 'It is good to be a little possessive and it is also good to be protective, but not that much. Gautam just said do not talk to the support staff like this. 'Most of the team knows that the curator is not the easiest person to get on with. So, that gives a lot of answers. When you're working with very intelligent and highly skilled people, if you sound a bit arrogant or if you come across like … you can be protective. At the end of the day it is a cricket pitch. It is not an antique where you can't touch.' Whether India's frustrations included concerns over the Test pitch as well as their training provisions is not known, but the Oval deck is expected to carry some live grass at the start of the game and provide greater pace and bounce than in the previous three matches. India's rearguard action ended in rancour, with Ben Stokes annoyed that Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja declined his offer of an early handshake as they pursued centuries. Both batters reached three figures, but did so with some persistent sledging from England fielders. Relations between the teams had been relatively serene until a time‑wasting row at the third Test at Lord's, where Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were treated to some choice words from the India captain, Shubman Gill. England responded by accusing Gill of running down the clock during his own innings and Mohammed Siraj was fined for his send-off of Duckett the next morning, though a brief shoulder-to-shoulder contact between the two players was accepted as accidental.

Premier League supercomputer predicts 2025-26 table and it's bad news for Liverpool

Liverpool will begin their defence of the Premier League title next month but a supercomputer has predicted that the trophy won't be staying at Anfield for long Liverpool will once again fail to lift back-to-back Premier League titles, according to a supercomputer which has predicted the full 2025-26 table. The Reds were crowned champions last season after a stunning start to life under new manager Arne Slot. ‌ Very few had backed Liverpool to win the title following the departure of Jurgen Klopp but a slump from Manchester City and Arsenal 's failure to capitalise allowed Slot's side cruise to victory without a formidable challenge. That's set to change this term, though, with City having made 10 signings since the turn of year and Arsenal finally addressing their issues up front. ‌ Liverpool have, of course, spent more than anyone and won't stop at £269million. The reigning champions want to sign Newcastle striker Alexander Isak for a British-record transfer fee of at least £125m. ‌ That's after breaking the record to sign Florian Wirtz for an eye-watering £116m last month. But the supercomputer has Liverpool finishing THIRD - just as the Reds did in the 2020-21 season when they were defending champions under Klopp. Arsenal would finish second for the fourth year running, a new record, with City reclaiming the title under Pep Guardiola. There's also good news for Manchester United, who'd shoot up 10 places but narrowly miss out on Champions League football to Chelsea. Aston Villa would pip Tottenham to sixth place while Newcastle, West Ham and Everton round out the top half. Unfortunately for the three teams promoted from the Championship - Burnley, Sunderland and Leeds - they'd all go straight back down, a worrying trend which we've seen in the past two seasons. These are all predictions made by an AI supercomputer, via Sportscasting, which has simulated the upcoming Premier League season. Explaining City's title win, it said: "Even without any seismic squad changes, their machine-like system - powered by Omar Marmoush, Phil Foden, the returning Rodri, and a 36-goal season from Erling Haaland - keeps them dominant. Who'll win the 2025-26 Premier League title? Give us your prediction in the comments section. ‌ "Their depth and consistency in tight matches give them the edge over Arsenal and Liverpool. Arne Slot's rebuilt side will feature a potent attack - with Mo Salah alongside new signings Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. But their defence will let them down against top teams, causing them to slip to third in the title race." AI supercomputer's 2025-26 Premier League table Manchester City (92 points) Arsenal (88) Liverpool (85) Chelsea (79) Manchester United (76) Aston Villa (70) Tottenham (67) Newcastle (63) West Ham (60) Everton (56) Brighton (54) Wolves (52) Brentford (50) Fulham (48) Crystal Palace (45) Bournemouth (43) Nottingham Forest (40) Burnley (35) Sunderland (32) Leeds (28)
