Malaysian contingent departs for 2025 World University Games in Germany
A total of 41 individuals, consisting of 15 from badminton, followed by swimming (eight), taekwondo (11) and seven officials, including members of the medical team and media, boarded a flight to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before continuing their journey to Dusseldorf, Germany.
The opening ceremony of the 2025 WUG is scheduled at the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena this Wednesday (July 16).
Malaysia, which is targeting seven medals regardless of colour in this edition, will participate in six of the 19 sports, involving the participation of 64 athletes, consisting of 39 men and 25 women.
The six sports that the national contingent will participate in are artistic gymnastics, badminton, archery, athletics, swimming and taekwondo
Among the country's main hopes in this edition include national sprint champion Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi and national 400-metre record holder Umar Osman.
Another is the national trio of female archers who will also compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics. They are Syagiera Mashayikh, Ariana Nur Dania Mohamad Zairi and Nurul Azreena Mohamad Fazil.
In the 2023 edition in Chengdu, China, the national contingent recorded the best achievement in the history of its participation in the WUG with a collection of one gold, one silver and five bronze medals.
The 2025 WUG, which involves the participation of about 150 countries and 8,500 athletes, is scheduled to take place from July 16 to 27 - BERNAMA

India's most famous badminton couple breaks up
KUALA LUMPUR: The marriage of India's most famous badminton couple, P. Kashyap and Saina Nehwal, has ended after seven years. Saina, the 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist, announced this on Instagram today. Saina and Kashyap tied the knot on Dec 14, 2018. "Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways," Saina posted. "We're choosing peace, growth, and healing, for ourselves and each other. Saina became India's first and only world junior champion in 2008. The former world No. 1 was the first player from her nation to finish on the badminton podium at the Olympics when she captured the bronze in 2012 London. Pei Jing accepts invite to spar with French shuttlers
PETALING JAYA: Independent mixed doubles shuttler Lai Pei Jing has accepted an invitation to spar with the French team ahead of the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris. The experienced Pei Jing was approached by French coaches when she was competing with Jimmy Wong in the Luxembourg Open in May. "During a tournament in Luxembourg, French coaches approached me and asked if I was interested in sparring with their players. "I spoke to my coach (Teo Kok Siang) about it because the players here (in Malaysia) also need me. "But he understood that I needed the money, so he gave me his blessing. "This is my first time serving as a sparring partner for another country – but my heart remains with the Malaysian players," said Pei Jing. The French team, which includes world No. 8 Alex Lanier (men's singles) and world No. 7 Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue (mixed doubles) will definitely be eyeing a good showing in the world meet at home. Pei Jing, who will turn 33 in August, made nine appearances in the world meet, three with Tan Aik Quan and six with Tan Kian Meng, and came closest to winning a medal in 2022 when she and Kian Meng reached the quarter-finals. Pei Jing ended her partnership with Kian Meng in March after the latter decided to retire from the sport.
